.bk J04 .fl Q831sC.j .fd daily journal Q831 .ei sC .ed Q831 .rd Q831 .ri sC -dy dM took a general view of k84, k83 and k82 in order to show the continuity and discontinuity within this area of our unit, i.e. a general view of the stones and of the pebbles in k83 and of the glacis in k82. -sf Before and after breakfast cC, pC mNH, vN and I drowned the N and E sections of k74, k73, k72, k64 and k63, since we are going to remove these baulk. mNH will leave Tell Mozan tomorrow, therefore today it has been his last day of work in our unit. -wk Today after breakfast Hussen Husseni e Akmet Mustafa went back home. k 84 dy Today we contine digging f76 in k84 (q168). At the elevation of m4412 +74 -143 we expose a very compact surface, characterized by a different soil matrix: wet, brown in colour, medium fine in texture and crumble (<2mm). We assigned a new feature number to this accumulation and we start digging it in all the square (f79, q172). After two pick runs (the first with the big pick, the second with the little pick) we expose another compact surface, characterized by the same soil matrix of f76 (wet, dark brown in colour, medium fine in texture and crumble -<2mm-) and by the presence of small pebbles and several bones). We decided to stop digging in k84 and to not remove the new surface. f79, and f76 (the accumulation above f79), are completely different from all the other accumulations we have been exposing up to date in k84 and within the whole unit. f76 and f79 are very rich in organic materials, which give dark brown colour and a crumble/loose texture to the soil. I suppose this accumulation was found by mH and aP in k83, and W, in k94 and k93 (which was also interested by the German trench) as the N and W sections of k84 do suggest. I will check their reports looking for these information. We thus decide to stop digging here. Next week we’ll start digging the S portion of the square (220m N to m 3814). Tomorrow instead, we will remove the N and W baulk of K84. dy Today dM took several pictures: a general view of k84, k83 and k82 (v48) and close views of each one of these squares (v49, v50). pC instead took a particular view of f76 (v52, v52a). We stop digging here at the elevation of m4409 +109 -122. k 83 dy Today we continued digging f78 (q167, q171) in the S area of the square (2,80m N to m4409), and stop digging f78 at the elevation of m4377 +6 –118. Several stones (f146, f141) have been exposed, and between them, a very compact surface have been found. jO and gB come to our unit: jO suggests that these stones, which seem to be alligned with the Apron in J2, could belong the Apron; gB, on the other side, observed that by looking at these stones it looks more like that we do not have the Apron here; these stones seem to belong to a wall running N-S (which is parallel to the wall on the E of the monumental staircase), and they could belong to another phase of the same wall or to a structure connected with it. If this is the case, it does not fit with the idea proposed by pP, i.e. which interpreted the wall E to the monumental staircase as a wall trapezoidal in shape which could have been located the “middle” of a specular apron. Therefore, the area E to the monumental staircase (where k82, k83 and also k73 are located) would have had a completely different function/use. -sg In order to undestand whether the stones exposed in the S area of k83 belong wither to the apron or to a wall running N-S or to a second phase of the wall E of the monumental staircase, we could dig part of k82 in order to look for possible alligned stone in this square. k 74 dy Today we continued cleaning f64 (q176, q178) in the W area of the square (200m E and 4m N to m 3814). We expose thus the real face of this feature in this portion of k74; here f64 was covered by few cm of dirt/accumulation. Close to the NW baulk we expose the same accumulation that characterized k73, i.e. a very compact surface with bricky material, light brown/greyish in colour. We stop digging here at the elevation of MANCA. Next week we’ll remove the N baulk of the square, in order to show the continuity of this accumulation in both squares. k 73 dy Today we started and finished to remove the N baulk in k73, which is aproximately 40 cm in height (f21, q173). We also start removing part of the E baulk (f48, q179). I moved half of the team working here to k72. It is still left a small portion to remove. k 72 dy Today we started to remove the E baulk in k72, which is aproximately 20 to 40cm in height (f47, q175). It is still left a small portion to remove. k 63 dy Today we continued digging f67 in k63 (q169); we exposed another stone in the NW corner of the unit, right above the one exposed yesterday. The soil is compact and it is characterized by the presence of bricks and melted bricks: it is the same accumulation exposed in k62 (f66) and of k72 (f63). For this reason, we decided, toghether with fAB, gB and jO, to: remove all the baulks and take a general view of these squares in order to show the continuity of this accumulation whitin them. Today we started to remove the N baulk in k63, aproximately 40cm in height (f39, q177). It is still left a large portion to remove, being this baulk close to the elevator, located in k62. k 62 dy Today we continued digging f66 in k62 (q170). In the N portion of the square we exposed several small stones (f159). These stones are small in dimensions, are characterized by a SW-NE allignment. These stones do not seem to belong to the possible secondary apron we were expecting to find, and do not apper to be in relation with the stones in k71. Also in this square the soil is very compact and characterized by the presence of bricks and melted bricks the accumulation, which is the same of f63 in k72 and of the accumulation found today in k63, f67. The brick fragments, which are close to the stones f159, are particular visible in the N portion of the square (close to the N section) where also some small pebbles have been exposed.
