.bk A6 .fl G716RK.J .fd Journal entries from G706 by rK, jO & jM .ei rK .ed G716 .fn original file name G716RK.J-A, changed manually by lC on ZH228 .ri jO .rd G706 k 168 sg We will have one workman levelling the remaining 50 cm NS part of ur 150 x 210 excavated are of f101 to reach the approx. 20 cm depth of the rest of it. Another workman will scrape the W baulk of k168. The third workman assigned to the square will work in the far S of k168, to make a N section in f101 in order to be able to look at f101 and the strata underlying it. The section will be cut in k169 toward k168. k 169 nr Wadi accumulation is still present on the floor of k169. We will remove it in order to expose the layers of ac that parallel f101 in k168. k 168 ds After cleaning along the W wall f123 in the area in which we dug 20 cm deep, it appeared that the stone wall still continues down, which means that the floor associated with it is still to be exposed. dy We proceeded by digging towards the S 200 cm from the E baulk to avoid disturbing the threshold. We examined the section and did not find any indication of it. .rd G707 k 168 sg We will continue our operation where it was left off yesterday. Two pickmen will be assigned to excavate f101 to a depth of 20cm and one in k169 to remove f109 and f110. f 109 ds Wadi ac 10cm deep. f 110 ds Light gray hard, but not very compact; might be the equivalent of f101. .ri jM -dy Grey ac f109 getting thinner toward N, not even. Started digging feature 110 to have a fresh look at the section in order to see the different levels and the lining between f109 and f110. The floor section in k169 is being advanced toward k168. .ri jO f 101 ds reddish compact accumulation k 168 dy f101 was excavated to a depth of 20cm as planned, in the direction of doorway a3. We did not expand the excavated area toward the E, for reasons noted. k 169 dy We made a N section by digging 60 cm below the existing floor level. We could distinguish 5 layers of ac/floor in the section. They were assigned features numbers 109,110,113,114,115, successively, from the top to the bottom. .rd G708 k 168 sg We will excavate f101 as far as doorway a14. After that the lower unexcavated part of the same feature will be removed from the S, from k169, f110. k 168 sg In thtis square we will remove all of f109 in order to expose and excavate f110 below it which appears to be the equivalent of f101. k 217 sg The remainder of f112 will be removed until we reach the top of wall f44. Then we will quickly remove the W part of the pedestal over f44 that has been left for purposes of documentation and section during the present excavation season. f 119 ds A step formed by 2 plastered bricks was found at the S half of the doorway above f110, at the same level of f101. .rd G710 .ri rK f 116 nr Most of the middle of this layer on the baulk has been removed. Cleared ca. 80cm @ the S, 60 cm on the N; width 60 cm. f 36 ds This is the loose assemblage of bricks in the NW corner of k218 that was identified (and labelled) during the previous season. One of the bricks was removed as a q-item. 3 more pieces were found on removal of f122 from the baulk. 2 pieces are complementary parts of the same brick; the third one is a whole trapezoidal brick as the one removed. These were temporarily deposited in k219 which is not being currently excavated. k 218 sg On G710 the baulk on the W should be cut down to be level with the remaining floor. The floor should be levelled, divided into four quadrants and excavated. f 124 ds The ground underneath the brick layer in the NW corner of the locus. The ac here is less tightly packed and less red. Horizontally, 95 cm due S of m1420. Elevation same as relay xx f 118 ds We expect to find the brick of the wall when this is cleared. At the moment only isolated patches of red are observable. 70-80 cm from N baulk, the color and texture of the ac seem to differ slightly from what was removed in the W (50-60 cm). Also, a workman found a patent (rodent) hole ending at this level. sg Once the present level of ac f118 is cleared, one pickman shall follow the side of the brick wall on the S removing the ca. 8cm top layer that remains over a reddish lower ac. i 58 ds The egg was found in hole. It was not open to the outside at the time of the excavation, but we can not be sure that a bird did not make that nest during the 4 years since MZ7 when the baulk in its current exposure was cut. The shell looked new but light enough to be fully dry. k 217 ds Our aim has been to expose the top surface of the wall below and east of the pedestal. At the present all of the E surface is not visible. However, elevation on either side of the pedestal over the wall f44 is identical. See relays 144,145. I.e, there is still accumulation left over the brick layer of the wall on the E (we are not expecting a doorway here). sg Hammadi will clear the ac to the S & E of the wall. Ahmad Kher will follow the wall boundary along the N. k 218 dy The W baulk has been removed. The E half still is about 3 cm higher than the W half of the locus. So the workmen have been assigned to level the floor. f 126 ds This feature is located for the most part within the N baulk of k218 in the NW corner. The layer of bricks, f36, was adjacent to it. At about this level,in close proximity extending into k168, was f67, a horizontal layer of plastered stones, just below the topsoil (see A6v22). This was excavated during MZ7. There is a large stone slab, width 50-56cm, 75-80cm long, 10-15cm thick, resting at the bottom level of f111, its largest surface facing S, at 45 deg. to the vertical. Underneath it are sherd and rocks. We have wondered in the past if this covered a burial. f 129 ds This is accumulation below f118 on the wall. We were not able to find brick at the top level of the wall where expected. But it appears in part so that the wall is present. The top surface seems to have been mildly disturbed/cut. There is also indication of plaster overlaying the layer of brick at the corner on the S face of the wall where it jogs in to narrow. .rd G711 f 116 nl This was assigned to the sod layer on the W baulk which is to be removed. It is also now defined to include the N baulk. ds 3 cms deep. nr No sherds or bones were collected from this layer. f 151 ds Under f116 on the N baulk. f 116 tc co f151 -wk Two pickmen and 3 supporting hands are jon loan to A7 until the baulk between k217 and k218 is removed and it is safe to work in k217. It is impossible to keep stones and dirt from falling about 2 meters down into that locus.
