.bk A16 .fl P902 .fd Notes on sherds from various features .rd Py13 .ri mKB .fn The analysis of the sherds from A16 was completed in the 2005 season by HH and then I looked at all the type sherds feature by feature to get a overall idea of the date of the feature and if possible the function of the sherds in the feature in order to be able to say something about the function of the feature; these notes are a result of that overview. f 2 ns mixed Mittani and Khabur sherds f 4 ns dated to Khabur, Phase 5 f 7 ns Mittani sherds but thick and poorly made; I should check this feature to determine if it could be late Khabur f 10 ns Mittani button bases, some sherds thick and poorly made that may be characteristic of late Khabur. Possibly transitional from Khabur to Mittani f 15 ns 2 disk bases that may be Mit of Khabur, many Khabur and earlier sherds f 25 ns 1 possible LC3 bowl, 1 possible Mittani unpainted jar, mixed, date UC f 27 ns 1 Khabur painted jar, 2 Khabur deep bowl rims, Date Phase 5 f 43 ns few shape sherds, all Khabur f 46 ns Khabur sherds including 1 handle, some earlier sherds, date Phase 5 f 47 ns 1 Mittani base, rest Khabur f 49 ns many typically Khabur sherds but 1 Mittani base f 55 ns 1 ED II scarlet ware stand sherd, rest of pottery is Khabur but 1 large bowl sherd is thicker and heavier than the usual Khabur bowls so may be late Khabur in date f 71 ns dated to Phase 5 on the basis of the painted Khabur pottery including jars and 1 deep bowl f 78 ns many Khabur sherds and 1 possible Mit disk base with wide diameter f 103 ns many Khabur painted sherds, date Phase 5 f 116 ns only 2 shape sherds, date UC f 128 ns 2 small shape sherds, date UC f 130 ns 2 possible disk bases but poorly preserved, date UC f 156 ns 1 Khabur rim, 2nd rim UC f 157 ns many typical Khabur sherds but one double mouth jar sherd probably from Phase 3. f 158 ns several Khabur painted sherds, date Phase 5 f 163 ns Khabur painted bowl and jar sherds, including a dark gray burnished bowl with ribbing at the base of the rim, characteristic thin grooves on top of some jars and bowls (see the Khabur catalog), 1 wide disk base may be Mittani, some sherds characteristic for Phase 4 including beaded rim bowl with rounded carination, 2 vessels (one larger than the other) with deep short diagonal grooves (taken to draw), date probably mixed but may be transition from Phase 4 to Phase 5 nt some sherds secondarily fired as shown on exterior, interior and sections f 165 ns in this pit there are 1 Mittani (or Khabur?) jar sherd, number of characteristic Phase 4 shapes including bowls with ribbing on top of a wide flat rim, bowl and jar with a collared rim sherds with template lines, 1 handmade bowl with a high base (A16q617-p43) the date of which is unknown; but some unpainted Khabur ware shapes including ribbed rim jar with thin incised lines on rib and collar (A16q470-p9), may be transitional from Phase 4 to Phase 5. f 166 ns many Khabur sherds including small footed bases of the Khabur type but smaller than kxdc in the Khabur catalog as it has a diameter of 3mm while the example in the catalog has a diameter of 5. This feature has an example of kp-5- characteristic for the Khabur period and kv--9, a cylindrical vessel f 167 ns rough and heavy flat base sherds (may be late Khabur), 2 wide flat jar or deep bowl rims could be Mittani but no clear Mit painted sherds. Could be Transition between Khabur and Mittani f 170 ns large number of Khabur shapes and some earlier sherds, date Phase 5 f 171 ns Khabur pottery and shows that narrow disk base starts in Phase 5. Also a straight sided jar with flat rim and rib at the base of the rim is typical for unpainted Khabur Phase 5. f 173 ns number of painted Khabur shapes, 1 overfired small bowl of the same shape as those overfired in the A15 kilns (A16q433-p6), 1 shallow bowl (A16q433-p19) has high concentric ribs on the interior of the base. 1 large jar rim has shapr double ribs (A16q433-p11). f 175 ns Good examples of non-painted Khabur pottery, ribbed rims with thin lines, jars with wide flat rims and rib at base of neck (eg. A16q468-p8) bowl in coarse Ch ware with flat rim and ribbing on upper body (A16q484-p4), beginning of wide disk bases (ck this beause I said that wide base is dated to the Mit period in notes for f 185). f 176 ns good examples of unpainted Khabur shapes including Khabur disk bases that are not flat but slightly concave (Mittani disk bases tend to be flat or slightly convex and Khabur disk bases tend to be slightly small in diameter than the wider Mittani examples); some Phase 4 mixed in. Date Phase 5 f 177 ns Khabur period but with some handmade pottery, also good examples of unpainted Khabur pottery. In the Khabur tombs there are in some tombs hand made ceramics, not clear whether this is a chronological factor or not but it may be that during the late Khabur period there are more handmade ceramics (a factor of the known social and political unrest seen in the texts?) f 178 ns no Khabur painted but Khabur shapes, date may be transitinal from Phase 4 to Khabur f 179 ns 2 bowl sherds, date UC f 180 ns Khabur sherds, both painted and unpainted, date Phase 5 f 182 ns wide disk base, possibly Phase 6 or 5, rest unclear f 183 ns many shape sherds, this feature may be transitional from Khabur to Mittani. some Phase 4 but many Khabur shape sherds but of unusual types including a wide disk base (base diameter ca 5cm), another disk base with diameter ca 4cm, 1 fat base with small hole in center, 1 straight sided cup with parallel vertical lines, 1 jar sherd, several flat or convex bases with hole in center, deep bowl with heavy groove marks on the body near the widest part of the body (from other features it appears that heavier clays and handmade shapes are more fequently found in the late Khabur inventory), a deep bowl? with a flat rim with shallow grooving below the rim and a tight zizzag pattern below these f 184 ns many shape sherds in this feature, most are dated to Phase 4 but 2 large Khabur rims may indicate that it is Phase 5. It may also indicate that this feature is transitional between Phase 4 and 5 f 185 ns Khabur sherds with typical thin incised lines on top of rims of jars (eg. A16q566-p3, A16q587-p3); some forms may be Mittani (eg. wide disk base) (wide disk base is Mittani but disk base begins in Kabur period but possibly in Phase 4, see note under f 294) but these are smaller in diameter, see note in f171) so the feature may be transitional between Khabur and Mittani f 186 ns Phase 4 and earlier, 1 Metallic jar sherd f 188 ns sherd types look similar to those in f165 and must also date to Phase 4; it is possible that this feature is transitional to Phase 5 because it contains 1 Khabur painted jar sherd, but this is uncertain because it has no bitumen painted sherds characteristic of phase 4b.Phase 4 sherds include bowl with rounded carinatio and beaded rim, S ware smal isk base, S ware small ring base, S ware radial burnished bowls f 191 ns few shape sherds, 1 small Fc ware bowl, 1 string cut base, Date probably Phase 3 but uncertain because of small number of shape sherds f 195 ns 1 bowl sherd, date probably Phase 5 f 202 ns good Phase 4 types f 204 ns many Khabur sherds including small footed bases, 1 flat bade of a cylindrical jar, 1 possible Mittani jar rim f 205 ns Khabur painted and unpainted f 206 ns Khabur painted rims, 1 dark gray burnished bowl, unusual Khabur incised decoration, date Phase 5 f 211 ns dated to Khabur period because of many Khabur painted shapes f 212 ns 1 Khabur gray burnished ribbed bowl, other Khabur unpainted sherds f 213 ns 6 Late Chalcolithic 3 jar and bowl sherds, 2 jar rims probably Phase 3, mixed and date UC nt since there are in this feature LC3 sherds the context should be interesting to determine f 216 ns few type sherds, date UC f 217 ns date UC f 219 ns 1 unpainted Khabur sherd f 221 ns UC f 222 ns few shape sherds, date UC f 224 ns 1 Khabur painted rim but rest Phase 2 f 226 ns 1 disk basepossibly Khabur, rest earlier including 1 bottle f 232 ns UC f 237 ns painted and unpainted Khabur sherds f 238 ns 1 Khabur painted small jar sherd f 239 ns painted and unpainted Khabur sherds f 240 ns some Phase 4 shapes but also some Phase 5 unpainted sherds, date transition between Phases 4 and 5 f 241 ns many Khabur painted sherds, date Phase 5 f 242 ns Khabur painted and unpainted sherds, date Phase 5 f 243 ns large number of Khabur sherds, date Phase 5 f 244 ns very heavy late Khabur sherds made from heavier clay that earlier Khabur sherds, Khabur disk base, some Phase 4 shapes, mixed f 245 ns many clearly Khabur shape sherds f 249 ns few shape sherds but the examples in the feature are all conical cups or bowls (i.e. no jars), date may be Phase 2 but possibly Phase 3 f 255 ns Phase 4 shape sherds f 256 ns mixed Phases 6,5,2, date UC f 257 ns most sherds are Phase 2 but 1 bowl with slight ribbing on the top of the rim may be Khabur f 258 ns only three rims, Phase 5? f 263 ns Phase 2 Simple ware, 1 possible Phase 4 dark green slightly convex base f 264 ns Phase 3 f 265 ns few shape sherds, date UC f 266 ns Phase 3 cup and jar sherds f 268 ns Phase 4 but 1 Khabur disk base f 269 ns date UC f 270 ns 1 ETC jar sherd, 1 Phase 4 small jar, other possible phase 4 sherds, 1 unpainted bottle may be Phase 4 or Khabur, 1 footed base may be eithern Khabur or Mitanni, sherds are mixed and date UC f 273 ns 1 jar rim, date UC f 275 ns 1 Phase 3 bottle rim but rest UC, date UC f 279 ns 1 unpainted Khabur jar rim, 1 sherd may be from a stand but the shape is rectangular with traces of a hole, disk and footed bases, Date Phase 5 f 280 ns the latest shape sherds from this pit are Khabur but there are a number of sherds from earlier phases such as a narrow ring base, flaring neck jar with interior grooved rim f 281 ns small Khabur painted bowl, bowl with ribbing on the upper body f 282 ns 1 handmade spouted sherd, sherd from a flat sised vessel or a thin baked brick, disk base. Date is possibly Phase 4 but the disk base may be later f 283 ns beaded rim bowl, 1 jar with bitumen paint on the exterior of the rim and neck, date Phase 4b f 285 ns Bi-Color bowls, combed incised decoration, S ware and FC ware, 1 S ware ring base that is more common in Phase 4 but also found in Phase 3, conical cups with string cut bases, dated to Phase 3 f 286 ns flat ring bases (date uncertain), some conical cups in FC ware, string cut bases, an open bowl with plant wiped exterior near the base, it had good examples of conical cups made in Simple ware. This feature is Phase 3 f 287 ns date Phase 4 f 289 ns 2 large sherds of a Phase 4 deep bowl with grooves on the top of the rim f 290 ns only 1 type sherd, date UC f 291 ns bowl with beaded rim with narrow groove at the base of the rim, small carinated bowl, flat base of a small wide bowl Date Phase 4a f 294 ns early Phase 4including much late Simple ware, 1 S ware bowl has a disk? base (do they start in Phase 4 or 5?), several bowls with rounded carination, bowls with a "beaded rim" and shallow groove just under the rim, still conical cups with string cut bases appear as well as bases of these cups that are secondarily flattened after being cut from the wheel. One triangular tab handle but the shape of the vessel is unknown f 295 ns 1 handle painted in dark gray, it is not clear if this paint is bitumen based, date UC f 296 ns 1 rounded M ware base, perhaps Phase 2 f 298 ns mixed, date UC f 299 ns unpainted Khabur shapes mixed with early sherds including Ninevite V, Metallic ware conical cups, Phase 2 incised decorated sherds, Mixed, date UC f 302 ns Phase 3 conical cups, small bowl in RC ware, flat bases, some string cut and some flattened after being string cut, 1 poorly fired small CH or FC bowl, date Phase 3. f 306 ns all Phase 2 f 307 ns many conical cups in S and RC ware, scrapped string cut flat bases, 1 bottle rim, so date must be Phase 3; no Phase 4 type sherds. f 308 ns few shape sherds including 2 S ware bowls, 1 conical cup, 1 coarse CH pot or deep bowl, 1 crescent shaped handle, date either Phase 2 or 3 f 309 ns many Phase 3 shape types; possible that this feature is Phase 2 from other types. This feature was drawn f 314 ns there are few shape sherds in this feature but the ones present are conected with te Simple Ware Tradition (conical cup rims in Simple ware, 1 rim sherd in Fine Pebble Tempered ware, 1 coarse CH ware lid fragment). There are no characteristic Phase 4 type sherds, Date must be Phase 2 or 3. f 316 ns small shapes, many conical cups, 1 possible bottle in RC ware, 1 rope decorated jar sherd of Phase 3 type so date must be Phase 3 f 317 ns 1 large Khabur sherd, but many small S ware jar and bowl sherds, date mixed f 319 ns large handle oval in section (A16q840-p10), M ware bases, may be phase 3 but no enough shape sherds to be certain f 320 ns very few type sherds, date UC, it may help to check the date of burial a21. f 322 ns only 4 shape sherds, date UC f 330 ns 1 Khabur footed base or handle with concentric circles around base (or handle), some earlier Phase 2 and 3 sherds f 331 ns only 3 shape sherds, all are Phase 3 and include 1 conical cup, 1 RC ware small bowl, 1 jar sherd
