.bk J04 .fl Q902sC.j .fd daily journal Q902 .ei sC .ed Q902 .rd Q902 .ri sC -wk Today Salah Sadi was present but worked all the day with the electrician -mk bwp put new markers in k73, and k63, and for four new squares: k60, k70, k80 and k90. -dy dM took a particular view of the baqaya (v53) and of the glacis in k82 (v53a). k 94 dy Today we started and finished to remove the E baulk in k94, which is approximately 70cm in height (f81, q192, q195). k 84 dy Yesterday we finished to dig in k84, and today we started removing the E baulk in k84 (f53, q189); this baulk is 180cm S and 100cm E to m4410. Once we reached the same elevation of k74, we expose a very compact surface, light brown/greyish in colour, which is the same of f64 in k74. By scarping this compact surface, we noticed the cut of a pit (with a large diameter), cut that we did not notice while digging k84. The pit interests almost the whole lenght and the whole width of the baulk (it is 180cm long, i.e. 180cm S from m4112, and it is 80cm in its maximum width). While digging k84 we noticed a different colour and texture in the NE area of the square, but did not recognize any pit. Therefore f72 and f76 are features that contain both a natural accumulation and the fill of this pit (f86). We then stop digging the E baulk of the square, and started looking for this pit also in the N baulk of k84. We thus start removing f80 (q193). After approximately 20cm, we found also in this baulk a compact surface where the pit was cleary visible. The cut is 120cm W to m4112 and 30cm E to m4112, and its maximum width in the N baulk is 44cm. We assigned a feature number for the cut and the fill (f85, f86) and took a relay of the pit (r78, r79, r80). -sg Tomorrow we will clean the S section of k84, we will look for the cut of the pit in the section, and then we will start remove the fill of the pit in both baulks. k 83 dy Today we stared and finished to remove the E baulk in k83 (f52, q190). Once we reached the bottom of the E baulk, we noticed some ash spots (which are spread in the western portion of k73 as well). I suppose we reached the ashy layer noticed two weeks ago during the scraping of the section of the E baulk. k 73 dy Today we finished to remove the E baulk in k73, and did not dig within the square. From yesterday excavation was left still a small portion (the S portion), which was aproximately 15cm in height (f48, q184). Once finished to remove the E baulk, we did a general cleaning in the whole square. During the cleaning, we noticed some ashy areas in the western portion of k73. I suppose we reached the ashy layer noticed two weeks ago during the scraping of the section of the E baulk of k83. Tomorrow we will look for the boundaries of these ash spots in order to understand whether they belong to a ashy layer/accumulation and, in this case, the relationship between this layer and the bricky accumulation located close to the N section of the square. k 64 dy Today we move the elevator in k64. We then started and finished to remove the N baulk in k64, which was approximately 70cm in height (f41, q180). k 74 dy Today we started and finished to remove the N baulk in k74. From yesterday excavation was left a small portion, approximately 30cm in height (f40, q181). We cut the E baulk of k74 as a ramp, in order to facilitate the removal of the dirt with the wheelbarrels in this square (f49, q185). k 63 dy Today we finished to remove the N baulk in k63 (f39, q182). From yesterday excavation, in fact, was left a small portion (approximately 20cm in height) which was more thick in in the central portion of the baulk, due to the presence of the elevator (since it was located here). We then start removing f67 in all the square for approximately 3-5cm (q194), and in doing so we exposed a large stone close in the NE corner. South to this stone are visible some brick fragments. Instead, in the N area of the square we exposed a very compact surface which is the same of f66 in k62 and f63 in k72 (i.e. a very compact surface with bricky material, light brown/greyish in colour). Tomorrow we will contine to remove f66 in the S portion of the square. k 72 dy Today we finished to remove the E baulk in k72: from yesterday excavation was left a small portion, aproximately 15cm in height (f47, q183, q186). We then start removing f63 in all the square for approximately 3-5cm (q188), but we did not finished to remove it in the S area of the square. We exposed a very compact surface which is the same of f66 in k62 and f67 in k63 (i.e. a very compact surface with bricky material, light brown/greyish in color) k 62 dy Today we move the elevator from k62 to k64. We then continued and finished to remove f66 in all the square. This was thick aproximately 5cm –10 cm (q187, q191). In this square we have so far exposed two different allignment of stones, both with a SW-NE allignment. We assigned f84 to the major allignment of stone, which we interpret as a wall. This runs SW-NE and cross the whole square. Some pottery have been found on top of some stone of this wall, and have been collected in a different q-lot (q188). mKB looked at them, and told us that there most of the sherd belong to Mittani and that some sherds belong instead a earlier phase (phase 3). At the end of the day, gB and jO come in our unit, suggested me to remove the floating limestones abutting the E section in k62. We thus assigned a new feature number, f82 to the stone (r70) and f82 to its pedestal and tomorrow we will remove it.
