Their relative positions suggest that they were intentionally placed, possibly as a part of a wall or enclosure. Their proximity to the surface also suggests that they were moved to their current position. It is unclear when they were placed and it could range from the late Mittani period through the Middle Assyrian period which immediately followed, to a much later time associated with scattered occupation. .rd Q919 .ri jW 5 13 pt-a f122,f127,f128 A pit that was cut into the baqaya packing, f109, f50, which covered the temple mound from when it was constructed in the Early Dynastic III period until the middle of the Mittani period. As the packed mud glacis which covered the pit fills and cut was applied atop the baqaya late in the Mittani period, we presume that the pit was cut by those who knew the sacred nature of the temple mound. We can discern no apparent purpose for the pit because the fill was relatively clean. 6 23 pt-a f149,f153,f160 A pit that was cut into both the baqaya glacis, f109, and the packed mud (wahal) glacis, f152. The fills were relatively clean, so it was impossible to determine the function. The most likely time that it was use was late in the Mittani period. 7 23 is a4,f3,f4,f110,f112,f130,f132,f169,f195,f201,f216 An L-shaped arrangement of large stones (a4,f110,f169 = f201,f195,f216), tannur, f3. and a floor surface, (f4), all at approximately at the same elevation (9250) and with 200cm of one another. Although it was most likely a living surface, it is impossible to tell the precise function. The elevation suggests that it was used in the late-Mittani period or immediately following, but exactly when is problematical. 8 109 st-is f185,f186,f187,f188,f248,f249 An arc of large limestone blocks to the south of the memory stones along the covered top of revetment wall, f11. No associated living surface could be found, although the arrangement suggests that the stones were intentionally placed. 9 109 st-is f255,f256,f264,f265,f266,f267,f332 A cluster of four large limestone blocks surrounding a circular arrangement of four smaller ones located south of revetment wall, f11. No associated surface was found, but the arrangement suggests that they were intentionally placed. 10 23 pt-a f258,f263,f269 Grave-shaped pit in the NW corner of k23. The spoils from digging this pit are the likely source of the Uruk period seal impressions found adjacent to the north in accumulation, f252, which lay atop a layer of bricks, f262, which in turn covered the baqaya glacis, f109. The chronology suggests that it was dug in the Mittani period after the wahal glacis, f152, was constructed. ;a11 REPLACED with alternate in R718jW.j ;11 23 is a6,f136,f142 A succession of ;special-use features, one atop the other. Starting from ;the top, near the surface was a hard-packed circle of soil ;with a burned spot in the middle, f136. Underneath was a ;circular layer of fist-sized stones in a matrix of mud, ;f142. On the bottom was pit, a6. This arrangement ;suggests that this particular place had some ritual ;significance over an extended period of time. 12 23 is a10,a14,f252,f270,f215 A pit with its fill, a10, the likely detritus from its digging, f252 , and a brick coating, f270 and f215, of the baqaya glacis, f109, upon which were found seal impressions from the Uruk period, a14. 13 109 ia i20.1,i20.2,i20.3,i20.4,i21,i22,i23,i24,i25,q374.1,q379.1 A faience pendant and a collection of beads made from faience and other materials found together in accumulation south of the revetment wall, f11. 14 23 ia i14,i15.1,i15.2,i15.3,i16,i17,i18,i19,q328.3,q328.4,q328.5 A group of Uruk period seal impressions found immediately to the north of pit a10. 15 23 is f152,f215,f262,f192,a6 A group of bricks(red) and a brick structure with associated pit abutting a wahal glacis and overlaying a baqaya glacis, f109. The baqaya glacis, f109, was constructed in the Early Dynastic Period as part of the temple BA mound that includes a revetment wall, f11. Eventually the wall was covered with accumulation and a set of memory stones, a16, was placed atop it. A new wahal glacis, f152, was constructed atop at least the lower part of the baqaya glacis to make a smooth transition to the higher elevation of the memory stones. The wahal abutted a line of bricks that ran east to west along the north baulk of k23 and which included a deteriorated structure that may have incorporated a ceremonial pit.
