In k2 and k3, excavations were centered on removing the ashy accumulations spread throughout both these loci. k 3 dy Yesterday i11 jar was found within an interface between the ash f36 and bricky material f29 along with tannur fragments and small stones within ash however no floor surface was found. Today while excavating around the area where i11 was located, more cobble stones were found appearing similar to a floor surface along with a tannur. The pavement was assigned f43, the tannur f42. In the south, large fragments of bricks were found horizontally with soft ash surrounding it, still part of f29. The softer soil was removed, exposing the brick components which appear to divide the ash between the southeast and southwest quadrants of k3, perhaps a crude retaining wall. i 11 nr Removed the jar today after mKB looked at it. The jar while fragmented appears quite complete. After the jar was removed the area was scraped and cleaned revealing several cobblestones below, forming a pavement f43. This contextualizes the jar, associating it with a floor and tannur f29. f 43 dy Feature surfaced while removing the interface between ash and bricky material f29 in the northwest quadrant of k3. Several small cobblestones with pottery sherds lying flat were found sitting on the ash f36. The floor was followed towards the north which extends to the section. Tomorrow the westernmost area will be excavated, following the floor surface to see how far it extends. f 42 dy The base of a tannur, found while excavating f29, interface between bricky material and ash, f36. The base is complete with large fragments of the tannur resting on top of the base. The tannur appears to sit on the ash f36 with a cobblestone floor found immediately to the north. f 36 dy The ash is visible to the west of pavement f35 and unclear if the ash goes below the pavement or abuts it. Another pavement was found today, connecting the cobblestones found yesterday in f36 eastern corner to the western side of k3 and associating f42 tannur, and i11 to a surface sitting on the ash. k 2 dy Removed 5-10 cms of ash in the entire locus, focusing on leveling out the area and removing patches of compact bricky material. The large stone in the west section, f12 was finally removed today along with the pillar of soil holding it pedastooled. Some fragments of carbonized wood were found in the southern corner of the locus, collected as a specimen. -sg With the emergence of f42 tannur, i11 jar, f35 pavement, and f43 pavement in k3, the strategy has changed in k2. We initially discussed concentrating all our efforts in excavating k2 and k3 to link what is already known from A18 however k2 remains difficult to understand. Large amounts of soft gray ash is present throughout the entire locus with patches of compact bricky material in the eastern side of the locus. The new strategy is to focus on exposing k3, following what was exposed in the eastern half of k3 towards the west. Since f36 runs into the north section, we will then open up k13 south side to see if the ash continues. The north trench in k13 showed a thin ashy level but mostly brickfall, indicating that the same ash present in k3 does not extend into the northern half of the k13. Once the boundary of the ash is found, we will then proceed into k12 to find the ash border here. k 14 dy removed f33 sherd pavement, finding more large stones underneath but does not extend to the north baulk. 8 cms was removed east of f34 stones to better define the area and see it the stones continue to go down. Tomorrow we will continue to excavate in this area. k 15 dy Photographed the emerging bricks today then began to excavate the southeast corner to expose the brick faces. After 10cms was removed, nice brick faces were present showing a corner and two walls, one running east to west and the north to south. The accumulation bounded within the walls was assigned f39 and excavated another 10 cms. To the west, 3cms was removed to try to define the brick surfaces better. The area still remains unclear but more bricks are present, forming possibly another corner of a structure. f 39 dy removed 20 cms today of this accumulation bounded within walls, f39. At the end of the day, two grinding stones, a large ceramic sherd, and broken bricks were found and left in place for a photograph tomorrow. The accumulation is gray, grainy with small brick inclusions present. f 38 dy Assigned this feature today to the north set of bricks running east to west. The northern boundary of the wall remains unknown; currently the width of the wall is one brick wide. f 40 dy This feature was assigned to the cluster of emerging bricks in the western half of the locus. It is unclear if this is a wall or tomb.
