With the baulk cut back so much, the actual boundaries of the fissure and the higher features are much more clear than before. v167a is a tight view of the lower half of the revealed stones from below, v167b is a tight view of the upper half of the revealed stones from below. On account of foreshortening, the distances between layers or stones shown becomes less accurate the further one gets away from the plane of the camera; however, the baulk is too large and the underground structure too confined to take a level photo of the entire baulk. v 168 ph This is a view from overhead, looking down at the western half of the A12 south baulk. Note how the stones of f375 stick out from the wall, curving on the same axis as the stones below, and how the stones of f376 rest against them. v171a is a tight view of f352, the base of the former west wall of a33, which circles around the entire underground structure. v171b focuses on the join between f352 and f375: although there is no clear seam, it is possible that they constitute two separate phases of construction, due to the differences in size between the stones themselves and the spacing between them. v171c is a tight view of the seam between a36 and a33 at the base of f375 and f376. This has led us to consider three phases of construction, a lower circle, a higher circle that coincided with the construction of the upper palace, and the square. f 375 H99 A closer look at the stones in f352 and in f375 suggests that the two walls might actually not be the same construction, but be from different phases of construction in the same place. The stones of f352, and of the lower walls within a33 in general, are, on average, much smaller than the stones above, such as in f375. In addition, the spacing between the stones is smaller. This has led us to consider three phases of construction, a lower circle, a higher circle that coincided with the construction of the upper palace, and the square. f 353 M99 The stones of f353, which we have presumed to be the outer face of the wall f352, are all fairly homogenous, i. e. smaller and blocky, with the exception of the three southernmost, which are much larger and very smooth, as if they had been worn down by much traffic passing over them. Perhaps these stones were a part of the original accessway into the underground structure, a ramp leading down, that was replaced later with a stairway. This might also make sense of the brick material found around f354 and f355; if, as I have speculated under f352 and f375, there were actually three phases of construction, then the bricks might have formed the walls and roof of the structure in its earliest phase, with these stones marking the entrance.
