J2 includes the western portion of the monumental access to the Temple and its Terrace. There, we have exposed what we assumed to be a full one half od the structure (the other half being the eastern portion that has been excavated only to a minimal extent). The structure is one of the best preserved architectural monuments in third millennium Syro-Mesopotamia, and excavations have provided important insights into the historical development of the Temple Terrace itself and, unexpectedly, into the very end of the occupational history of ancient Urkesh. |
