The surveyor laid out and measured the locus, a 2m by 2m square in the far south edge of k12. We began removing the bakhia terrace, f50, then a softer, brown fill underneath, f57. [Input: P824JW2.j] |

During the first pick run of the day in accumulation, f57, encountered another sloping layer of bakhia, similar to f50. Designated it f58, and began carefully following it from the N, down toward the monumental wall, f11. [Input: P825JW.j] |

We continued to excavate the accumulation, f57, under the layer of bakhia, f50, which forms the ancient top of the terrace. Near the end of the day we encountered another layer of bakhia, f58, under f57. [Input: P827JW.j] |

Excavated the last portion of the bakhia packing, f58. Below, we found a brown layer of fill containing ash (most in the NE corner) and deterioriated brick chunks (most along the south edge). Discovered human remains, f60, and a tiny bead, i7, in the NE corner of k104, buried in fill, f59, under the second layer of bakhia, f58. [Input: P828JW.j] |

gM and Zuzan are continuing to prepare the body, a1, for a registered photograph, v24, which will be used as a template for a Freehand drawing of the burial. Designated the ashy material in the NW corner as a lens, f64. Took relays and photographed f64 in relationship to the burial a1, v25. Noticed cracks developing in the E and N baulks. The N baulk looks like it might release several liters of accumulation and packing to the surface below if not excavated properly. [Input: P831JW.j] |

vS, gM and Zuzan excavated the skeleton, f60, and also removed a stone tool, i10 that was located under the hips and was undoubtedly a grave good. Zuzan, removed the bones of the animal, f61, and traced the ashy lens, f64, to the east to determine its extent and relationship, if any to the soil, f65, which surrounds the burial, a1. While photographing, v27, and removing the stones in the south half of the locus, we better defined the interface between the ashy lens, f64 and the red accumulation, f65, to the north in the NE corner. The red accumulation appears as a small wedge, surrounded to the south and west by the ash deposit which covers the N half of the locus, v28. After the k101 stones were removed and safety ropes installed on the f10 stones, we began to excavate in the south half of this locus, extending the southern boundary of the western half to the monumental wall, f11. At the suggestion of gB, we designated this modified locus k105. [Input: P903JW.j] |

Continued to excavate this small locus on the north side of the monumental wall, f11. The components remained the same for the entire day - a fill of mixed materials including ash, soil, and chunks of deteriorated brick, which, in the direct vicinity of the wall, transitions to a vertical layer of bakhia, which in turn was used to seal the "inside" face of the wall against the intrusion of water. We cleaned all sections in k104 and 105 to prepare for final photography and the drawing of sections. [Input: P906JW.j] |

Strategy (projected or implemented) |

gB, faB, and jW met to evaluate the impact of the cracks we see in the east part of the north baulk and the delay occasioned by the careful excavation of the burial, a1, on our plans to excavate a full 2m by 2m locus behind the monumental wall, f11. We decided that it was important to reach the north face of f11 and to excavate at least another meter deeper. gB, faB, and jW suggested that we reduce the excavation area to one that encompasses the south half of the locus. To excavate safely in this confined space, we must remove three large stones that overhang the locus on its south baulk and which are a part of the last phase of f11. Therefore we will photograph, relay, draw, and remove these stones, f66, f67, f68. In addition we will restrain with rope the stones that form the west boundary of the wall apron, f10.
