This accumulation, with various feature numbers, spreads across J1 in front of the wall and, as f184, is associated with the Mitanni wall a7 which we consider part of the lower accumulation against the wall, stratum 14. I11 very distinctive, decorated Mitanni pottery is found in this accumulation. I12 Based on our assumption that the wall a7 is the lower accumulation agains the wall, this associated accumulation is also part of the lower buildup. B12 v182 f 234 ds Soft brown accumulation which contains some pottery and stones. Natural, probably windborne. B12 v198 f 38 ds this feature originally dug in MZ16 and again in MZ18. Although this feature covers the wall, there are some q-lots assigned to it with much lower elevations such as q360 and q365. I10 this accumulation covers the wall f72 and therefore can be assigned to a stratum whent the wall was not visible, 10. This accumulation was equated with f171 and f163 which have been assigned to stratum 12 because in front of the wall similar sediments exist below the top of the wall and thererfore are earlier. The sediment is horizontal and does not show any slope from the terrace. I12 It may be that we missed a severe slope when orginally excavating but this is highly unlikely since all the sections show strictly horizontal depostion. ;B12 v76 f 163 I10 this layer is the interface between stratum 10, abandonment, and the upper levels of accumulation against the wall and we are assigning it to stratum 12. This area is so widespread and, although the sediments and accumulations are extremely horizontal, there is a slope to the tell and the elevations for this feature, and the equivalent features from MZ18, fluctuate almost 50cm between 8975 and 9025. The transitions from layer to layer are uniform through the area in front of the wall, f72. I11 the pottery recovered from this feature is Mitanni. I12 this accumulation is natural sedimentation and impossible to place with certainty but it does begin below the top of the wall so part of the wall is still visible during placement. f 171 I10 this layer is the interface between stratum 10, abandonment, and the upper levels of accumulation against the wall and we are assigning it to stratum 12. I12 the elevation puts it in an earlier phase and stratum than abandonment which was when the stones were only visible at the top of the wall. f 166 B12 v83 I10 this accumulation is extremely similar to f184 and the other soft brown accumulations found throughout J1 at this elevation and are dated to stratum 14. I12 this feature was limited to a small area and we did not notice a direct connection with f184 although it is in the same vicinity near the stones. f 169 B12 v86 ds This stone may be related to the wall a7 and the bench a6. I10 this stone most likely belongs to the Mitanni addition or reworking of the wall which we are attributing to stratum 14. The elevation is in line with the Mitanni wall a7. I12 if our understanding of this Mitanni activity changes, there is the chance this designation will change as well. f 170 B12 v86 ds This stone may be related to the wall a7 and the bench a6. It is at the correct elevation and rests on the soft brown accumulation which is associated with this phase. I12 there is a possibility this stone was moved after placement and therefore belongs to a later stratum. tc re f184 f 231 B12 v184 I10 This soft brown accumulation is above the pebble surface f232 which we believe is Mitanni. It is very similar to the other brown accumulations throughout J1. At this elevation, f231 is below the Mitanni wall a7 but still respects the east west orientation this wall and the other stones represent. I11 The pottery is Mitanni. f 232 ds after further pottery analysis mKB has determined that there is Mitanni pottery on this surface and it can therefore be dated to early Mitanni. We are calling it early because of it's elevation and also because there are a large number of Khabur sherds which have been much less common at higher elevations. We don't believe there is any break between Khabur and Mitanni in this locale. I10 this surface is the first horizontal surface above the escarpment which slopes down to the south and west. We originally thought this was Khabur because there are several Khabur sherds in place but pottery analysis shows it is still Mitanni, but likely very early. This belongs to the first level of accumulation against the wall. I11 Mitanni pottery mixed with Khabur indicates an early Mitanni. I12 This designation is preliminary, but very likely at this point. tc co f239 tc co f235 tc co f240 f 114 I10 this accumulation excavated in MZ16 is the same as f195 and f241 and seems to be the first accumulation against the wall above the escarpment, but it does seem to slope down with the escarpment. At this point it is unclear whether it is part of the packing or a later accumulation. We are assigning this to the earlier stratum because initial study of the pottery indicates very early although we don't have a large sample. =f195, f241 I11 associated pottery seems to be late Chalcolithic. Assigned to this stratum primarily because of elevation and dating of associated features. B12 v105 f 190 I10 sandy gray nondescript accumulation which is probably a fluvial deposition but dated to stratum 14 primarily because the Mitanni wall a7 overlays it. B12 v106 f 193 I10 this small accumulation is north of a7. This area is unclear at the moment but it seems to rest on f192 which has been called bekiah and associated with the building of the escarpment of the wall and would be phase 1. I12 As more of this area is excavated in MZ20, this designation may change to later. B12 v107 f 192 I10 this packing is thought to be laid down at the time of the wall construction and is assigned to phase 1. B12 v190 f 235 I10 this accumulation is below the Khabur/Mitanni pebble surface of f232 and may be the transition point between Khabur and Mitanni. The the pebble surface is horizontal but the surface below is sloping. This accumulation is windborne and has shows no stratigraphy in section so dating will be totally typological. I11 the pottery has not been studied thoroughly yet from this feature but may still have Mitanni so we are assigning it to stratum 14. I12 This assignment may change based on more thorough pottery analysis. B12 v213 tc co 237 f 237 I10 this accumulation is below the accumulation directly below the Khabur/Mitanni pebble surface of f232 and was only declared to keep the features a manageable size at this point. B12 v212 f 239 B12 v210 I10 this feature is currently not well understood and may either be a later additon to the escarpment or original since it directly covers f241 which covers the escarpment. f240 seems to be later so we can assign this to stratum 30 or stratum 70. I11 the pottery has not been analyzed yet. I12 this is a very preliminary assignment and may change with further excavation and pottery analysis.
