These photographs are important for they show the beginning of the red in the area which is phase 4. We spent the morning cleaning the area and used a water bottle to spray down the red areas. A test of this procedure was done the day before and found that the red shows better when when. The overhead camera was used along with the slide camera. A total of 60 photographs were taken of the area. .rd M919 ;k 202 ;C01 Yesterday a layer of red was removed measuring 10cm in thickness throughout the entire loci. A potsmash was uncovered immediately north of the burial f206 a16 from last season. This potsmash contains no rim nor base and consists of large thick fragments of pottery lying all with the outside face lying down exposing the inside of the sherds. To the east of the potsmash a localized burning area was noticed by fAB. The area shows bright red bricks, gray ash, black ash, and light gray bricky material mixed together. The colors are quite vivid and sharp when scraped with the trowel but lose their brightness when brushed. This burnt area appears localized only within k202 crossing into k203 and we plan to leave this feature in the case that this is a destruction layer and covers the entire area above the stones. The stone pavement found in k109 show several stones with black stains on them (the stones to the far west) and looks like bitumen. It is interesting to note that the burnt area lies next to these stones and may be the reason why they are darkened. We will see if this burnt layer continues to the stone pavement. .rd M918 ;k 204 ;C01 The reddish layer was removed today which exposed more of the stone courtyard. .bk A16 .fl M919LR.J .fd -MX12-A.J***M919LR.J .rd M919 .ri lR i 140 C01 yesterday we uncovered this item which we have called a potsmash. While removing this layer, several large pottery pieces were uncovered immediately north of a16 burial from last season. These ceramic pieces presumably come from one vessel, likely a pot smash i140 which contains no rim nor base and consists of large thick fragments of pottery lying with the outside face lying down exposing the inside of the vessel. To the east of the pot smash i140 a burning area f317 was noticed by fAB. The area shows bright red bricks, gray ash, black ash, and light gray bricky material mixed together.
