Those ceramics are mixed from Ninevite V through Mittani periods. Items ubiquitous, but there are several figurine fragments, stone tool fragments, and a tannur (f3) that indicate at least a short period of formal occupation. Soil under topsoil would normally be assigned to stratum s30-J3B. However due to its depth it spans several intermediate strata and is therefore assigned s60-J3B. 3 s60-J3D Tannur that sits in natural accumulation f2. The tannur provides strong evidence that an extended period of temporary occupation occurred at this location after Mittani period abandonment. 4 s60-J3D Compacted soil surface that sits in natural accumulation f2. No ceramics or items recovered. Seems to surround the top of tannur f3. It is possible that the tannur was constructed as part of a pit, but this is unlikely as most are constructed above ground level. 5 s60-J3D Displaced stone that sits in f2. Accumulation tentatively dated to period of unorganized occupations. 6 s60-J3D Displaced stone that sits in f2. Accumulation tentatively dated to period of unorganized occupations. 7 s20-J3B Topsoil on tell surface 8 s30-J3B Layer of natural accumulation under topsoil f7. Ceramics not fully analyzed. Obsidian blade is ubuquitous. 9 s50-J3B Layer of natural accumulation beneath accumulation f8. Ceramics not fully analyzed. Items included a number of stone tool fragments as well as stone mace fragment. The typology gave no indication of the periods of manufacture. 10 s144-J3B Western end of the middle Mittani stone apron built on accumulation atop the EDIII glacis. This stonework is an extension to the west of stone apron f532. Ceramics in covering accumulations can be used to date abandonment but not construction This stratum assignment was an interpolation of more secure assignments to abutting apron feature f556 to the east. We did not remove any of the aprons to expose their foundations. We presume that the aprons were swept clean as long as they were in use, so the overlaying accumulations can at best be used to date the abandonment of the aprons. Apron f556 was tentatively dated to stratum s148a by excavating material in a gap between it and the revetment wall. Because the stonework of f532 and f10 is more crude, we assume they were built somewhat later when construction resources were not as plentiful. 11 s650d-J3D Revetment wall component to the temple mound securely dated by excavations of it in J1 and J5 to the Early Dynastic III period. A portion of the back of this wall was exposed in the excavation of probes k104 and k105. Most of the ceramics were Late Chalcolithic reflecting the fact that the wall was set into a glacis from that earlier period and that the material from the cuts was used to fill the back of the free-standing revetment wall structure. 12 s122b-J3B A cluster of small stones that sits in natural accumulation f13. 13 s122b-J3B Deep layer of natural accumulation to the south of revetment wall, f11 lying under natural accumulation f9. Ceramics not fully analyzed. Items included stone tools and spindle whorls. Although we can't date this material to a particular period, it is evidence that the area was in active use when the soil was being deposited. Originally this feature was assigned to a higher post-abandonment stratum, s80-J3B. It was one of the first features excavated to the south of the revetment wall, f11. Subsequent excavations to the east in k1 and k107 revealed that buildup in front of the revetment occurred in the later stages of the Mittani period. Since the elevations match those of f552 and f573, we revised the assignment to s122b-J3B, matching f573. 14 s122b-J3B Displaced stone that sits in f13. Accumulation tentatively dated to the late Mittani period. 15 s122b-J3B Displaced stone that sits in f13. Accumulation tentatively dated to the late Mittani period. 16 s122b-J3B Displaced stone that sits in f13. Accumulation tentatively dated to the late Mittani period. 17 s122b-J3B Displaced stone that sits in f13. Accumulation tentatively dated to the late Mittani period. 18 s122b-J3B Displaced stone that sits in f13. Accumulation tentatively dated to the late Mittani period. 19 s122b-J3B Displaced stone that sits in f13. Accumulation tentatively dated to the late Mittani period. 20 s60-J3B Displaced stone that sits in f2. Accumulation tentatively dated to period of unorganized occupations. 21 s60-J3B Displaced stone that sits in f2. Accumulation tentatively dated to period of unorganized occupations. 22 s60-J3B Displaced stone that sits in f2. Accumulation tentatively dated to period of unorganized occupations. 23 s60-J3B Displaced stone that sits in f2. Accumulation tentatively dated to period of unorganized occupations. 24 s60-J3B Displaced stone that sits in f2. Accumulation tentatively dated to period of unorganized occupations. 25 s60-J3B Displaced stone that sits in f2. Accumulation tentatively dated to period of unorganized occupations. 26 s50-J3B Displaced stone that sits in f9. Accumulation tentatively dated to period of late abandonment. 27 s50-J3B Displaced stone that sits in f9. Accumulation tentatively dated to period of late abandonment. 28 s122b-J3B Soil amidst a cluster of large stones. Ceramics have not been fully analyzed. Stratum assignment based on its relative position south of and below the top of revetment wall f11. Surrounding accumulations and features date to the late Mittani period. 29 s122b-J3B Displaced stone that sits in f13. Accumulation tentatively dated to the late Mittani period. 30 s122c-J3B Natural accumulation below accumulation f13. Ceramics have not been fully analyzed. Most items are stone tools, although not specifically datable indicate significant occupation activity. Stratum assignment based on its relative position south of and below the top of revetment wall f11. Surrounding accumulations and features date to the late Mittani period. 31 s122b-J3B Natural accumulation below accumulation f37 and abutting apron f10. Ceramics dated to the Late Chalcolithic period. Items include seal impression and stone tools. Based on the ceramics and items this feature should be in an LC3 stratum. However, it sits above later EDIII strata (glacis) and is built up to the north of a middle Mittani apron that it abuts. The best explanation is that this accumulation was deposited by run-off from deteriorating LC3 structures higher on the temple mound that were preserved rather than remodeled in the time between LC3 and Mittani occupations. 32 s650a-J3B Layer of baqaya that abuts the north face of revetment wall f11. No ceramics or items recovered. This feature is not well documented in the record. The description of where it was found is vague and its coordinates were not measured. The template for v36 does not show it, but the best photo is a subview which seems to show a surface that meets the top of the revetment wall. Therefore we conclude that this feature is equivalent to the EDIII glacis and s650a-J3B is appropriate. 33 s160a-J3B Laminar accumulation below accumulation f31. Ceramics have not been fully analyzed but shapes seem to be LC. Items are ubiquitous stone tools. The stones of apron f10 were laid directly on these laminations which predate the construction. The laminations bespeak an extended period of wind blown soil exposed to precipitation followed by drying. It is not possible to precisely date the deposition, which happened sometime after the glacis f50 was constructed in EDIII and the middle Mittani period of the apron. As in accumulation f31, we assume the LC3 material comes from deteriorated structures higher on the mound. 34 s160b-J3B Hard accumulation below accumulation f34. Some ceramics date to the LCIII period. Items include a geometric seal impression that may be Uruk. What we can say is that this feature was deposited before accumulation f33 and after accumulation f38, all of which lay above the EDIII glacis f50 and below the apron f10. As in accumulation f31, we assume the LC3 material comes from deteriorated structures higher on the mound. Therefore a middle Mittani stratum is appropriate. 35 s144-J3B Northernmost stone of what may be the west terminus of the second apron f10 Along with isolated stones f36 and f55, and stone installation f72, these may be the extant components of the damaged far western edge of construction related to the second apron f10. The stones roughly rest on the same early Mittani accumulations as and fall within the north and south boundaries of the apron. 36 s144-J3B Isolated stone that sits in accumulation f31. Along with isolated stones f35 and f55, and stone installation f72 these may be the extant components of the damaged far western edge of construction related to the second apron f10. The stones roughly rest on the same early Mittani accumulations as and fall within the north and south boundaries of the apron. 37 s122a-J3B Natural accumulation between accumulations f2 on the top and f31 on the bottom. This accumulation was seen only in section and is the upper half of what was originally designated f31. It is the highest accumulation which abuts but does not cover apron f10. 38 s160c-J3B Natural accumulation below accumulation f34. Ceramics analysis showed mixed phases from LC3 to Khabur. What we can say is that this feature was deposited before accumulation f34 and after accumulation f42, all of which lay above the EDIII glacis f50 and below the apron f10. As in accumulation f31, we assume the LC3 material comes from deteriorated structures higher on the mound. Therefore a middle Mittani stratum is appropriate. 39 s122c-J3B Amalgamation of large stones and soil that sit in accumulation, f30. Some components were assigned separate feature numbers. Although this mass of stones to the south of the revetment wall, f11, originally gave the appearance of purposeful placemant as a buttress, later analysis showed that they were naturally deposited, perhaps as a result of the collapse of part of apron, f10, to the north while Mittani still occupied the tell. The stratum of accumulation, f30, in which they sit is appropriate for the stones and soil. Unlike the first analysis which assigned this depoition to post-abandonment, we can now be confident that they were deposited in the late Mittani period. 40 s122c-J3B Single large stone which abuts stone mass f39 and sits in accumulation f30. Although the mass of stones to the south of the revetment wall f11 originally gave the appearance of purposeful placement as a buttress, later analysis showed that they were naturally deposited, perhaps as a result of the collapse of part of apron f10 to the north while Mittani still occupied the tell. The stratum of accumulation f30 in which f40 sits is appropriate. Unlike the first analysis which assigned this deposition to post-abandonment, we can now be confident that they were deposited in the late Mittani period. 41 s60-J3B Displaced stone that sits in f2. Accumulation tentatively dated to period of unorganized occupations. 42 s180-J3B Natural accumulation below accumulation f30 and above the EDIII glacis f50. No ceramics or items recovered. What we can say is that this feature was deposited on the surface of the baqaya glacis f50 before accumulation f38. We speculate that the EDIII glacis was kept clean for several successive periods of occupation, which accounts for the general lack of ceramics and items in this covering accumulation. Since we know that general preservation of the EDIII temple mound structures began to lag in the Mittani period, we assign an early Mittani stratum to this feature. 43 s122d-J3B Natural accumulation below accumulation f30. No ceramics or items recovered. This accumulation was not excavated as it was the lowest level excavated directly south of the revetment wall f11 which it abutted. Equivalent late Mittani accumulations are to be found in adjacent loci to the east. 44 s122a-J3B Displaced stone that sits in accumulation f37. Dated by the late Mittani accumulation f37 in which it sits. 45 s122a-J3B Displaced stone that sits in accumulation f37. Dated by the late Mittani accumulation f37 in which it sits. 46 s122a-J3B Displaced stone that sits in accumulation f37. Dated by the late Mittani accumulation f37 in which it sits. 47 s122c-J3B Soil matrix that binds the components of stone installation f39. Mittani cup found within the soil. Items also included stone tools and metal slag. Dated by the late Mittani accumulation f30 in which it sits and confirmed by the cup, i4. 48 s122c-J3B One of the large stones that comprise stone installation f39. Dated by the late Mittani accumulation f30 in which it sits. 49 s122c-J3B Accumulation equal to accumulation f30 in the vicinity of stone installation f39. Ceramics not fully analyzed. Items included stone tools, clay beads and shell artifacts. Although not datable to a particular period, they do evidence occupational activities. Dated by the late Mittani accumulation f30 in which it sits. 50 s650a-J3B Baqaya layer sloping down from north to south that forms the glacis that meets the top of the EDIII revetment wall. Only a small segment of this feature was excavated, yielding a small number of sherds which have not been fully analyzed. This impervious layer of baqaya formed the surface of the temple mound above (north) of the revetment wall. It served both as a decoration and as a protective surface to direct precipitation water over the wall top, thus preventing erosion and weakening of the stone structure. It must have been an integral part of the EDIII remodeling of the temple mound. 51 s148b-J3B Mixture of soil and baqaya serving as a mortar to bind the capstones fx to the EDIII revetment wall top. 52 s20-J3B Topsoil on tell surface 53 s30-J3B Layer of accumulation directly under topsoil f52. Ceramics not fully analyzed. Items included a modern clay pipe and an obsidian fragment. First soil layer below thin layer of topsoil. 54 s30-J3B Two aligned stones that sit in accumulation f53. Dated by the late Mittani accumulation f53 in which it sits. 55 s144-J3B Isolated stone that sits in accumulation f33. Along with stones f35 and f36, and stone installation f72 these may be the extant components of the damaged far western edge of construction related to the second apron f10. The stones roughly rest on the same early Mittani accumulations as and fall within the north and south boundaries of the apron. 56 s122c-J3B Laminar accumulation below accumulation f53. Ceramics informally analyzed as Mittani shapes, but not fully evaluated. Items were ubiquitous. Stratum assignment based on its relative position south of and below the top of revetment wall f11. 57 s650b-J3B Late Chalcolithic fill used to construct the raised EDIII glacis f50 that protected the EDIII revetment wall f11. Ceramics were Late Chalcolithic. Items included a stone pendant. This fill lays between the LC3 baqaya glacis f58 and the EDIII baqaya glacis f50. Its purpose was to raise the level of the surface of the temple mound to meet the top of the EDIII revetment wall f11. 58 s860a-J3B Baqaya layer sloping down from north to south that forms a glacis for the temple mound. It lays below fill f57 and above fill f59. Almost certainly the continuation to the south of LC3 glacis f368. 59 s860b-J3B Fill beneath LC3 glacis f58. Limited number of body sherds from this fill, but those identifiable are Late Chalcolithic. Almost certainly the continuation to the south of LC3 fill f352. 60 s860b-J3B Human burial that sits in fill f59. 61 s860b-J3B Animal burial that sits in fill f59. Near to and probably associated with human burial f60. 62 s860b-J3B Stack of bricks that sits in fill f59. Near to and possibly associated with human burial f60. 63 s144-J3B Natural accumulation below laminar accumulation f56. Ceramics were not fully analyzed. Items (shell beads, figurines, charcoal, and stone tools) are consistent with sustained occupation. Top elevation roughly equivalent to f43 but f63 continues much deeper; therefore, middle Mittani phase is appropriate. 64 s860c-J3B Ashy fill beneath LC3 fill f59 and covering soil fill f65. Ceramics not fully analyzed. A seed and stone tool were the only items recovered. Only the top was exposed. The rest was only partially excavated and seen mostly in section, therefore strata assignment is tentative. 65 s860c-J3B Soil fill beneath LC3 fill f59 and overlaying soil fill f64. No ceramics or items recovered. Only the top was exposed. The rest was seen in section, therefore strata assignment is tentative. 66 s148b-J3B One of three limestone blocks that cap revetment wall f11. They were most probably added as part of the middle Mittani period westward expansion. 67 s148b-J3B One of three limestone blocks that cap revetment wall f11. They were most probably added as part of the middle Mittani period westward expansion. 68 s148b-J3B One of three limestone blocks that cap revetment wall f11. They were most probably added as part of the middle Mittani period westward expansion. 69 s650c-J3B One of the many layers of fill that were placed behind the EDIII revetment wall f11 during its construction. Ceramics have not been fully analyzed. 70 s650c-J3B One of the many layers of fill that were placed behind the EDIII revetment wall f11 during its construction. Ceramics have not been fully analyzed. 71 s650c-J3B One of the many layers of fill that were placed behind the EDIII revetment wall f11 during its construction. Ceramics are Late Chalcolithic. 72 s144-J3B A line of seven limestone blocks that sit in f33. Although physically separated from it they may mark the western edge of the second apron f10 Along with stones f35, f36 and f56 these may be the extant components of the damaged far western edge of construction related to the second apron f10. The stones roughly rest on the same early Mittani accumulations as and fall within the north and south boundaries of the second apron. 73 s650c-J3B One of the many layers of fill that were placed behind the EDIII revetment wall f11 during its construction. 74 s650c-J3B One of the many layers of fill that were placed behind the EDIII revetment wall f11 during its construction. Ceramics have not been fully analyzed. Items are ubiquitous obsidian tools and a figurine. 75 s144-J3B Stone installation that sits in natural accumulation f63. Accumulation f63 tentatively dated to the Middle Mittani period. 76 s160c-J3B Pavement-like layer that is covered by accumulation f81. Ceramics not fully analyzed. Items included ubiquitous figurines, stone tools, and a seal impression. The iconography has not been analyzed. 77 s160c-J3B Displaced stone that sits in accumulation f76. Accumulation f63 tentatively dated to the Middle Mittani period by its depth in relation to more securely dated accumulations. 78 s160c-J3B Stone block that sits in accumulation f38. Accumulation f38 tentatively dated to the Middle Mittani period by its position between the proposed second apron western extension and the EDIII glacis. 79 s160c-J3B Stone block that sits in accumulation f38. Accumulation f38 tentatively dated to the Middle Mittani period by its position between the proposed second apron western extension and the EDIII glacis. 80 s650d-J3D Baqaya plaster vertical surface bonded to the EDIII revetment wall f11. This plaster, bonded to the north face of the revetment wall, f11, stones was clearly used in its construction 81 s160b-J3B Layer of accumulation below accumulation 56 and above accumulation f82. No ceramics or items recovered. Feature seen only in section after excavation was complete, so strata assignment is relative to dated accumulation f56 above and pavement f76 below. 82 s160b-J3B Layer of accumulation below accumulation 81 and above pavement f76. No ceramics or items recovered. Feature seen only in section after excavation was complete, so strata assignment is relative to dated accumulation f56 above and pavement f76 below. 83 s160a-J3B Layer of baqaya under accumulation f33 to the west of the possible west terminus f72 of apron f10. No ceramics or items recovered because this feature was only seen in section after excavation. This layer which generally followed the slope of the tell appeared only in section. It is tentatively dated by its relationship to middle Mittani accumulation f33. 84 s160a-J3B A single course of horizontal bricks under accumulation f33 to the west of the possible west terminus f72 of apron f10. No ceramics or items recovered because this feature was only seen in section after excavation. These bricks lay to the south of and abutted f83. They are seen only in section. They are tentatively dated by the relationship to middle Mittani accumulation f33. 85 s122c-J3B Large stone that was a constituent of stone cluster f39. Stratum assignment based on the fact that cluster f39 sits in accumulation f30. 86 s122b-J3B Accumulation under accumulation f13 and atop accumulation f87. No ceramics or items recovered because this feature was only seen in section after excavation. When the east section of k101 was cleaned for photography and drawing it could be seen that f13 should be sub-divided into three parts. From top to bottom they are f13, f96, and f87. All are assigned to the same stratum, s122b. 87 s122b-J3B Accumulation under accumulation f86 and atop accumulation f30. 88 s122b-J3B Wedge of soil that abuts revetment wall f11 and sits in f86. No ceramics or items recovered because this feature was only seen in section after excavation. 89 s650c-J3B Bands of fill that sit in fill f331 that formed the foundation for baqaya glacis f50. No ceramics or items recovered because this feature was only seen in section after excavation. This back-fill was deposited as the last step in constructing the glacis that protected the EDIII revetment wall. 90 s180-J3B Natural accumulation below accumulation f38. The first accumulation atop EDIII glacis f50. Equal to accumulation f42. No ceramics or items recovered because this feature was only seen in section after excavation. 91 s122c-J3B Large stone that was a constituent of stone cluster f39. Stratum assignment based on the fact that cluster f39 sits in accumulation f30. 92 s650c-J3B Fill beneath fill f311. One of the many layers of fill that were placed behind the EDIII revetment wall f11 during its construction. 96 s650c-J3B Fill beneath fill f92 and atop fill f71. No ceramics or items recovered because this feature was only seen in section after excavation. One of the many layers of fill that were placed behind the EDIII revetment wall f11 during its construction. 97 s20-J3B Topsoil on tell surface. 98 s50-J3B Natural accumulation below accumulation f129. Ceramics were mixed from Middle Assyrian to Ninevite 5. First layer excavated as part of J3. (Topsoil and first accumulation under it were excavated as J2 features now renamed f125 and f129 respectively.) 99 s50-J3B Displaced stone that sits in accumulation f98. Dated by the post-abandonment accumulation f98 in which it sits. 100 s30-J3B Layer of accumulation beneath topsoil f97. Ceramics were mixed from Middle Assyrian to Khabur. Items were stone tool fragments. First soil layer below thin layer of topsoil. 101 s30-J3B Lens of pebbles that sits in accumulation f100. One obsidian fragment recovered. Dated by the accumulation in which it sits. 102 s50-J3B Displaced stone that sits in accumulation f98. Dated by the accumulation in which it sits. 103 s80-J3B Natural accumulation below accumulation f98. Ceramics analysis showed mixed phases including Middle Assyrian, Mittani, Khabur, and Ninevite V. Items were stone tools. The mixed ceramics and ubiquitous items are exactly what one would expect from an abandonment accumulation. 104 s50-J3B Natural accumulation below accumulation f100. Ceramics were not fully analyzed. The sole item was a stone tool fragment. Dated primarily by its relative position in the stratigraphic column. 105 s20-J3B Topsoil on tell surface. 106 s30-J3B Layer of accumulation below topsoil f105. Ceramics analysis showed mixed phases from EDIII to Middle Assyrian. First soil layer below thin layer of topsoil. 107 s60-J3B Natural accumulation below accumulation f104. Ceramics were not fully analyzed. Dated primarily by its relative position in the stratigraphic column. 108 s50-J3B Natural accumulation below accumulation f106. Ceramics were not fully analyzed. Dated primarily by its relative position in the stratigraphic column. 109 s650a-J3B Baqaya layer sloping down from north to south that forms the glacis that meets the top of the EDIII revetment wall. It is the northward extension of f50. 110 s60-J3B Displaced stone that sits in accumulation f107. Stratum assignment based on the accumulation in which it sits. 111 s180-J3B First layer of accumulation (lens) deposited on the EDIII glacis f109. No ceramics or items recovered. What we can say is that this feature was deposited on the surface of the baqaya glacis f109 before accumulation f116. 112 s60-J3B Large stone that was a constituent of aggregate a7. This group of stones were arranged in the shape of an L, most likely to protect a post-Mittani abandonment temporary settlement that includes a tannur, f3. 113 s60-J3B Natural accumulation under accumulation f108. Ceramics were not fully analyzed. Dated primarily by its relative position in the stratigraphic column. 114 s160b-J3B Natural accumulation below accumulation f107 and above natural accumulation f121. Ceramics were mixed from primarily Late Chalcolithic to a few later ones including Ninevite V and Middle Assyrian. Lone item was a shell fragment. This accumulation was the highest (latest) whose deposition followed the slope of the EDIII glacis f109. Its relative position to other accumulations is similar to accumulations that cover the EDIII glacis f50 in the adjacent locus to the south. The presence of LC3 ceramics can be possibly explained by runoff from LC structures higher on the temple mound. 115 s80-J3B Displaced stone that sits in accumulation f118. Stratum assignment based on the accumulation in which it sits. 116 s180-J3B Several layers of natural accumulation that rest on the EDIII glacis f109 that were not immediately excavated so that aggregate a7 above it could be photographed. Ceramics have not been fully analyzed. Soil in this feature consisted of three layers equal to f114, f121, and f120. The stratum assigned is that of the lowest (earliest) f120. 117 s60-J3B Large stone that was a constituent of aggregate a7. This group of stones were arranged in the shape of an L most likely to protect a post-Mittani abandonment temporary settlement that includes a tannur, f3. 118 s80-J3B Natural accumulation below accumulation f113 and above natural accumulation f119. Ceramics were not fully analyzed. Items consisted of a ubiquitous shell and a ubiquitous clay wheel. This was the first abandonment accumulation after Mittani occupation ceased. It was dated by comparison with accumulations f113 above f119 below. 119 s120b-J3B Natural accumulation below accumulation f118 and above late Mittani glacis f123. Ceramics included Mittani painted bowls, burnished bowls, footed goblets, jar bases, painted body sherds, and two ubiquitous items. Such a wide collection of Mittani ceramics is indicative that this accumulation was deposited in a time this area was occupied. 120 s180-J3B First layer of accumulation deposited on the EDIII glacis f109. All identified ceramics were Late Chalcolithic. What we can say is that this feature was deposited on the surface of the baqaya glacis f109 before accumulation f121. We hypothesize that the EDIII glacis was kept clean for several successive periods of occupation, which accounts for the general lack of ceramics and items in this covering accumulation. Since we know that general preservation of the EDIII temple mound structures began to lag in the Mittani period, we assign an early Mittani stratum to this feature. We assume that the LC sherds were either deposited by EDIII excavators who dug deeper into the temple mound or that the LC sherds were washed down the mound from deteriorating LC structures above. 121 s160c-J3B Natural accumulation below accumulation f114 and above accumulation f120. No ceramics later than LC3. We hypothesize that the EDIII glacis was kept clean for several successive periods of occupation, which accounts for the general lack of ceramics and items in this early Mittani stratum. We assume that the LC sherds were either deposited by EDIII excavators who dug deeper into the temple mound or that the LC sherds were washed down the mound from deteriorating LC structures above. 122 s190-J3B Higher of two fills of pit a5 dug into the EDIII glacis. Ceramics have not been fully analyzed. Items recovered were carbonized seeds and charcoal, unfortunately handled so carbon dating precluded. Pit fill was covered by accumulation f120 and therefore predates it. Preliminarily dated to the early Mittani period because that is when the area above the glacis apparently lost its sacred function. 123 s122a-J3B Dense, hard surfaced late Mittani wahal glacis under accumulation f119.. As this feature was not excavated, no ceramics or items were recovered or analyzed. Dated primarily by its relative position in the stratigraphic column. 124 s122a-J3B One of the arranged line of 46 large stones that comprise stone installation a16 which intruded glacis f123. We hypothesize that these stones, which roughly follow the alignment of the original EDIII revetment wall f11, were installed in the late Mittani period after f11 became covered with accumulation. We have sometimes referred to these stones as memory stones. 125 s122a-J3B One of the arranged line of 46 large stones that comprise stone installation a16 which intruded glacis f123. We hypothesize that these stones, which roughly follow the alignment of the original EDIII revetment wall f11, were installed in the late Mittani period after f11 became covered with accumulation. We have sometimes referred to these stones as memory stones. 126 s20-J3B Topsoil on tell surface. Initially excavated as a J2 feature. 127 s190-J3B Lower of two fills of pit a5 dug into the EDIII glacis. Ceramics have not been fully analyzed. Pit fill was covered by fill f122. Preliminarily dated to the early Mittani period because that is when the area above the glacis seems to have lost its sacred function. 128 s190-J3B Cut of pit a5 dug into the EDIII glacis. The function of the pit could not be determined. Since it could have been dug at any time from the EDIII period to the early Mittani period, it is assigned to the first Mittani stratum. 129 s30-J3B Layer of accumulation below topsoil f126 and above accumulation f98.. Ceramics have not been fully analyzed. Items are small and reflect modern (glass) and more ancient technologies (stone tool). Initially excavated as a J2 feature. 130 s60-J3B Large stone that was a constituent of aggregate a7. This group of stones were arranged in the shape of an L, most likely to protect a post-Mittani abandonment temporary settlement that includes a tannur, f3. 131 s60-J3B Small stone that shared the alignment of a7, but did not seem a part of it. Sits in post-Mittani abandonment accumulation f107. 132 s60-J3B Large stone that was a constituent of aggregate a7. Ceramics partially analyzed and included sherds from LC through Mittani. Items were ubiquitous. Wide mixture of ceramics and items suggests abandonment, fitting the relative date suggested by accumulations above and below. 148 s122a-J3B Floor of compacted soil below floor accumulation f163. Ceramics included sherds from most periods of occupation from LC through Mittani. No items found. The extension of wahal glacis f123 to the south covering the EDIII revetment wall f11. This floor and its two covering accumulations, f163 and f164, were assigned the same stratum as it is likely that although not coincidental they nevertheless built up over a relatively short time frame. 149 s190-J3B Higher of two fills of pit a5 dug into the EDIII glacis. Ceramics have not been fully analyzed The only item was a collection of seeds, unfortunately touched during excavation and therefore not useful for radiocarbon dating. The pit cut and fills have been assigned to the same early Mittani stratum under the assumption that the pit was cut and filled at about the same time. 150 s120a-J3B Layer of ashy soil below accumulation f147 that overlays accumulation f180. Ceramics from many periods including Late Chalcolithic and Middle Assyrian. 152 s122a-J3B Wahal glacis under accumulation f180. Ceramics have not been fully analyzed. There was a geometric seal impression recovered, which may be from a period as early as LC3. This wahal glacis is the continuation to the north of glacis f123, which can be reliably dated by its imbedded memory stones. The glacis is laid atop the EDIII revetment wall 153 s190-J3B Lower of two fills of pit a5 dug into the EDIII glacis. No ceramics or items recovered. The pit cut and fills have been assigned to the same early Mittani stratum under the assumption that the pit was cut and filled at about the same time. 154 s120b-J3B Large stone that sits in accumulation f139. We have sometimes referred to these stones as memory stones. 160 s190-J3B Cut of pit a6 dug into EDIII glacis. Unfortunately the recovered seeds, rendered useless for dating by human contact could have accurately provided data for stratum assignments. The function of the pit could not be determined. Since it could have been dug at any time from the EDIII period to the early Mittani period, it is assigned to the first Mittani stratum. 161 s120b-J3B Displaced stone that sits in accumulation f146. Stratum assignment based on the accumulation in which it sits. 162 s20-J3B Topsoil on tell surface. 163 s122a-J3B Compacted accumulation on the surface of floor f148. Stratum assignment based on the accumulation on which it rests. 247 s122a-J3B Compacted natural floor below accumulation f240 and above accumulation f253. Ceramics not fully analyzed. Stone and clay items are ubiquitous. A key aspect of this feature is that most of the memory stones atop the now-covered revetment wall rest on this accumulation. These stones were the last significant construction activity in this the west sector of J3. The stratum can be confidently assigned based on this and equivalent activity in the east sector of J3 (500-600 series of features). 248 s120a-J3B One stone in an arc of six, a8 that rests on accumulation f182. Stratum assignment based on the accumulation on which it rests. 249 s120a-J3B One stone in an arc of six, a8 that rests on accumulation f182. Clay, stone, and shell items ubiquitous. Dated primarily by its relative position in the stratigraphic column. 252 s180-J3B Natural accumulation that covers several brick installations, including f215. Ceramics were all Late Chalcolithic or earlier. All but one item were Uruk seal impressions, sealings, or clay lumps. The presence of LC and Uruk material so close to the surface and in accumulations dated to the Mittani period can be best explained by assuming that the much earlier material was brought to the Mittani surface by people who dug below the EDIII glacis f109, perhaps as a result of construction or grave preparation. As stated for the stratum assignments of pits and fills, we cannot say with certainty when between the EDIII and Mittani periods the digging took place, so we assigned the later strata. 253 s122b-J3B Natural accumulation in below floor f247 and above accumulation f257 Ceramics not fully analyzed. Large number of clay and stone artifacts speak to occupational activity. Dated primarily by its relative position in the stratigraphic column. 254 s122c-J3B Natural accumulation below accumulation f251 and above accumulation f261.. Ceramics not fully analyzed. Large number of clay and stone artifacts speak to occupational activity. The bird-like vessel may be from the Mittani period. Dated primarily by its relative position in the stratigraphic column. The zoomorphic vessel may confirm that it is a Mittani stratum. 255 s122b-J3B Stone in that is part of installation a8 and that rests on accumulation f253. Stratum assignment based on the accumulation on which it rests. 256 s122b-J3B Stone that is part of installation a8 and that rests on accumulation f253. Stratum assignment based on the accumulation on which it rests. 257 s122c-J3B Natural accumulation below accumulation f253 and covering accumulation f261. Ceramics and items filled thirty q-lots. Ceramics in sample lots were Mittani, A large number of items were recovered, including grinding tools, figurines, kiln waste, door sockets and shells. The most significant artifacts were a set of frit beads and a pendant, and a bone needle. The large number of sherds and items recovered validate occupation although no trace of buildings were found. The ceramics analysis and the design of the pendant indicate a flourishing Mittani period is an appropriate stratum. 258 s190-J3B Small rectangular lens of crusted soil, the fill of pit a10. Ceramics and one grindstone fragment were recovered. Ceramics did not yield a date. The pit cut and fills have been assigned to the same early Mittani stratum under the assumption that the pit was cut and filled at about the same time. Although the pit could have been dug and filled at any time from the EDIII period to the Mittani period, we chose the early Mittani period as the most conservative. 259 s650b-J3B Higher of two soil layers excavated from below the bottom of pit a6 to determine the sub-surface components of glacis f109. Recovered ceramics were Late Chalcolithic. The three items were a lithic fragment, a piece of touched charcoal and a shell bead. Each of the three pits cut into the EDIII glacis (a5, a6, a10) was excavated below the cut to determine the date of features below. We anticipated that this material might be the source of the Late Chalcolithic sherds and Uruk seal impressions found in feature f252, above he pit cut of a10. The stratum assigned reflects an intermediate interval between LC3 and EDIII periods. 260 s650b-J3B Soil layer excavated from below the bottom of pit a5 to determine the sub-surface components of glacis f109. Recovered ceramics were Late Chalcolithic. The three items were a lithic fragment, a piece of touched charcoal and clay lumps. Stratum assignment based on the accumulation on which it rests. 331 s650c-J3B Topmost of a series of fills in k105 used in the construction of the EDIII revetment wall. It covers fill f92. Seen only in section so no ceramics or items recovered. This fill lays between the LC3 baqaya glacis f58 and the EDIII baqaya glacis f50. Its purpose was to raise the level of the surface of the temple mound to meet the top of the EDIII revetment wall f11. 332 s122b-J3B Two missing stones in k109 that rest on accumulation f253 and that form the outside perimeter of stone installation a9. They were not measured or photographed before preliminary removal. Stratum assignment based on the accumulation on which it rests. 333 s50-J3B Natural accumulation in k94 below accumulation f223. Dated primarily by its relative position in the stratigraphic column. 334 s650b-J3B Layer of baqaya in k23 atop layer f263. No ceramics or items recovered. Each of the three pits cut into the EDIII glacis (a5, a6, a10) was excavated below the cut to determine the date of features below. We anticipated that this material might be the source of the Late Chalcolithic sherds and Uruk seal impressions found in feature f252, above he pit cut of a10. Dated by the accumulation into which it is cut. 344 s30-J3B Fill in k1 in pit cut f343. Dated by the cut in which it sits. 345 s50-J3B Natural accumulation in k1 under layer f341 and accumulation f242. Dated primarily by its relative position in the stratigraphic column. 346 s650b-J3B Covered by the baqaya glacis, f109 and f50, which because of their association (protects the top from erosion) with the main revetment wall, f11, are dated to the EDIII period. f346 may be either the remains of earlier glacis or fill to make a smooth transition from an older glacis, f368, to f109. This stratum assignment assumes that it is EDIII fill. As in many features in this part of the excavation unit, the ceramics within the feature date to the Late Chalcolithic period. Our current understanding of the dichotomy is that except for the baqaya, which is clean sub-soil taken from outside the tell, most of the material used for fills ws obtained from the BA temple mound itself, which at the time of construction of the extant revetment wall and glacis was covered with soil containing LC ceramics, ahaving not been occupied between the periods. 347 s10-J3B At the time of excavation, our first impression was that this was the fill of a pit. Later, when the section was examined, it was clear that this was the residue from a colony of burrowing animals. Because this colony could have been active at any time after the f348 wall was built, we assigned it to the highest stratum available. Ceramics from this feature were securely dated to the LC3 period. We can resolve the conflict in favor of the higher stratum because although the burrowing disturbed f346 and f348, it did not transport sherds from higher strata. 348 s866a-J3B This mudbrick wall is intact and sealed by two glacis, f109 and f368, above. Although it has not been excavated, several floors and accumulations which abut it have been securely dated to the LC3 period. Therefore we have assigned a stratum which is earlier, but still within this period. 349 s650b-J3B This was the fill of a shallow pit which intruded into fill, f351. However, at best it was observed to be sealed by glacis, f50. Therefore it was assigned a stratum in the EDIII period. The ceramics were securely dated to the LC3 period. The conflict in evidence was resolved in favor of the higher stratum. 350 s650b-J3B The cut of this pit, a19, is presumed to have been made soon before the filling occurred, hence the assignment to stratum 66-J3B. 351 s860c-J3B This feature is fill, well sealed by two glacis, f50 and f368, which direcly covers it. Among other things it contains the debris from reshaping of the temple mound. Burial, a22, convincingly dated to the LC3 period was dug into it. Ceramics have been dated to the LC3 period. 352 s860c-J3B One of two fills (f351 is the other) directly below glacis, f368. Ceramics evaluated as LC3 with one possible LC2 sherd. We assume that f352 and f351 were deposited at the same time in an effort to replace deteriorated LC3 structures with a smooth surface over the entire BA temple mound. 353 s10-J3B One of several residues from animal burrows which intruded into earlier deposits. Due to an inability to date them they have been assigned to the highest stratum, 1-J3B. 354 00-J3B Volumetric material cleaned from pit a5, excavated in a previous season. It was assigned to the highest stratum because it contained soil deposited since excavation and residue from excavations this season. 355 s864a-J3B Mudbrick floor covered by fill, f352. The few sherds were identified as LC3. 356 s864b-J3B This fill/floor accumulation, is directly below mudbrick floor, f355, and above compacted soil floor, f357. Ceramics dated to LC3. 357 s864c-J3B Highest of two mudbrick floors abutting wall, f348, excavated this season. Contains an infant jar-burial, a20. Ceramics, including several restorable jars, dated to LC3. 358 s864d-J3B Lowest floor reached this season which abuts wall, f348. Covered by floor, f357. No ceramics recovered to aid in dating. 359 s864d-J3B Fill of a small pit whose purpose is unknown. It intrudes brick structure f361, which seems to be associated with wall, f348 .Ceramics dated to LC3. 360 s864d-J3B Cut of a pit which intrudes brick structure f361. 361 s866a-J3B Brick structure about one meter from the southwest corner of wall, f348. Temporarily assigned the same stratum as f348, pending future excavations. 362 s864b-J3B Most likely the smoothed top of fill, f356, so it shares the same stratum. Ceramics dated to LC3. 363 s866b-J3B Red brick wall, f348, is situated atop this platform. The wall may abut the platform, rest on it, or be bonded to it. 364 s860b-J3B The fill of a pit containing burial a22. The small number of sherds excavated were dated to the LC3 period. C14 dates from two sample sets yielded a corrected date of about 3,600 BC. 365 860b-J3B The pit intruded fill, f351, which was sealed by both glacis, f50 and f368. 366 s00-J3B Volumetric material removed during baulk cleaning and assigned this stratum for record purposes. 367 s10-J3B A hole dug by a fox into wall, f348, on the last full day of excavation season MZ(2010-U). 368 s860a-J3B A crusty surface which covers fills f351 and f352 and wall f348. No ceramics were recovered to date this surface, which was well-sealed by glacis f50 and f109. Nevertheless, the evidence is very strong for placing the crust in an LC3 stratum. endlist
