.bk J04 .fl Q830sC.j .fd daily journal Q830 .ei sC .ed Q830 .rd Q830 .ri sC -mk bwp put the NW corner marker in k83 (m4413). -sf Tomorrow aS will leave Tell Mozan, therefore today is her last day of work in our unit. -wk Today Vincent and Carmen were looking for some workmen. I send Tar to J3 East and Sipan to J1. Concerning the workmen, I would like to say that they are all working very well. Among all of them, Shiar is working hard all the day and he is alwars ready to help workmen in other squares of the unit if necessay. I have to say that I am also particulary happy with Hudur. I have been told to he was not a very good workman. However, since his first day of work he has been working constantly within his team. -dy dM took a general view of k74, k73 and k72 showing the compact surfaces in the three square at the same elevation (v41, v41a). k 84 dy Before start digging in k84, dM took a particular view of the skull exposed yesterday (v42); we then start digging f72, starting at aprox 40cm W from the E section, where the skull is located. We were waiting for hPu to come and look at the skull. Once in our unit, hPU removed the skull, explaining us how to dig it, and, more in general, teaching us how to dig bones and how to handle fragile bones. hPU thinks that this skull could belong to a wolf, in spite of its small dimensions, or to a particular race of racing dog. We then continued digging f72 (q148, q160, q161). At the elevation of m4412 +63 –106 the feature is characterized by a compact surface that, once removed, is very soft in consistence and very fine in texture; f72 is the same of f64 in k74 (very compact and very fine in texture). We thus called dM in order to take a general view of f72 and show the similarity between f72 and f64. At the elevation of m4411 +63 –104 the soil color and the sopil matrix changed. We therefore assigned a new feature number to this accumulation, f76, and started digging the new feature (q164). f76 is characterized by a compact soil (very soft once removed) and presents a cruble a loose texture; f76 it is dark brown in colour and it is rich in phytolits (which give a platy structure to the accumulation when it is removed with the pick); this feature seems to be rich in organic materials. -nr Lots of bones have been recovered up to date in this small portion of the square, compared the number of bones recovered in the whole unit. k 83 dy Today we finished to remove f71 (q149) in the NW area of k83 (120cm N to r35). In the NE area of the square f71 is cut by f65. Therefore we decided to remove the small portion of f65 still in place in the E baulk of k83 as well as in k73 (f65 has been assigned to the German trench in the E baulk of the square). The portion of baulk that is interested by the cut of German trench is 140cm S and 100cm W to m4394. Once the workmen finished to remove f65, I move them to k82, in order to investigate whether f71 (i.e. a compact surface characterized by the presence of pottery sherds, fragments of tannur, small stones and few pebbles) continue in this square or not (in k82 we exposed not only the same accumulation as f71, but also the glacis and the baqaya). -sg Once we expose the glacis and the baqaya in k82, I called gB and jO in order to discuss and plan the strategy for this portion of the unit (k82 and k83). gB suggested that we could now concentrated our efforts in k83 and look for the face of revetement wall f127 in k83. Therefore, we put a string where the revetement wall should be located (i.e. alligning it with the revetement wall as it is visible in J2), and start digging S to this string (r35). It however to k83 presents different elevations between the N and S area, due to previous archaeological investigation: the S area of the square (280m N to m4409) is m4377 +64 –143 in elevation. This area was investigated by mH and aP during the 2005 excavation season. The N area of the square, where the glacis layer has been exposed (f77), is 120m N to r35. We started digging in the S area of the square. We assigned f78 to the accumulation located here and we start by removing this feature (q166) with the little pick in a small area, which is 60cm S and 400m E from r35, at the elevation of m4377 +64 –143. This small area is few centimeters higer respect the S area of the square (i.e. 240m N from m4409). We thus decided first to reach the same level as the S area of the square, and then to dig the accumulation located there, in order to understand –given the different elevation- if here there was a different accumulation. At the end of the day, we exposed in this small portion of the square two alligned stones, (large in dimension) and a pebble surface, f143 (composed by pebbles which have all the same dimension) E to these stones. The elevation of the stone is m4377 +56 –143; the elevation of f143, the pebble floor, is: m4377 +58 –143. Tomorrow we will finish to remove f78, where it abuts the E baulk; then, we’ll take a general view of these stones and of the pebbles and of the glacis and we’ll start digging f78 in the S area of the square (240m N from m4409). k 82 dy Today we start digging in k82 in order to investigate whether f71 (i.e. the compact surface characterized by the presence of pottery sherds, fragments of tannur, small stones and few pebbles) exposed in k83 continue also in this square or not. We started by removing a collapsed stone and its pedestal in this square. We assigned f73 to the collapsed stone which is located in the SE corner of the square and f74 to its pedestal (q155, r34). Before removing f73 and f74, dM took a close view of the whole square (v41) and of the stone and its pedestal (v41a). This stone was originally located on top of f74 as demonstrated by a view tooked by mH during the 2005 excavation season (J2v62, V17do214 on O803). We thus start removing the accumulation in the S arew of k82, f75. While removing f75 (q156, q162) we expose in the SW area of the square the baqaya and the glacis. I thus moved the workmen again in k83. Concerning the elevation in the portion of k82 investigated today, it is to notice that there is a difference in elevation, due to the slope of the hill: the top elevation is given by the baqaya (m4413 +137 –143), the bottom elevation is given by the glacis (m4413 +101 -143). It is also to notice that the baqaya is visible only in a very small area abutting one stone, the glacis is extended in all the S area of the square investigated today (i.e. 120m N and 400m e to r35). On the W side of the secondary apron, in J3 E, the baqaya and the glacis have been also found below the floating stones. Today is the last day of work in k82. k 73 dy Today we finished to remove what remains of the German trench in this square (f65, q152). f65 interests only the NW area of k73 (140cm S and 200cm W to m4394). In its E limit, the German trench cut some bricks: two lines of bricks and a layer of grey mortar between them is in fact visible right in the E edge of the German trench cut. The bottom of the German trench is at the elevation of m4402 +49 –143. k 74 dy Today after breakfast cC, vN, mNH and aS digged in k74, removing part of f64 (q158, q159). They dug with the little pick only in the E portion of the square (i.e. 400m N and 120m W to m3833) removing aprox 5-10cm of soil around the tannur and the concentration of pottery sherds. They exposed other pottery sherds and another fragment of tannur have been (elevation of m4393 +66 -106). After breakfast I send to mKB q158; she analyses the pottery and all the pottery sherds belong to Mittanian period. k 63 dy Today we continued digging f67 in k63 first in the S area of the square (400m W and 200m N to m4396, q151) then we move the elevator located in the N area of the square to k62, and thus start digging f67 in the the N area of k63 (400m W and 200m S to m4303, q154, q163). f67 seems to be the same natural accumulation we have been digging in the last days in other squares of the unit (i.e. k73, k74, k64). The soil is characterized by patches of compact and soft soil, is very fine in texture, it is a bit clayish (it leaves color on fingers) and dusty when removed. At the elevation of m4400 +70 –143 we found a first compact surface, which differs in any case by f61 in k73 (this is characterized by the presence of bricks and melted bricks): we are still 6-9cm higer in elevation respect to k73. Tomorrow we’ll contine digging in k63 in order to investigate whether also in this square bricks and melted bricks are present. A stone of large dimensions have been found at the elevation of m4396 +77 –143. k 62 dy Today we continued digging f66 in k62 (q150, q153, q157, q165). f66 is characterized by a compact soil, especially in the NW corner of the unit, and by the presence of small stone and pebbles, which are positined randomly in the whole square. After breakfast we move the elevator in the S portion of the unit and contined digging f66 in k62.
