This layer presumably indicates that we are at the last phase of Mittani occupation, an abandonment of the area in which over time mud bricks were eroded, melted by rain, and re-baked by the sun. For the time being, f5, f14 will be left in place. By the end of the day we exposed this compact surface in all the loci (not fully) with a slope present towards the south. Tomorrow this ly should be completely exposed and photographs expected on S717. k 12 dy Excavated f6 today which is located in the eastern half of the locus and came down on f18, the same compact surface seen in k13 f7, k3 f17, and k2 f16. By the end of the day we defined this layer which slopes down in the south and possibly continues under f5. This morning, f11 was assigned to the stones in the north-east corner. A gap exists between the two clusters of stones but no difference noted between the soil inside this gap and the surrounding matrix. f 18 ds Compact bricky surface present in all four opened loci in A20 (k12, k13, k2, k3). The layer is solid and hard, presumably the abandonment layer of melted Mittani mud brick structures. dy Found this layer under f6 today, by the end of the day the feature was fully exposed in the eastern half of the locus showing a gradual sloping down to the south. k 13 dy this locus was not excavated today since we are trying to get down to the same compact surface in all four loci. k 2 dy Excavated 10-15 cms of f10 and found f16, compact layer at the end of the day in the northeast corner. f 10 dy Removed most of this feature today with ease since the soil is extremely soft, contrasting with the bricky compact layer, f16 below. f 16 dy At the end of the day, efforts were moved into k2 after finding the compact layer in the northwest corner of k3 suggesting that it continued into k2. The compact surface was found after scraping the area with the northeast corner defined. f 12 dy assigned this feature today, stone was relayed by eE, sE, and yM. The area around this stone was scraped along with the section to see if a cut or pit was visible to indicate a possible pit or grave but nothing was noted. k 3 dy Excavated the western half of the locus, removing f13 and came down to f17 compact layer.
