.bk A16 .fl N304LR2.J .fd N304LR2.J .rd M909 .ri lR -DY Today we continued removing k210, which we have termed "the pillar" since it, is a long column of soil left from last season. We have concentrated the majority of our efforts into removing this pillar, which requires an increase in dirt removal slowing excavations in the other loci. Yesterday the khabur structure that was the highest level was removed and today the entire ashy pit fill was excavated leaving the material that the pit a17, a13 cut as the current elevation. We plan to stop at the red below, which is approx 30 cm leaving a 10cm buffer zone between the two layers. a 19 B11 Human burial with two ceramic jars in place. The bottom of the vessel i98 remains intact and was found above the head to the north of the body. The body i96 rests in the fetal position with the left shoulder in the ground head facing north. The right hand crosses over and lies next to the left shoulder. The second vessel i97 is also a jar but much more complete than i98. This vessel is white in color with a sharp neck and a rope design. The rim of the jar is in pieces and appears to mushroom out. .rd L609 .ri jLW f 254 B11 red layer seen in north section, which has already been excavated and contains no q-lots. .rd M903 .ri lR f 256 B11 This locus is technically the east baulk (southern portion) of k110 and contains many layers. This feature was assigned to the baulk to facilitate excavation and contains many features and layers. .rd M909 f 276 C01 Yesterday bricks were found while scraping the surface and were removed which revealed that this is in fact a burial. We assigned this feature with the assumption that this was a pit. It is now the feature for the burial, which goes down 40cm then comes down on the human remains. .rd M911 f 289 B11 fill of f250, which we are calling circular pit. The fill consists of compacted light brown soil with clay inclusions. f 290 B11 Small round hole located 130cm from the top of pit f216 in the lowest level. The hole begins on the northeast side and runs along the same angle then turns. A meter tape was inserted and measured 70cm deep and appears to continue. This hole may be a rodent hole with other possibilities including a piece of wood or an outlet for the collection drain of the stone pavement a12. f 291 B11 Small pit located inside another pit; f250. This pit has soft gray fill with lots of charcoal inclusions. Several stones; one basalt grinding stone and one door socket along with some pottery sherds marked the top of this feature. C01 This small feature was noticed after removing 10cm from the larger pit f250. After cleaning the area a clear separation between the more compacted soil of f289 and the fill of this pit was noticed immediately by its dark gray coloring. Several objects were found on top, which included a door socket, grinding stone, and several larger pieces of pottery. The fill is rather dirty with lots of charcoal inclusions. A photograph was taken and then 30cm of soil was removed from this feature. The pit appears to continue down but due to its small size we will remove f289 around it first then remove the rest of the gray fill when there is more space to excavate it. .rd M909 i 96 B11 The body i96 rests in the fetal position with the left shoulder in the ground head facing north. The right hand crosses over and lies next to the left shoulder. Two jars were found in the grave; i98 and i97. The complete burial constitutes a19. i 97 C01 The second vessel i97 is also a jar but much more complete than i98, both part of a19 burial. This vessel is white in color with a sharp neck and a rope design. The rim of the jar is in pieces and appears to mushroom out. i 98 C01 The bottom of the vessel i98 remains intact and was found above the head to the north of the body. .rd L831 k 111 ;B11 The north half of k110- west of k108. This locus is the splitting of k110 since it became too large for excavation. This locus was only used for several days. k 112 B11 The southern half of k110. This locus was created to facilitate excavations since k110 became too large and was split into two loci. This locus was only used for several days. .rd M909 k 202 C02 tomorrow we plan to scrape the area to see if we see any traces of the wall f249 then we will begin to go down to the red, which is higher in this area seen in the north. k 205 C01 We tried to follow the sloping layers in the south section which revealed two layers; f266 a reddish layer and below f282 a gray ashy layer. f266 was followed and removed but when the workmen tried to follow f282 it seemed to disappear and was too difficult to see. The area was then cleaned and several bricks were noticed on the surface along with the circular lines that were noticed last season, which defined f250. The bricks are inside this circular pattern on the western end. This may be another burial.
