Distance between center of skull as it presented itselfand the center of the small jar near it is 17.5 cm. The gap between the edges of the skull and the jar is 7 cm. q 348p nr There was a seal impression among the sherds in this lot. i 50 nr Careful excavation around the skull showed that it was not in fact a skull by itself, and that the rest of the skeleton is present. i 53 ds small pot near skeleton's skull. i 52 ds larger pot farther away from skeleton's head. .rd G707 .ri rK f 107 pr to be cut down another 10 cm to reach a level partially reached before; section shows no significant difference from level above. k 218 dy The N half of the E terrace has been lowered to <10 cm above the W part of the locus. In the S 1/4 of the terrace is located a12, the burial. This has also been significantly lowered. The rest of the terrace (2nd 1/4 from the S) has multiple strata. The top is being collected as f108. This comes down to and includes a band of ashen ac (stones/sherds). Below this band is being named f111, although on G706 it was treated as f108. a12 was in former f108, but would now correspond to f111. -sf jm and rs practiced use of the handpick on the floor of k169 where the section is being extended Nward. f 120 nr the top layer of the section cut on the floor of k169 from the doorway on the W seems to be wadi deposition. f 111 ds light brown, hard, packed f 108 ds more ashen than f111, less hardly packed. .rd G709 .ri rK a 12 nl Technically (i.e., re: Encoding Manual) this aggregate was not defined methodically. Upon discovery that the skeleton was complete and that it was a burial, an aggregate number was assigned to the whole without first assigning numbers to the associated features. .rd G707 ds At the level of the location of the skeleton, there is brick surrounding it. The skeleton is positioned sideways, facing NW, right hand side on top. Hip and knee joints are flexed. One "bronze" bracelet is present on EACH hand. Elbows are flexed. The large jar previously observed (i52) is touching the toes. The head is facing down. The small jar is by the hand and mouth. The workman, upon brushing the space behind the skull excavated a hole, obviously with soft, loosely packed fill. Its only observable content was dust. ds Measurements as found: Head to toe 63 cm; width at hip: 23 cm; Distance between centers ofthe two bracelets: 8 cm.; Distance of bracelets from the point between the head (i 50) and the small jar (i 53) used for triangulating the skull (i 50): 15cm & 22 cm. f 108 ds toward the bottom of f108 more bricks were found, but in association with a12. Not all bricks were neatly or regularly emplaced. f 111 ds Large bone found in NE corner of locus as excavated, within this feature. Not obvious if human or animal bone. .rd G708 a 12 ar re: burial a12. The assortment of rocks and ash in the SE corner of locus, labeled f23 during MZ7, and defined as a burial seems, in fact not to be part of the burial located in f111. Horizontally, f23 is disassociated from a12 by being more to the E. Vertically, its cut did not relate in any outline to the brick layer above a12. The contents rocks in f23 ended with the ash layer of f108. As regards burial a12, section along the S baulk, 50 cm from the skull, shows no clear indication of a cut reaching down, although bricky inclusions are visible. We encountered the burial not through exposure of any cut into the ac here, but on excavation beyond the ash layer associated with the end iron which had brick and hard packing underneath. Removal of this first exposed the skull, the associated jars and the whole skeleton. a13, just exposed, also in f111, and with sections extending all the way above it NS as well as EW along the two baulks meeting in the NE corner, shows no clear evidence of a pit cut from above. It is possible that neither a12 nor a13 involved a grave dug down from higher strata for emplacement of the bodies. k 218 dy The W baulk was prepared for removal by cutting a section along its length and scoring. It was scored as 3 bands. The top sod layer, f116, was removed without collecting sherds or bones. The layer below,f117, had grey accumulation, 14 cm at the S end and widening to 45 cm S of f36, the loose bricks in the NW corner. This was partially removed today. The rest of the baulk as it exists above the present floor of k218 corresponds to f111. .rd G709 f 122 ds ac containing bones of human skeleton in NE corner and baulk of k218; part of a13. a 13 cp f122 .rd G708 a 13 ds human adult burial in NE corner of k218. No evidence of grave cut from above. Occurs in f111 as was a12. Only the lower extremity bones have been exposed. The rest are expected to be in the E and N baulks. No intact pottery seen in the portion of the burial so far exposed. No evident brickwork. Several bricks seen in locus at this level are quite removed from the skeleton--along the N baulk about midway, at the edge of the former terrace are 2 bricks; hard ac with thin red layyer on top in the middle (NS) on the terrace. Elevations were taken for these. q 378b P99 replaced in f122 for reburial in place under back fill for later complete excavation. The bones were left in the plastic bag. A piece of plastic was laid over this and the exposed remains of the skeleton. Stones were placed over the plastic to keep it in place. k 218 dy almost all of the square is down to the same level. So layer on W baulk has been removed. The grey ac below has been partially removed. a13 has been left in the corner of the locus covered with plastic. a12 was completely removed. a 12 nr completely excavated. Jars and bracelets were removed; bones placed together in a box designed for storing human bones prior to study & reburial. f 120 nl created post facto for record keeping purposes to label the sherds collected when cutting the section.
