It's the continuation of k121 so we will assign the same features as in 121. we started removing f233 then we reached f231. -dy today we resumed working in locus k121 removing f233, 231 and 235 then we stopped there as in k120, because we need to make the features in different locus at the same level. Two pickmen were working in k121, and the third pickman was digging at the same time k122, which is the continuation of the features in k121. So we removed f233 for today and we reached feature 231 which will be removed tomorrow. -wk Nazem the shovelman had permission to leave after breakfast. -sy today we removed marker number m4684. -sg gB suggested not to draw the east section, because it will take too long to finih it. And he also said to place a string on the section with ribbon every one meter, so we know the exact measurment for when we draw it in freehand. -wk as gB gB suggested, today put Shewals on the top of the south section as in the east one, to protect from any thing to full down. .rd S728 .ri rE k 124 dy today we finished removing f235 and f237 which is under f235. Under f237 we found f257 which is sandy compacted texture, consist of few shardes of pottery, bones and very small pebbles, and it's located in the north part of k124. So we took a picture for it, and tomorrow morning we are going to remove it to uncover f238 which covers the whole area, then take a good picture. F257 is maybe assigned from last season but we are not sure now about its number. k 120 dy Today also we finished removing f237 which has line of lamination at the bottom which shows clear in the section, and we uncovered f238 which is the nice pavement floor covering the area, and slooping to the SW very sharply. This feature consists of many shardes of pottery laying in a flat way, ranging from small size to the large size, many pebbles also small and large size, and few fragments of bones. Then we cleaned it to be ready for the picture tomorrow morning. -sg tomorrow we are going to remove f257, then we will take a picture to f238 which covers the whole area. after that we will move to k123 and the small baulk next to it, to remove f232 and the accumulation under it f235, then f237 to reach f238. But gB refers to the reddish accumulation under f237 in k123 and the baulk, that it's more similar to the Bakaya material that we found it in J3, so when we reach it make sure that it's Bakaya not a brick. .rd S730 .ri rE k 125 dy is the north step in the west section, we started excavating it by removing f250 which is assigned from last season and it's pavement constituted by sherds, pebbles and bones, and it looks the same as f232. f250 covers f235, then under f235 we found the continuation of f238 which is the same as f240. k 123 dy we removed f232 which we left it until we uncover f238 to take a picture to the two pavement which are belonging to two different time period. then we removed f235 under it, then under it f237 which we removed too to reach f238. -sg in order to get a general idea of the depth of the pavement floor f238, gB suggested to take the elevation of the bottom of the slope of f238 and the top of the escarpment. -sy today we removed m4679. f 250 ar after excavating f250 we found out that it's the same as f232 but because of the slooping at the beginning it was not clear. In fact f250 covers f240 which is the same as f238. .rd S731 .ri rE -dy We resumed removing f237 from k123 and from k125. We uncovered f238 in the whole area. Then we spent the rest of day cleaning the area to be ready for the picture. -sg fAB suggested to remove the stones and to check if they are sitting on f238, and to take some close up shots of the floor to show the pottery. Then to remove the floor in a grid pattern for control areas. .rd S802 .ri rE k 126 dy k126 is the south part of of the baulk in J1. k 127 dy The north part of the baulk in J1. -dy We assigned a two new loci, k126, k127 because the area has changed, f238 covers the entire area. We started the day by taking a picture of the two new loci, the floor, and the stones on the floor. We removed six stones, f255, f256, f258, i44, i45, and i46. We took several pictures of the area before removing the stones and after also for the grid of the section we made. We then divided the area into seven sections with string and we gave each section different q lots. f 244 ar f244 was left bare for a season causing damage to it so we do not know if f244 is the same as f239. We removed a portion of f244 but still we can not tell. -sg We will continue to remove f238 and f240 which is the same as f238. .rd S803 .ri rE f 241 C30 this is a compact ash accumulation covers f196, and it's the same as f195. .rd S803 .ri rE -dy We continued removing f238 and uncover f265 which goes underneath f238, and looks like a glacis sloping to the south. But f265 does not continue all the way east, because we found in the south east of f265 a big pit fill, we gave it a new feature number f264, which is mud lamination, has ash dots, but has no pottery sherds or stones, and with a brown color, has some pieces of baqaya. We assigned f259 for the line of stones going north to south in k127 which is the first time in this area we have found this direction, normaly we find them east to west. Today we took 10 bags of dirt from f238 to analyze as fAB suggested, which is important for the Zooarchaeology and paleo-botany. -sy Today we placed five markers in our area. m4898 in the wall, m4897 in the west section, m4895 and m4896 in the south section and m4894 in the east section. f 239 ar f240 is the same as f238 and they both overlay f239. f239 and f189 are the same feature because they consist of the same material and they cover the same ash feature f241 and 195. While removing f240 we found a step on f239 and gB suggested that this step is because they put a line of stones on the feature to separate between the wall and the area behind. f 240 ar Part of this feature was excavated in MZ19, f240 is the same as f238 and they both overlay f239. f 238 ar f240 is the same as f238 and they both overlay f239. .rd S804 .ri rE -dy Today we started the day by taking a picture of the area showing f239 sloping south and f261 and the step in f239. After removing f238 we found f262 which is mud with a dark color, it has ash dots in it and is in the south west corner in k126. We found a circle of baqaya in the sloping of f239, we gave the baqaya a new feature number f263. k 127 dy Yesterday we left a portion of f240 and today we took a picture of it to show how it overlays f239. f 244 ar after removing f238 which covers f244, we found out that f244 is the same as f239. .rd S805 .ri rE -dy Today we continued removing f262 which was sloping very sharply to the south west, the pottery in this feature changed, we don't see any khabur shardes. Then we reached f265 under f262. f265 is a hard feature extremely compact sloping very sharply south west. While removing f262 we found a hearth f266, and we assigned the fill the new feature number f267. In addition, we found more baqaya pieces next to f263, which is also baqaya. They look like being underneath f265. We are still removing f264. .rd S806 .ri rE k 126 dy today we removed f264, which is the mud lamination under f243. Under f264 we found f268, which is pavement floor, contains very small pubbles and different sizes of sherds. While removing f264 we found f269, which is piece of baqaya material. k 127 dy today we removed part of f239, we tried to follow the slope of the ash below under it. Then we didn't continue removing f239 because we wanted to check if it's continuing south under f265. So we decided to remove f265 first. -sg regarding to the hard situation we have, that we have hard materials against hard materials and also because of the slope of the features, it's difficult to know which feature is under the other. Thus gB and fAB suggested not to excavate tomorrow, just to work at home to have a better understanding of the area and the features, since it's so important for the chronology not to mix the features. In addition gB suggested to make a good plan and section to the area, showing the strata sequence. .rd S809 .ri rE -dy Today we had meeting in the tell before breakfast, we decided to make a small trench to check if f265 goes under f239 or above it. k 126 dy today we made a small trench to check if f265 goes under f239 or above it. Then we found out that f239 overlays a small part of f265. We started removing f263 the baqaya piece. .rd S810 .ri rE k 126 dy Today we continued removing f265, which is a thin hard floor sloping sharply south west. k 127 dy Today we assigned a new feature number f272. We started removing it to uncover f239, which under f272. f 272 ar This feature overlays f239. First we thought that f272 was part of f239, but after removing small part of f272, we found out that f272 is harder then f239 and has more sherds and also pebbles. .rd S812 .ri rE -dy Today we had a meeting with the staff. gB explained to us how to properly maintain the UGR, keep tracking on files, and to do the summary. As far as J1 is concerned, gB mentioned to all that the escarpment f239 is earlier then we thought. On the basis of mKB analysis of the sherds, the escarpment is infact to be dated to phase one. gB suggested that the escarpment f239 it maybe identified with the Akkadian word kissû, which is attested from the OB period, and probably is a loan word from Sumerian ki-sá. Then mKB explained the chronology of J1 features, by giving an overview of the statistics of the sherds in the most representative features. She clarified the depositions of Mittani features resting directly on phase one, and the lack of massive Khabur features. -sg gB suggested to go down and break phase one to reach the earlier escarpment f196.
