.bk A16 .fl M903LR.J .fd -MX12-99.J***M903LR.J .rd M903 .ri lR -SG Last season we decided to terminate excavations in A16 premature of our main goal; to uncover the entire stone pavement of the courtyard and understand phase 4 and phase 3 role in A16. The area was too large and instead of trying to finish excavating k110 in MZ14 we decided that it would be best to stop digging and continue in season MZ15. The strategy for this season utilizes the same project goal as last season: to uncover the stone pavement of the courtyard located in area A16. Excavations are planned for 3 weeks until September 19 followed by a 3 week study period. This should be ample time to excavate k110 which measures 8.4 x 6.4 meters with a depth of 1 meter until the stone pavement. The area forms a square excavated on all four sides which shows the stone pavement on 3 of the 4 sides with the western portion missing in the area of A10 (however there are a few stones in the southern end). The east baulk of k110 was left from last season because we did not fully understand the stratigraphy to remove it. Inside the baulk there appears to be two walls a few courses deep but are in poor shape and difficult to identify. This season we plan to remove this baulk by making it two separate loci and level it out with the rest of k110. f 180 C01 After reviewing the material from last season it has come to our attention that the tannur has not been relayed nor photographed. Today we cleaned the area around the tannur and scraped the walls around it for the photograph. While doing this a jar 20 cm below emerged along with a burial. A photograph was taken of this and tomorrow BP will survey it in using the GTS since it is too high to measure with our relay rod. The material inside the tannur was also excavated and did not warrant a new feature since it appears that the tannur collapsed on itself and thus no inner material remained. f 251 B11 an "L" shaped clay formation 10cm thick that has half a cv emerging next to it. This feature was first seen at the end of excavations last season. f 255 B11 a mixture of soft soil with hard chunks of orange colored clay. It is mostly if not all contaminated since it was left exposed for three years. i 62 B11 small miniature bowl painted with triangular designs (each triangle has a different design) found inside a jar burial a15. Diameter of mouth opening is 4.2 J01 4 J04 2.4 i 63 B11 small Khabur jar found in the ceramic jar burial. It appears to be a miniature jar with painted lines in a brownish orange color. There are four lines and fingerprint impressions visible. The fill of this item has been taken out and assigned i85. Diameter of neck 2.6, diameter of base is 2.6 cm J01 7.85 J04 6.9 k 201 C01 Today we started to scrape the area and removed approx 3-5 cm of dirt using a small pick. This small square belonged to A10 and was left unexcavated since it was not understood at the time. This area is in poor condition since it has been left unexcavated and exposed to the elements for a number of years. .bk A16 .fl M903LR.J .fd N304LR2.J***M903LR.J .rd M903 -DY Today we opened up A16 for season MZ15 and began by removing backfill and scraping the entire area to eliminate the outer coating of soil caused by the winter rains. We met with gB early this morning to discuss the strategy for excavations in A16. We decided to string up new loci for k110 and have included a small square part to the west of k110 that was A10. This small square is now k201 and k110 will include k202, k203, k204, k205, k206, and k207. The East section of k110 will also become new loci k208,k209 and the area that protrudes out of the section k108 next to the tannur f180 will be k210. -SG Last season we decided to terminate excavations in A16 premature of our main goal; to uncover the entire stone pavement of the courtyard and understand phase 4 and phase 3 role in A16. The area forms a square excavated on all four sides which shows the stone pavement on 3 of the 4 sides with the western portion missing in the area of A10 (however there are a few stones in the southern end). The east baulk of k110 was left from last season because we did not fully understand the stratigraphy to remove it. Inside the baulk there appears to be two walls f215 and f214 a few courses deep but are in poor shape and difficult to identify. This season we plan to remove this baulk by making it two separate loci and level it out with the rest of k110. f 250 B11 This is a circular shape in k110 that was noticed during the last day of excavations in MZ14. The shape does not appear to form a true circle and appears more "horseshoe" in shape. It has a thick mud ring, which fluctuates in width around 16cm thick all around. The material inside does not appear different than the material on the outside. We may be at the top of this "pit"/feature and hope to see it better when scraped and cleaned. k 209 C01 today we began to remove the east baulk of k110 starting from the southern side, which is k209. The material was assigned with old feature numbers of last season. We are removing this material, which is approx. 90 cm high using a big pick.
