.bk A14 .fl O802jw.j .fd daily journal for O728 and feature descriptions for f301-305 .ei jw .ed O802 .rd O728 .ri jw -wk Thirty-one reported for work. -sn jw drew sections of the east baulk of k4 (string elevation m3673+86-156=8243cm) and the east and north baulks of k13 (string elevation m3542+95-165=8251cm). -dy work today focused on the removal of baulks in preparation for ceasing all excavation as scheduled tomorrow, O729. We are removing the second series of jars and cups which belong to pottery cache a20 from living accumulation, f278, in k4. In k3 we are excavating two accumulations, f299 and f300, in order to see if they overlay the floor surface, f213, seen in the north baulk of k4 near its juncture with k3. In k22, we are carefully excavating the east baulk of k22 to see if we can find the structural mechanism for keeping the large stone f296 in place. -sg With respect to baulk removal, we will clear only the modern topsoil/gully wash from the E-W line of baulks which includes the north baulks of k24, k23, k22, and k21. This will contribute to the understanding of the erosional effects of the ancient gully which washed through the abi and down the slope to the west. k 5 dy Finished excavating the east end of the thin remainder of the north baulk down to the level of surface, f213, seen in k4. Finished excavating the east baulk to the level of surface, 213, seen in k4. k 4 dy Continued to clear living accumulation from atop surface, f213, and preparing to remove a second group of restorable jars and cups from cache a20. Removing fill, f203, from pit, a15. k 14 dy Continued to excavate the north baulk, clearing living accumulation,f278 (k4 feature) from atop working surface, f213 and removing fill, f303, from pit, a22. k 3 dy Separate report being written by dc, who is supervising the excavation of this locus. Located an irregularly shaped patch of soft, brown soil, about 50cm in diameter in the middle of the locus. k 22 dy Removed the last remnants of accumulation, f277, from the east baulk. Below there were three features at the same elevation: a red accumulation, f307, to the south, a grayish accumlation filled with gravel (and containing two modern food cans) to the north, and, in the middle, a stone and sherd surface, f305. sg With the concurrence of gb, we will stop excavating here for the season. There is not enough time to explore the relationship between the surface, f305 and the stone, f296. Although it is clear that f308 is modern gully wash, we cannot say to what extent it may have eroded f305 and whatever structural mechanism supported the large stone, f296. If we dug more in this restricted area in the hours remaining this season, there is a good chance that we would loosen f296 and destroy whatever stratigraphic links with the abi entrance remain. f 301 df st-is ds About 38 large stones, ranging in size from wheelbarrow to watermelon, scattered in many loci throughout the unit. Most appear to have been carried downhill to the west from the vicinity of the palace and abi by the action of water and gravity. f 302 df ly ds Several courses of deteriorated bricks along the south baulk of k21 just to the south of the abi entrance. Relationship with the abi or possible structures to the south cannot be determined this season due to limited time. f 303 df fi ds Fill of a pit, appearing as a half-circle in the north baulk of k14. A component of aggregate, a22, along with cut, f317. f 304 df l ds Lens of soft, brown soil seen at the east edge of accumulation, f299, in the middle of k3. f 305 df pc ds Surface of stones and sherds in the middle of the east baulk of k22.
