dy Continued to excavate the cement-like accumulation, f63.  The digging is slow because of a reduced crew and the difficulty in forcing the pick down through the accumulation.  We are promised a jackhammer tomorrow, when we anticipate reducing the excavated area to the north half of the locus to speed our investigation of whether or not there are structures south of the wall in what is now and likely was in antiquity an open plaza.  We recovered  relatively little pottery and few artifacts from this accumulation today.

dy Relayed, re-photographed, and removed three large stones, f66, f67, and f68, which were overhanging the typological column k104 and endangering the workmen.  All were founded on brown soil.

pr Roped off the westernmost three stones of the apron to protect workmen excavating below in k104.  The matrix around the stones was excavated leaving them firmly bonded to pillars, which are now showing signs of cracking.

dy While photographing, v27, and removing the stones in the south half of the locus, we better defined the interface between the ashy lens, f64 and the red accumulation, f65, to the north in the NE corner.  The red accumulation appears as a small wedge, surrounded to the south and west by the ash deposit which covers the N half of the locus, v28.  After the k101 stones were removed and safety ropes installed on the f10 stones, we began to excavate in the south half of this locus, extending the southern boundary of the western half to the monumental wall, f11.  At the suggestion of gB, we designated this modified locus k105.

sg At the suggestion of gB, we agreed to speed our investigation of the construction of the wall by forming a new locus consisting of the southern half of k104 with a further southern extension in the western half of the south baulk to meet the monumental wall, f11.  In this way we can continue the typological column in a reduced area nevertheless expected to yield diminished quantities of the same kinds of pottery, while at the same time seeing how the monumental wall was constructed.  The western section of the baulk was selected to minimize the danger posed by overhanging stones from both f10 to the east and f11 to the south.
dy We first removed a small ledge of accumulation, f69, along the south baulk that had built up during the excavation of the animal burial, f61.  We then excavated the SW protrusion, f70 reaching the wall almost immediately after an extension of less than 50cm.  These features and the wall were then photographed, v29.
