-wk 23 reported for work.

-sf mb again participated in the work on site before breakfast.  gm remained at home after breakfast to process objects and receive medical treatment.  jw lone member of team in field after breakfast.

-eq distribution of wheelbarrows again a problem.  Loaned one to A17 and again discussed the problem with gb.  More will be ordered.  Also considered installation of a dirt train, but rejected idea because of spatial conflicts with projected new loci.  Decided best approach is to move dirt pile closer to unit to reduce transit time.

-sg meeting with gb, fab, jo, gm, mb, and jw to evaluate strategic decisions of O704 in light of progress yesterday and this morning, as well as a series of elevations of key places taken by jw at the close of yesterday.  Decided to continue searching for possible stones in k15 that may be in the same N-S alignment with those in k25 to the S, f228, and those in k5 to the N, f165.  At jo's suggestion, we will excavate k4 as a E-W half section to get a vertical sense of the stratigraphy, and may choose a similar approach to others, including k14.  gb cautioned us to be especially alert for reddish accumulation, which is a common sign of nearness to the Phase 2 walls, which were built with bricks of reddish clay, unlike later Phase walls which used gray soil for bricks.

dy in the first part of the morning, cleaned and defined a possible doorway, a18, consisting of several courses of single bricks to the W and a possible pise wall to the E.  After photography by jw, v132, proceeded to dig a 150cm wide trench oriented E-W in the S part of the locus.

dy cleared away the laminations, f167, from the part of the locus not occupied by the large stones, f165.  Came down upon a floor with a very hard surface, f224, along the E baulk, which has an E-W line of stones as an inclusion.
sg clean carefully to the W of f224, which include a subfloor subjected to erosion down the slope after use of 224 ceased.

dy continued to excavate accumulation f220 with large picks.  On the last pick run of the day, found a series of stone blocks and smaller stones, f227, which are aligned with the large cut stones, f165, to the north in k5, and the stones, f228, in k25.

dy entire surface leveled against the slope of the hill.  Assigned new feature to the accumulation below, f204.  In the last pick run of the day, uncovered a large sheet of plastic, probably used to isolate a spoils pile from past excavations.

ds brownish-gray accumulation under f207 in the entire locus of k15.  Uniformity and horizontal surface as seen in section should act as a seal to any material below.  Lack of red implies no contact with palace walls.

ds new feature assigned to the leveled accumulation in the entire locus of k23.  Discovery of plastic sheeting after excavating all day in this feature confirms that it is the remnants of a spoils pile from a previous season's excavation.  The stratigraphic value of any artifacts from this feature must be heavily discounted.
