This showed no significant stratification to the level excavated to the E of A1f66 (i.e., ca. 50cm now). f 5 tc ab f16 -sf sT is recovering from illness and worked at home today. -wk today's operation in A6 involved 6 pickmen (3 large, 3 small) and 9 supporting hands k 217 dy more soil removed today, more 30cm across. The locus was cut as a step, at 2 levels. f 17 dy was excavated W to E to a depth of 5cm to expose any brickfaces to the N and S. A rabbeted brick wall appears on the N. -dy 2 intact jars (2nd mill?) were recovered from close to the surface from the NE corner of k218. The rabbeting of the brick wall along the N baulk of k168 is interesting. .rd C705 .ri rK -sf sT back on field f 2 tc ov f7 tc ov f10 tc ov f12 f 7 tc ov f11 f 11 tc ov f17 f 12 tc ab f11 tc ab f17 .ri sT f 3 tc ov f6 f 6 tc ab f8 tc ov f18 f 16 tc ab f18 -sg our strategy for today is to remove the topsoil from k217,218,219; to reach the ac layers underneath and, we hope, to expose any wall if they exist, as we go down. We are using the big pick in these three areas to remove th topsoil. We are not collecting bones from the topsoil. In k168, we are removing f17 layer by layer, so that we can expose the rabbeting wall to the N. The workmen are using small picks in k168. In k169, we are removing f18, the ac level below f6, with the small pick. .ri rK f 9 ds this was described as the layer of brickfall in k169, below the topsoil. In some ways this duplicated f6 which was defined as ac and brickfall at the same level. In general, f9 was more along the E and N of the locus. We now doubt if brickfall was really the correct description for this feature. A good part of it could have been what resulted from abandonment and accumulation. f 18 ds this layer was defined bot based on strictly identifiable stratigraphy but on convenience. The layer begins at a depth from the top of 52cm at the SE corner and 30 cm at the SW of the locus. There is much less of "brickfall" type material in this layer. -sf sT worked on objects processing at home after the morning break. -wk we had several more workmen today than yesterday that excavation could be carried on to some degree in all 6 loci: 5 large picks, 4 small picks + support. f 13 nr the entire layer was excavated to an additional depth of ca. 30cm, slightly more in the E 1/2. No major finds. f 14 nr another 30cm of topsoil removed; no major finds f 15 nr more topsoil removed. Appears to have reached brick at the NW corner, that seems to continue the wall A1f76. f 17 nr removed another 3 cm for surface barring the pedestal left holding the skull. The S face A1f79 has been exposed and part of the rabbeting that corresponds to the E face of A1f64 doorway. f 16 dy The S edge of this in k167 was scraped to reveal absence of brick parallel to the "doorway", or "closet" now being identified. f 19 nr the topsoil/gulley wash in the N baulk of k168 is being removed over the "closet" in order to identify and excavate the features below. -dy GB's analysis that there is another closet past the doorway in k168 parallel to A1a1 is partially corroborated. --i we currently have 6 squares open. 3 of them are past topsoil, into the level of hard ac or brickfall (k167-169), the other 3 are new from which all topsoil has not yet been removed. rK and sT have primary responsibility to supervise work in this area. -sg our strategy has to take into consideration the number of workmen and tools available along with the need to analyze the current strata of some loci better before proceeding with much more work there. -- [A] Since k217-219 are being opened for excavation, removal of topsoil there has priority and can be carried with minimal supervision. Currently k217 has been cut into 2 steps since it is on EW downward slope of the tell. The upper (E) half will be made level (the SE quadrant has not been lowered yet) and then soil will be removed for another 30cm throughout (barring unexpected finds). -- [B] It seems to us that further excavation in k167 can help us answer some important questions such as: (1) if the rabbeted face of brick is one side of a doorway, what does it open into? (2) is there a room N of k167 or is what we have the outer wall? note: k117 N of the wall f78 did not contain any significant cultural artifacts, ac, floor, etc. (3) wall A6f16 is >2m broad so that it could very well be an outer wall; (4) digging further down might help us to see if the flat rock, with brick below it, in the NE corner of k167 is part of a structure. So we shall consult with GB about digging down in f5. Perhaps one or two workmen can be assigned here to dig with the small pick. -- [C] The floors of k168,169 need to be scraped, scored before further excavation. -- [D] The remaining workmen shall be assigned to k218 to remove topsoil until k219 is scraped and studied. v 1 ds shows emplacement of skull in f7 v 1a ds closeup of emplacement of skull in f7 v 2 ds shows section of f17 with context v 3 ds shows location of i01,02. i1 was replaced on site in order to photograph; i02 has original emplacement. v 4 ds kite photos taken on C703 for A6 area and k168 .fl C710rk.j .ei rK .ed C710 .ri RK .rd C701 -lb As of C704, notes for everything in k167,168,169,217,218,219 will be maintained in book A6. rK and sT have been assigned to maintain this book. .rd C706 .ri rK -sf rK on site along with Apo Panossian (aP) .fn following label changed by lC on ZH511 q 46.1 ds worked bone 7x2 ;q 46-o .fn following label changed by lC on ZH511 q 48.1 ;q 48-l ds worked stone 10x8x6 .fn following label changed by lC on ZH511 ;q 48-f q 48.2 ds clay figurine 5x3 .rd C706 .ri rK f 22 ds the character of soil in k219 seems to change 30-40 cm below suface in the NE corner, 12 cm below surface in SE. The locus has already been cut to a depth below this and the accumulation from the levels now reached will be treated as f022. f 22 ds k219 has already been cut as 3 steps: 55x120, 3 cm below topsoil in NE corner; to a distance of 135 cm from E baulk a second step along the whole NS length to a depth of 60cm at the N, 20 cm in S; step 3 being the lowest level in the locus, 260 cm wide NS along the W border of locus at depths from surface of 85 cm NE, 45 cm SE, 10 cm SW, and 35 cm NW. f 23 ds k217 has been excavated on 2 steps. The lower level (W) now reached is being called f023. Depth from top: SW 60; NW 40; NE 80; SE 102. The higher step (E) which continues as f013 is currently at the following depths from top: NE 102; SE 95; SW 85; NW 80. nr A sealing and another clay lump for seal was recovered today from the area being renamed f023. Workmen were instructed not to remove objects from their emplacement if detected in place and to call us first. .rd C707 f 25 ds a grave f023. Workers first found a bone when digging to the E and the area was then left undisturbed. Further removal of accumulation and cleaning revealed the outline of a grave in f023. The skeleton is oriented NS with the skull at N. What appears to be the right humerus is positioned on top. Section of ac just above the grave evidences top soil extending from the top down to the skeleton. The grave is 180 cm from W boundary of locus. tc in f023 f 18 dy no signifcant finds in approx. 8 cm of ac removed today. f 14 tc ov f026 f 26 ds W 2/3 of k219 has been cut below level of topsoil. This will be treated now as a separate feature. f 28 ds the "closet" in k168 has been cut down to a level below the topsoil gulley wash and are to the level of the stone wall. The accumulation in this specific area will be discussed under this new feature number. f 24 ds ac that remained connected to the N baulk of k168. The feature number pertains only to the limited amount that remained and was removed when the closet was being excavated. tc ov f028 f 19 tc ov f024 f 27 tc in f014 ds assumed to be a grave based on pattern of stone and brick emplacement on top; in SE corner of k218 f 17 dy excavated further today beginning with the handpick and later with the large pick to an additional depth exceeding 10 cm today. f 26 dy found baked brick along W broder of k218 close to NW corner at a depth of 54 cm from the top. This more or less marks the upper border of ac f026. The ac is similar to the abandonment pattern. An ashpit found along the S border of locus at this level extends to (& perhaps goes past) the step along the E of locus that still continues as f014. f 15 dy As excavation proceeded in the SE quadrant, first found ash, then large sherds that extended into the E baulk (and apparently belonged to the same vessel), and then a very large chunk of what seems to be "kiln waste" below the level and to the W of the sherds. There is a clear and obvious pattern in the accumulation and topsoil of very high firing 150 cm from SE corner. Ash and "kiln waste" 60 cm W of E baulk. -dy Excavation proceeded in all squares except k167. .ri gB .rd C708 -dy reviewed in detail entire unit f 8 tc bo f30 bo seems to form a doorway to the West; so face of wall is very clear, and it served to show several beginners on the staff how to pick the vertical face nc bonding is not in evidence but the two walls clearly form a corner. .ri rK .rd C709 -sg we have two major priorities today. One is to go down in k168 & the associcated closet fast to the level of A1f113. The other is to determine with certainty the face of the wall in k217. So 2 workmen are digging f017 with the large pick. 2 workmen are also digging with the handpick in f023 to expose the faces of the wall. In k217 the main goal is to go the lower levels, barring surprises. f 6 nr the lower steps left along the N & E borders have been removed. There was a red brick at the top, 50 cm below surface at the corner of the two walls, that had no brick underneath. This was therefore removed. A red brick is still visible in section, extending lengthwise to the N at this level. f 6 nr all of the this feature past the baulk has now been removed. .ed C710 .rd C704 f 1 A1 A1f124 f 2 A1 A1f129 f 3 A1 A1f130 f 4 A1 A1f125 f 5 A1 A1f133 f 6 A1 A1f141 f 7 A1 A1f143 f 8 A1 A1f144 f 9 A1 A1f146 f 10 A1 A1f147 f 11 A1 A1f150 f 12 A1 A1f153 f 13 A1 A1f152 f 14 A1 A1f149 f 15 A1 A1f154 k 167 A1 ASk167 k 168 A1 ASk168 k 169 A1 ASk169 k 217 A1 ASk217 k 218 A1 ASk218 k 219 A1 ASk219
