Definition 2002-09-16 jlw kiln waster [Input: M916jw.j]
Description (summary) 2002-09-16 jlw one of a number of over-fired pottery sherds that have become coated with greenish vitrified material in the course of exposure to high temperature that were taken from accumulation directly above the northernmost of two pit kilns, a30, in k13. This cylinder of soil, about 2m in diameter and 50cm high, topped by a layer of vertically laid bricks, may have been the chamber of another pit kiln, for some reason not as well preserved. This example is extraordinary in that it contains both sheep dung and animal bones which would have been used as fuel in kilns of this type. One may speculate that these sherds were used as spacers to separate the vessels being fired. [Input: M916jw.j]
