Since this square has been previosuly investigated in 2001 by a team of the university of Tubingen, directed by Prof. Peter Pfalzner, the unexcavated area in k71 is at present small, and it limited to the SE corner of k71. In particular, the extension of the unexcavated area to the W is given by r1, and, it measures 58cm W from m4254 and 300cm N to m4254 on the S. The topsoil, in the small area left to our investigation in this square, is crumble and soft in consistence and is characterized by a very loose and fine texture and by the presence of rooths, pebbles, few pottery sherds and it is light brown in color. f 2 df ts ds f2 is the topsoil in k72. It is characterized by a crumble and soft consistence, by a very loose and fine texture and by the presence of bushes and rooths. Once removed, is a bit dusty and rich in pebbles. Few are the pottery sherds recovered while removing this feature. f2 is light brown in color. ;No pottery sherds have been recovered while removing this feature f 3 df ts ds f3 is the topsoil in k73 which covers the whole unit. It is crumble and soft in consistence and is characterized by a very loose and fine texture; this feature is rich in bushes and rooths, which give to the soil a dark colour. When removed it is dusty and is characterized by the presence of small stones (generally aprox. 10x6cm in dimension) and few pottery sherds. f3 is light brown in color. f 4 df ad ds f4 is a natural accumulation located directly below the topsoil; as for f1, the extension of this natural accumulation is limited to the SE corner in k71, since this square was investigated in 2001, and for this reason, the unexcavated area of k71 is -at present- small, and it limited to the SE corner of k71: the extension of the unexcavated area to the W is given by r1, and, it measures 58cm W from m4254 and 300cm N from m4254. f4 characterized by a compact surface but it consists of patches of harder and softer soil; f4 is fine texture and, once removed, it is crumble; when dry or removed it is a bit dusty and light grayish in colour. It is light brown in color. It is the same of f5 in k72 and f6 in k73. ;it measures 58cm W from m4254 and 300cm N from m4254 on the S f 5 df ad ds f5 is a natural accumulation under the topsoil in k72 that covers the whole unit. The feature is characterized by a compact surface and consists of patches of harder and softer soil. f5 is very loose and fine in texture, once removed it is crumble in consistence and a bit dusty. f5 characterized by the presence of small stones (these are generally aprox. 10x6cm in dimension) and it is light brown in color; when dryes it is light grayish in colour. It is the same of f4 in k71 and f6 in k73. While removing this feature a fragment of modern pottery has been recovered; this presence is to address to the erosion of the tell surface (f5 is a natural accumulation below the topsoil). f 6 df ad ds f6 is a natural accumulation located directly below the topsoil (f3) in k73, that covers the whole unit. f6 is characterized by a compact surface and it consists, as seen in other J04 loci at this elevation, of patches of hard and soft soil. The S portion of the square is characterized by the presence of several rooths. f6 is light brown in color, has a crumble consistence and is very fine texture; when dry it is a bit dusty and light grayish in colour. It is the same of f4 in k71 and f5 in k72. f 7 df ad ds f7 is a natural accumulation in the SE corner in k71 (40 cm W and 120 N to m4254), located directly below f4 in k71. f7 is the same of f4, but we decided to change the feature number in order to avoid contamination while collecting the pottery. It consists of compact areas mixed with patches of soft ones, has a very fine texture and it is characterized by the presence of rooths. f7 is grayish in colour (the colour changes from light yellowish brown and yellowish brown). While digging this feature, small irregular stones have been noticed and only few pottery sherds have been collected. f7 presents the same characteristics of f8 in k72 and f9 in k73. f 8 df ad ds f8 is a natural accumulation in k72 that covers the whole unit. The feature is located directly f5 in k72. f8 consists of patches of hard and soft soil and is characterized by the presence of phytolyts. It is the same of f5 (we decided to change the feature number in order to avoid contamination while collecting the pottery) and presents the same characteristics of f7 in k71 and f9 in k73. While removing this feature, two floating limestones, f19 and f20, have been exposed f 9 df ad ds f9 is a natural accumulation in k73, right below f6, that covers the whole unit. It consists of patches of hard and soft soil, it is soft in consistence and fine texture; when removed it is crumble and dusty. The feature is characterized by the presence of phytolyts. It is the same of f6 (we distinguished from f6 it in order to avoid contamination in the pottery) and presents the same characteristics of f7 in k71. f 10 df wall ds f10 has been assigned to a large group of limestones located in the North-West portion of k71, with a NW/SE orientation, which could be possibily part of a larger stone structure. f10 was almost completely exposed in 2001, when the German team directed by Prof. P. Pfalzner, dug a trench running W-E in this portion of the tell Terrace, T14, as visible in v6. f10 consists of large rectangular stones and of irregular ones, and the structure, seems to have a trapezoidal shape, with an orientation slightly oblique respect to the allignment of the Secondary Apron exposed in J02 area. The stones are embedded into mud mortar with small stones between the joints (characteristics that reminds the building tecnique of the secondary Apron). At present, it is unclear whether f10 continues further more to the North: in k71 f10 seems to reach its higher elevation, and no stones -at present- at visible in k70, located N and to a higher elevation respect k71. We have not dug yet in k71, and f10 seems to rest on f50 (and thus, f50 could be a possible floor surface). However, it could possibly be that f50 is an accumulation which covers the lower portion of f10 (in the S portion of the locus). f50 covers as well some isolated stones (such as f11 and f16), which probably originally belong to f10. At present, these stones have been labeled as different features from f10 since it is not clear whether they were part of f10: only by digging f50 this relationship will be clear. f 11 df st ds f11 has been assigned to two floating limestones close to the W section in k71: f11.1 and f11.2. These limestones are thought to be originally part of f10, the large limestone structure in the NW portion of the locus. They are partially covered by f50 and therefore, it is not clear whether they belong -or not- to f10; for this reason we decided to label these stones separately from f10. f 11.1 df st ds f11.1 (see relays n. r1, r2, r3,r4) has been assigned to a floating limestone close to the SW section in k71. This limestone (toghether with f11.2 and f16) could be probably originally part of f10, the large limestone structure in the NW portion of the locus, and possibly have moved from its original position and later, partially covered by f50; however, since its relationship with f10 is unclear, we decided to label this stone with a different feature number. f 11.2 df st ds f11.2 (see relays n. r12, r13) to a floating limestone close to the SW section in k71. This limestone (toghether with f11.2 and f16) could be originally part of f10, the large limestone structure in the NW portion of the locus, and possibly have moved from its original position and later, partially covered by f50; however, since its relationship with f10 is unclear, we decided to label this stone with a different feature number. f 12 df st ds f12 (r5, r6, r7) has been assigned to one large floating limestone in the S baulk of k71. This limestone is considered to be originally part of f10, the large limestone structure in the NW portion of the square, and possibly have moved from its original position and later, partially covered by f50; however, since its relationship with f10 is unclear, we decided to label this stone with a different feature number. f 13 df ad ds f13, located directly below f9, is a natural accumulation in k73 that covers the whole unit. It is characterized by a mixture of very hard surfaces alternated with soft patches, probably due to the exposure to water. f13 is rich in little pebbles and phytolyts. f13 is the same of f9, the accumulation above it (we changed feature number in order to keep better track while collecting the pottery). f 14 df ad ds f14, located directly below f8, is a natural accumulation in k72 that covers the whole unit. It is characterized by compact surfaces mixed with soft ones, by the presence of phytolyts and small stones and is poor in pottery sherds. It is the same of f8 (with the only difference being the presence of phytolyts) and abuts two floating stones f19 and f20 located in the N portion of the square. At the bottom elevation of the feature two animal holes (one located at 2m N and 180m E to m3664; the other at 2m E and 120m N to m3664) have been noticed. f 15 df ts ds f15 has been assigned to the topsoil layer in k81. This locus has been previously investigated by a German team directed by Prof. Peter Pfalzner in 2001, and is interested partially by a cut, approximately 1m wide and 60cm deep, in the N portion of the square (where a trench, C15, running W-E was dug). The topsoil is characterized by the presence of bushes, spread in the whole locus. The topsoil is very soft in consistence, and is characterized by a fine and loose texture. f15 is a bit dusty when removed and is light brown in colour. f 17 df ly ds f17 is a brick melted layer, located in the N area of k81. This feature consists of a deposit where it is not possible to recognize individual bricks but in which it is clear that the soil matrix do consists of bricky material. f 18 df ad ds f18 is a brick melted accomulation visible in the N baulk of k81. Probably it is the same of f17, which has been exposed in the N portion of the square. The soil matrix of f18 do consists of bricky material although it is not possible to recognize individual bricks. f 19 df st ds f19 has been assigned to three floating limestones close to the W section in k72: f19.1, f19.2 and f19.3. These limestones could be originally part of f10, the large limestone structure in the NW portion of k71. The three limestones are large in size and two are almost rectangular in shape. f19.1 rest on f128 while f19.2 and f19.3 rest on f100, as visible in v35 or v40. f 20 df st ds f20 (r26, r27, r28) has been assigned to a large rectangular limestone, in the N section in k72 (as visible in v35 or v40). f20 could be originally part of f10, the large limestone structure in the NW portion of k71, and moved here from its original position. f 22 ;df ts ds f22 is the topsoil in k63 which covers the whole unit. It is characterized by a crumble and soft consistence, by a loose and fine texture (a bit dusty when removed) and by the presence of several bushes and rooths. While removing this feature we noticed the presence of small stones. Only few pottery sherds have been collected. f22 is greyish in color on the surface, but, once removed it is characterized by a dark brown colouration, due to the presence of several roots and organic material. f 23 ;df ad ds f23 is the natural accumulation under the topsoil in k63, and it covers the whole unit. It is characterized by a mixture of very compact surfaces alternated with patches of soft soil; it has a crumble and soft consistence, a fine texture, and is a bit dusty when removed. It is characterized by the presence of little pebbles. f 24 ;df ts ds f24 is the topsoil in k74 which covers the whole unit. It is very compact but soft in consistence and has a very loose and fine texture. When removed with the big pick it chunks and is a bit dusty and it is greyish in color. It is rich in roots and organic material. When we removed this feature small stones and few pottery sherds have been collected. f 25 ;df ad ds f25 is the natural accumulation under the topsoil in k63 that covers the whole unit. The feature is located directly below f24. It is characterized by a mixture of very hard surfaces alternated with soft patches and by the presence of roots. It is compact but soft in consistence and has a fine texture, and is dusty when removed. f25 is light brown in color. f 34 df ad ds f34 is a natural accumulation in k64. It consists of patches of hard and soft soil and is very fine in texture. When removed with the big pick it has a blocky structure and is a bit dusty. Among the findings, three islamic pottery sherds have been collected (they have been labeled as q53.1). f 36 df ad ds f36 is a natural accumulation below f28 in k74. The feature is crumble and soft in consistence and is characterizeb by patches of compact and soft soil; f36 is very fine texture, a bit clayish (it leaves color on fingers) and is dusty when removed. f36 is the same of f37 (in k63). c# 10YR 6/6 co brownish yellow
