.bk A6 .fl G801rk.j .fd Excavation diary of RK from G721 on .ed G801 .ei rk .ri rK .rd G721 k 218 dy Removal of ac at the N 1/3 of locus; new k defined. All of the area in k218 + the area in k217 S of the wall f78 has been now defined as a new locus, k21. f172 was removed; this was a cut into the layers of ac--see view 73, 73a. Recovery of f166 in this part was completed on G720. Below f166, f169 was likewise removed. f174 was defined as the red layer below the first partial gray layer in the section cut in the NW of the locus (f167). f173 was removed today. It was continuous with f169 as well as f174. f 174 ds Did not extend > 100 cm into k217. tc ov f176 f 175 nr Some f175 was removed at the beginning of the recovery of f174 when the big pick pulled it up. ds Accumulation in the narrow section cut in k21, adjoining k167 on the E; assigned to label the sherds and bones recovered from here since strata were not respected in cutting the small section. -dy ?? Is there a floor between f166 and f169 -gray??? Is there a floor between f174 and f176? .rd G722 .ri rK f 174 ds band of gray seen in section was non-uniform and ceased as we traced it E and S. Must have been a shallow depression analogous to pits. q 521 ds The red ac in a 45 cm wide band to the W of pit f172 was removed with the large pick. This was treated as part of f169. q 522 ds Below q521 @ the level of f176 to which feature it was assigned. Has dark brown ac, disturbed by roots etc. A soil sample was collected from the lowest level of this. f 160 ds From simple observation of the accumulation, f160,166,169,and 176 really have only their vertical dimensional position distinguishing them. They are all hard reddish accumulation with isolated patches of gray. q 523 ds Sherds etc from 9cm above the bottom of pit from the W side of pit f29. q 524 ds sherds etc from S of f78. On G721 these were assigned to f174 since we were tracing a gray/black layer; but that did not last long. The accumulation in this was not very distinct from f176. k 217 dy Observed cut on E section reaching down to burial f64 excavated from the E border at the end of MZ7. A very vertical cut whose bottom is very square. It reaches down 220 cm to the bottom of the cut from about 120 cm below the top of the sod layer. f 78 dy The removal of the accumulation abutting f78 showed that the S face does not in fact jog in as believed before. What we have is a cut on the top of the original wall that removed a layer of bricks along the South. k 21 dy Part of the locus has now been lowered to below the top of the brick wall while the SW quadrant beside the wall had been lowered before the N 1/2 of k218 being currently lowere to reach this level. -sg Our current strategy in k21 is to lower the entire square to approx. 320 cm W of f78 uniformly, clarify the section to the S, draw it, and excavate to that depth at least as far S as the S limit of A8 now being excavated. If time permits we shall excavate all of k21. Otherwise, we shall maintain the same S limit as A8 and seek to reach the original floors. f 176 nr Accumulation from f176 removed in the W was looser than the rest. Should this be treated as a separate feature?? (q521,522) q 522.1 ds This was collected from below the horizontal location that belonged to f173. But the whole of the ac at this level was uniform throughout the q. c# 4/3 5 YR co Reddish brown .ri rS q 522.1 c# 5/3 2.5 YR co Reddish brown .ri rK f 176 nr Since the color of the accumulation in the NE was quite different compared to the NW, a soil sample was again collected. q 528 ds from area 60 cm wide E of f29 45 cm W of f29 to its floor level. f 70 nr The bones sticking out of the baulk in the pedestal along the E were excavated today--q529. .rd G723 -sg Remove backfill in k169. Section @ N of k218 being completed. Thereafter we will go down in k21 with the large pick. k 177 dy Begins where k176 ended; a few isolated bricks are present. We are going down with the large pick. One old pot smash was found and the sherds collected.
