description (summary) | 2008-7-14 | yM | animal figurine made out of clay possibly an equine figurine. The head, the legs, and the tail are missing. The figurine is painted, with stripes visible in a reddish brown color, munsell number 2.5YR 4/6 reddish brown. The surface of one side as well as a portion of the belly area are painted. The stripes also follow partially toward the front leg. The other side has incrustations of soil, so we cannot tell if it has a similarly painted surface. | [Input File: S811lr.j] |

description (summary) | 2008-7-22 | eE | a small copper alloy piece shaped as a small scraper with a flat rectangular tool surface. As a tool, it may have been appropriate for small scale detail or finishing work. It is fine enough also to be considered as a medical tool. description (summary) | 2008-9-17 | lC | Possible andiron very fragmented. It has been excavated very carefully but the andiron was very badly preserved, because it was just below the topsoil. daily notes | 2008-7-20 | yM | This andiron was discovered under the topsoil of k15 and is in very fragile condition. We are excavating it by cleaning the surface first using very delicate tools in order to articulate it carefully, and then we will remove it.The broken pieces of the andiron are covered with soil that can not be removed easily. Due to the andiron's poor condition, we plan to remove it in pieces and not attempt to block it out for fear that it will collapse in the process. Photographs are being taken to document the steps of the excavation and the removal. After the surface was cleaned, we began removing the soil between the andiron fragments. The pieces are being removed one at a time and stored in a box. Our intention for spending so much time articulating and removing this andiron is based on an attempt to see if any surfaces are incised however nothing was found to suggest such as surface. | [Input File: S813yM3.j] |

description (summary) | 2008-9-08 | lC | Fragmentary jar preserved for about 50%, exactly half is missed, but both the rim and the base are preserved. The base is flat (Mz type xf). The body is semi globular in shape and the rim is flat on top and thickened externally, with a rectangular section. | [Input File: S908lC.j] |

daily notes | 2008-7-22 | lR | Broken jar found while removing f27, brick melt. We initially anticipated the brick melt to be deeper since in the trench, the brick melt was approximately 10 cms then brickfall underneath, totally 30 cms until reaching the ash. After removing 10cms in the western half of k3, ash was found with i11 surfacing within the ash. The base is at a slight oblique angle. A large tannur fragment was found immediately to the east and may be associated with the jar. | [Input File: S722lr.j] |
notes on recovery | 2008-7-23 | lR | Removed the jar today after mKB looked at it. The jar while fragmented appears quite complete. After the jar was removed the area was scraped and cleaned revealing several cobblestones below, forming a pavement f43. This contextualizes the jar, associating it with a floor and tannur f29. | [Input File: S723lr.j] |

description (summary) | 2008-7-27 | eE | rectangular clay artifact with a flat rear surface and a raised frontal surface with a stepped plan profile. The uppermost raised portion is made up of rounded linear segments that extend parallel to the length. It is tempting to see human or animal features in these forms, particularly in the well preserved portions, where facial and upper body elements can be interpreted. These are however too subtle and inconsistent to be conclusive. | [Input File: S811lr3.j] |

description (summary) | 2008-8-13 | eE | large stone object with an ovular concave depression in the center. The stone has a rough surface finish throughout with the center area slightly more refined in its finish. The ovular area has an approximate diameter of 20 cm. This ovular portion may have been used for grinding purposes; it is constructed in a rough geometrical shape with what seems to be a combination of natural erosion and once worked surfaces. Its similarity to a doorpost is intriguing, but given the size of the depression, the first possibility seems more likely. | [Input File: S813sE.j] |

description (summary) | 2008-8-17 | eE | a small, solid cast nail-shaped piece with a relatively well preserved surface. One end is slightly pointed and the other is flat. The diameter is consistent throughout. Near the flat end, there appears to be an unusual protrusion of excess metal. This area may have resulted from unusual oxidation patterns. Alternatively, it may have been the result of an explosion in a mould where the metal escaped the shape of the mould due to the heat or weakness in the mould, or a combination of the two. Viewed in this manner, this piece may have been part of a gating system vent used for casting a small piece in the lost-wax method. Closer inspection of similar occurrences may reveal more about this process and its prevalence at Mozan. | [Input File: S820sE.j] |

description (summary) | 2008-8-20 | eE | a small cylindrical iron fragment bent along one end into a cane-shape. The piece is covered almost entirely with soil encrustation, beneath which is a thick layer of iron oxide. The consistency of the diameter makes it difficult to detect a taper or possible point to indicate a pin or needle. There is also the possibility that the piece was left over for a casting process. However, taking into account that it was found beneath topsoil, it can be compared to an iron piece from J7 topsoil (q 45.3), a dirk which preserves a rivet inserted through the tang of the blade in order to hold a wooden handle in place. The diameter of this rivet, 0.3 cm, matches well with this cylindrical piece from A20, making it the most promising interpretation for this piece. | [Input File: S820sE.j] |

description (summary) | 2008-8-17 | eE | a solid cast leaf-shaped arrowhead made of a copper alloy, possibly through the use of a stone mould. The piece is constructed with a diamond-shaped shaft that covers roughly 1/3 of the entire length. There is a gradual taper throughout the length of the shaft for ca. 3 cm. Following this point, the head of the piece emerges with a more pronounced taper, reaching a max width of 1.11 cm near the center of the head. From here, it tapers into its final point at the top of the weapon. Unlike piece J5q168.1, which follows nearly the same dimensions and strengthens the idea of a common mould, this arrowhead shows no evidence for a midrib along the center of the head. Typically, this component adds structural integrity to the piece, and perhaps as a result, this arrowhead is bent upward along the length of the head whereas the J5 piece has maintained the original form. | [Input File: S819sE2.j] |
