.bk J01 .fl P904ms.j .fd daily journal P904 .ei ms .ed P904 .rd P904 .ri mS -wk since our work area is shrinking we moved some of our workmen to other areas. Juma moved to J3, and Majid, Samich, and Kowa moved to J2. Rashad did not come to work today. -wa we now start work at 5:45 because the sun is rising later each morning. We finish at 1:30pm. -dy continued going down in k111 north of wall f188 in order to find the bottom of this wall. We did find the bottom, f184, the unremarkable brown accumulation runs up to this wall. To the north we removed f190 which is an accumulation under the large stones of the buildup of this wall. We scraped and straightened the section of k10 left from MZ16 It is perfectly in line with the section in the entire eastern side of the excavated area in J1. We have finished most excavation and beginning tomorrow we can focus on the sounding in front of the wall, f72. The rest of the season will be an attempt to find the bottom of the wall. Currently the wall is 2.7 above excavated level which is 8825. vS began drawing the western section of k111 which will serve as the reverse section, or eastern section, of k108. -lb we have been calling the wall f72 which was one of the feature numbers given to this wall in MZ16. In reality we should have been calling this a3 because all the feature numbers were subsumed under this aggregate in that season. k 111 dy we planned to cease excavation here but did not see the bottom of the wall, f188. This was an important point so we removed another 15 cm and found the bottom of the wall. Since this is the column we flagged the q-lots. mKB analyzed the one from this morning's digging and found some Mitanni sherds. Therefore, this accumulation is Mitanni. This accumulation runs up to and under the wall so the wall may be 2nd mil. The accumulation on the other side is very different and we have presumed it to be 3rd mil, but have no sherds or other diagnostic items to prove this conclusively. We removed all the larger stones of f188 which definitely belong to a later maintenance of the wall. We have ceased excavation in this locus. f 188 ds we found the bottom of this wall both on the north and south sides. On the south, the accumulation f184 runs under it. mKB analyzed the sherds from the accumulation that runs up to the wall and found some Mitanni sherds. This accumulation runs up to and under the wall so the wall may be 2nd mil. The accumulation on the other side is very different and we have presumed it to be 3rd mil, but have no sherds or other diagnostic items to prove this conclusively. The material on the north side is very different, f192, a dense brown with lots of inclusions. The stones of the original wall have red material used as packing between the stones. This may be the same material used between the stones in the larger wall, f72. ar it is very apparent that the accumulations on the north and south sides of the wall, f188 are very different. The south is soft, brown accumulation at the base of the wall, and to the north is hard, dense bricky material. The southern part is similar to the accumulation found throughout the area and the sections show this. The accumulations found north of the wall are specific to this area and may represent a specific purpose for the wall. There is no evidence of a street or any other living or working area. The reason for keeping up the wall is unclear and it's original reason is unclear. We do believe there was an original building, possibly 3rd millenium, and a later maintenance of the wall when larger stones were added along the same lines. These larger stones sit on definitely 2nd millennium accumulation, f190. tc ab f184 tc ab f193 tc ab f192 k 10 dy we cut back and straightened the western portion of f189 the brown packing. This may be less a packing for the stones and more the same accumulation as f192 or f98 from MZ16. We assume this is 3rd mil, but really have no data except from the ph 1 date given to f98 in MZ16. Also straightened and scraped the MZ16 section. It is perfectly in line with the section in the entire eastern side of the excavated area in J1. k 110 dy removed the remainder of f190, the gray accumulation under the larger stones of f188. This accumulation abuts the wall f188 and sits on f193. Found the bottom of the wall f188 on this side. It seems to sit on the bekiyah surface, f193. This makes us think this may be a 3rd mil wall which was maintained later. This is not clear yet however. We are continuing the step and will cut back f192 and f193 to one meter west of the baulk and cut it all to the wall. Tomorrow we will begin going down in the accumulation in front of the wall, f72, also called a3, to see how far down the wall extends. f 181 tc co f184 f 171 tc co f181 f 163 tc co f191 f 187 tc cu f152 f 191 ds reddish brown accumulation which is the same as f184 in k106. This feature number was only in use one day. It was declared because it was different from f163 above, and then subsumed by f184 when the k111 was created using portions of k106 and k110. f 192 ds this feature is a dense brown accumulation which corresponds to f98 of MZ16. Then it was considered brick melt from above and might be more of an accumulation than a specific packing placed here for a building purpose. f 189 tc ab f72 f 182 ds this accumulation in k14 is seen only in section and is considered an interface between f179 and f183, both accumulations. tc co f183 f 179 tc co f182
