In k30 we are getting a clearer idea of the outline of the brick wall (f303) and the stone wall, f306, and their relationship. Several stones and stone aggregates are found emplaced at the level reached in the W, with removal of f304. v 102 ds View of k30 with walls and stone aggregates. The closeups show the mud-brick wall f303, the stone wall f306 and aggregates a16 and a17. -wk One workman from Mozan village who was not feeling well was sent home. a 16 ar a collection of stones with a smooth round broken stone in the middle, along with some sherds. A pot sits adjacent and immediately to the E of the stones and its rim is at the level of the stones. There is no evidence of a cut and we should conclude that the pot does not belong with the stones but is of an earlier stratum. f 310 ar A floor surface can be defined on the basis of the stone aggregates a16,17 and isolated stones present on this level (see v102). The surface has the appearance of a floor and we are defining it as such. Excavation of f309 cut past this. Thus, f309 is an accumulation on a floor earlier than f310. tc co f309 f 309 ds This is a floor accumulation that is below floor f310 and belongs to an earlier floor. f 304 tc ab f311 co f311 f 311 tc ab f306 f 351 ds interface between f215 and f220. This corresponds to the level one would step up to the E from k25. f 220 ar f215 was a layer of accummulation that covered the platform f142 and extended up from its top surface, as we defined it. Since f142 had a gypsum coating, it is doubtful that f215 was a floor packing that was laid at the time of the construction of the threshold. f215 must therefore be later than f142. f220 was defined as the deposition that was covered by f215 and extending up to the top level of the threshold f142. However, there is no clear transition between f215 and f220. The section does not indicate any difference between the two accumulations. They are both hard pinkish deposits with grayish patches and inclusions of carbonized material in addition to sherds and bones. The workmen expressed the feeling that they were one and the same; they felt alike to remove, and were a hard packed accumulation of the same type. Even though this accumulation is relatively free of artifacts, it is unlikely to be a floor packing because it covers a gypsum coated threshold. Since it appears that f215 and f220 are the same accumulation, it would also seem that f142 was not a threshold that stepped up to room k22, but that it was a barrier of sorts between k22 and k25. So entering room k22 required stepping down from f142. f 215 ar see under f220 f 311 dy we removed the two layers of brick because they were sitting on a base of earth. It appears from this that f306, the stone wall that it abutted, consisted of a layer of stones that existed above the bottom level of the bricks. The stone layer seems to be sitting over earth. f 220 dy Excavations began at the W end of the S 1/3 of the area and was carried all the way to the E to meet the baulk left in the SE corner of the room. The accumulation shows no clear discontinuity with f215 which covers it, and none is observable in the section. There is a fair amount of carbonized material but the accumulation in general is pinkish brown with gray interspersed. It is quite hard. One good seal impression was recovered today. -dy k22: All of f215 has been removed. f220 has been removed in ~~~ca. 1/3 of the room, along the S. f220 is not distinct from f215. We will maintain the same speed of excavations. k30: We have uncovered and gone past the latest level of occupation so far encountered in the area--perhaps late Khabur-early Nuzi. This consisted of floor deposits associated with a mud-brick wall extending SW from the E baulk, which was abutted at a right angle by a stone wall from the N. The floor (f310) associated with these walls had a mud-brick bench, and stone aggregates on it. The E side of the stone wall seemed to have a more abundant deposit of sherds. Among the sherds collected from the stone aggregate a16 on this floor was one with crescents impressed on a ridge. Also f304 which is an accumulation on this floor (f310) yielded parts of a small bowl (q717) which has characteristic Khabur painting (2 horizontal stripes) on it. We are in the process of recovering the structures associated with this floor in order to view the foundation of the walls and to reach a lower floor. -sg For the week starting H621: (1) Excavate deposits abutting f306, to the N and E. (2) Excavate the deposits abutting f303 to the SE. (3) Clarify the foundation of the stone wall to see whether it is associated with both the floor f310 and the lower floor f313. (4) Remove deposits on floor f313 to clarify the foundation of the brick wall f303. (5)When we are able to clearly associate the walls with their original strata, we shall remove them to excavate the earlier levels. a 17 ds At this point the stone aggregate does not seem to be anything more than a superficial arrangement of unknows function/use. v 102 ds shows the general layout of the mudbrick wall f303 and the stone wall f306. f306 had not yet been clearly delineated and some deposition, initially thought to be brick, remained on it close to where it abuts the brick wall. The stone aggregates a16, a17, and their spatial relationship to the walls can also be seen. v 103 ds Shows the brick wall f303 and the associated pot smash f312 and the stone bench f314 which belongs to the lower floor f313. f312 was collected as i203 with the intent of restoration. f 311 tc re f309 tc ab f306 a 16 tc re f310 a 17 tc re f310 f 314 tc re f313 f 309 tc ov f313 f 312 tc re f313 f 310 co f309
