It is very difficult to break with the large pick; in fact several workmen wanted us to rent a jackhammer or to add water to the surface to aid in excavation. f 64 ds Lens of ashy material with well defined boundaries found in the NW quarter of k104. In the far NE corner, it is level and sealed with a layer of bakhia. As one proceeds to the east and to the south, the elevation diminishes, but one can trace the horizontal border easily as one moves away to the south. At this point it seems as if the burial was placed in clean fill, f59, laid atop the compacted ash. f 65 ds A layer of reddish soil with bakhia-like inclusions, apparently abutting the compacted ash, f64 and seen only in the NE corner of k104. There is no evidence that accumlations above the burial were cut, then filled with this soil. We presume that it is one of a number of different types of fill, brought from diverse places in and around the tell, to build up the temple mound behind the monumental wall, f11. f 66 ds A square, cut block of limestone in the NW corner of k101 that forms part of the top of the monumental wall, f11, and that overhangs the typological column k104. It sits atop another larger stone, f67, with little or no binding material between. f 67 ds A large block of limestone in the NW corner of k101 that forms part of the top of the monumental wall, f11, and that overhangs the typological column k104. Another large stone, f66, sits on top. The stone appears to be founded on soil, and may be a late addition or repair to f11, or a stone that tumbled down the terrace and landed on the wall. f 68 ds A large block of limestone in the NW corner of k101 that forms part of the top of the monumental wall, f11, and that overhangs the typological column k104. The stone appears to be founded on soil, and may be a late addition or repair to f11, or a stone that tumbled down the terrace and landed on the wall. f 69 ds Accumulation consisting of several bands of bakhia and deteriorated bricks along the southern edge of k104. f 70 ds A thin vertical section, about one meter wide, one meter high and less than 25cm thick of accumulation in the souteastern quadrant of k105. This thin "slice" of material abuts the monumental wall, f11, on its northeastern face and was left as a template to contrast with the bakhia-covered stones on the fully exposed northwestern face. f 71 ds Lens of compacted ashy material with well defined boundaries, below f59 and above f73, and found in the SE quarter of k105. It is part of the construction fill behind monumental wall, f11. f 72 ds A north-south line of seven large limestone blocks along the western boundary of k12 atop compacted fill, f34. The northernmost stone had previously been designated f35 when it was the only stone showing. It is likely part of re-modeling in the Middle Mittani period which included the construction of the western part of the second apron, f10. f 73 ds Lens of compacted ashy material with well defined boundaries, below f71 and above the southern part of f64, and found in the SE quarter of k105. It is part of the construction fill behind monumental wall, f11. f 74 ds Lens of compacted ashy material with well defined boundaries, below the southern part of f64, and found in the SE quarter of k105. It is part of the construction fill behind monumental wall, f11. It marked the stopping point of excavations in this locus for the season. f 75 ds Isolated quadrant of circle of small stones located in the NW corner of k103. As excavation was proceeding very quickly and no evidence of use was dedected, it was removed. f 76 ds Surface in k103 composed of a concrete-like matrix of gravel, sand, and grey ashy soil to a depth exceeding 15 cm. It was difficult to remove, even with the jackhammer and contained copious amounts of pottery compared to the layer above, f63. It marks the end point of excavations in this locus for the season. f 77 ds Very large stone in the far NW corner of k103. It is at the same elevation as the concrete pavement, f76. At the stop point of the excavation, only the top is visible and we cannot yet determine how it is founded. f 78 ds The northernmost of two large limestone blocks underneath the southernmost two of a higher line of seven stones, f72, located along the western edge of k12. These blocks were sitting in packed fill, f38, near to but not in contact with the monumental wall, f11, which forms the outer perimeter of the BA temple mound. This indicates that they were either associated with the construction of the temple mound, or were put there to repair some sort of damage. f 79 ds The southernmost of two large limestone blocks underneath the southernmost two of a higher line of seven stones, f72, located along the western edge of k12. These blocks were sitting in packed fill, f38, near to but not in contact with the monumental wall, f11, which forms the outer perimeter of the BA temple mound. This indicates that they were either associated with the construction of the temple mound, or were put there to repair some sort of damage. f 80 ds Vertical layer of bakhia packed and plastered between stones of the f11 wall, in k104/105, probably for the purpose of sealing the wall and regulating the passage of moisture from the packing behind to the front surface. f 81 ds Accumulation below f63 and above f82 seen only in N and E sections of k103. f 82 ds Accumulation below f81 and above f76 seen only in N and E sections of k103. f 83 ds Layer seen in only in west section of k12, abutting f84 and overlaying f34. It is highly probable that this is a remnant of a layer of bakhia which formed the surface of the monumental mound that extended from boundary wall, f11, at the bottom to the BA temple at the top. f 84 ds Several courses of bricks abutting f63 and overlaying f34, seen only in the west section of k12. These bricks would have formed a flat step or terrace in an otherwise sloping temple mound. f 85 ds The easternmost limestone block originally forming part of a cluster of stones, f39, whose other components, f48 and smaller pieces, were removed earlier. f 86 ds Natural accumulation in k101 below accumulation f13, but seen only in section. f 87 ds Natural accumulation in k101 below accumulation f86, and atop accumulation f30 but seen only in section. f 88 ds A small lens of deteriorated burned brick that abuts the stones of wall, f11, in k101. Seen only in section. f 89 ds Two parallel thin layers of bakhia seen only in the east section of k102 after excavation was completed. The layers rise to the south, which is contrary to the general slope of the temple mound and other layers of bakhia in this locus. f 90 ds Layer of compacted soil between compacted fill, f38, and the highest extant surface of bakhia, f50, in the western section of k12. Not differentiated from f38 during excavation, it has the same stratigraphic position as compacted fill, f42, in the eastern half of the locus, but differs in texture and color, being ashy brown. f 91 ds The central limestone block originally forming part of a cluster of stones, f39, whose other components, f48 and smaller pieces, were removed earlier. f 92 ds A wedge of compacted fill above a sealing layer of bakhia, f58, seen only in section in the SE corner of k104. It was excavated as a part of fill, f57. Its purpose is not known, although it could have been part of a project to increase the level of the temple mound to match a corresponding increase in the height of monumental wall, f11.
