One end is slightly pointed and the other is flat. The diameter is consistent throughout. Near the flat end, there appears to be an unusual protrusion of excess metal. This area may have resulted from unusual oxidation patterns. Alternatively, it may have been the result of an explosion in a mould where the metal escaped the shape of the mould due to the heat or weakness in the mould, or a combination of the two. Viewed in this manner, this piece may have been part of a gating system vent used for casting a small piece in the lost-wax method. Closer inspection of similar occurrences may reveal more about this process and its prevalence at Mozan. .rd S816 .ri sE q 203.1 df gr wm li co dark gray cn broken w2 11.3 ht 5.3 ds fragment of a grinding stone, the original shape must have been circular but only one half is preserved. One side in convex, the other is concave and smoother; all the surfaces are rough and porous. The edges are rounded, except for the breakage line which is sharp. The surfaces are encrusted with soil; on the bottom there is a reddish spot that is possibly an encrustation of clay. .rd S816 .ri yM q 199.1 df shell wm shell ct sp co pale white cn broken lg 5.5 w1 3 ds five pieces of a shell, different in shape and size; some of them can be bond together. The shape is cylindrical, thinner in the middle than at the two extremities (slightly wider). Also the bottom is wider than the top, and its broken surface is concave and surrounded by a higher side. The top is flat, broken on one side, and must have been the bottom surface of the vessel. On the breakage surface is possible to see very clearly that the item inside is burnt and black. On the body of the piece some finger marks are visible, this indicates that the stand is hand-made. .rd S816 .ri sE q 196.1 df uk ct caf lg 7.8 ht 2.5 w1 5.7 wm cl cn broken co reddish gray ds very fragile piece of clay with a rectangular and curved shape. The piece is covered almost entirely with soil encrustation, beneath which is a thick layer of iron oxide. The consistency of the diameter makes it difficult to detect a taper or possible point to indicate a pin or needle. There is also the possibility that the piece was left over for a casting process. However, taking into account that it was found beneath topsoil, it can be compared to an iron piece from J7 topsoil (q 45.3), a dirk which preserves a rivet inserted through the tang of the blade in order to hold a wooden handle in place. The diameter of this rivet, 0.3 cm, matches well with this cylindrical piece from A20, making it the most promising interpretation for this piece. nm the length measurement of the piece assumes the piece was bent over time and was once straight. Therefore, the measurement follows the bend from one end to the other. i 17 df uk ct laf wm li co black cn broken lg 8.2 ht 0.7 w1 1.4 ds long and thin lithic artifact with a trapezoidal shape. One of the two larger sides is flat and covered by many soil encrustations; the opposite side is divided into two sections: one is rough and one is smooth with very thin horizontal and parallel lines incised. The item is broken at the two extremities, while the two sides are smooth and not broken: this means that the item was not larger than how it appears now. Possibly it is a polishing tool for small items, such as beads.
