Assemblages within the J2 book were put together based on stratigraphic, typological, and functional groupings.
Initial assemblages were created during the excavations as a way to help understand the stratigraphy and typology of the ceramics. They have been reviewed for the digital J2 unit book. Some are grouped solely by feature. Assemblages were not intended to be comprehensive and the full ceramic catalogs can be found in the ceramics book in the Shapes by Horizon section.
Some strata contain ceramics from earlier periods. For example, the existence of earlier ceramics in some of the ED III contexts here is not surprising in that the Temple Terrace had already been built by LC3 and probably existed earlier, in LC 2 (see Kelly-Buccellati 2010). For instance, hammer-rim bowls are typical of the LC 3 contexts on the temple terrace but are still found in ED I contexts. The same is true for so-called casseroles.
All references to strata and horizons are based on the J2 sequence.
