A local farmer with fields north of the tell wants to dig a well to irrigate his cotton crop. The well will be located just outside the outer city walls. We have decided to participate by initiating a sounding in the form of a 4 meter by 4 meter square to be dug by our workmen over the next several days to a depth of about three meters. This is an opportunity to determine if there is evidence of occupation in this sector and, if so, what time period. A 1987 sounding to the west, just inside the outer wall, yielded a layer of pebbles, pottery and clean soil. When the foundations for 15 poles for high-voltage power line passing to the north of the tell were dug, the five nearest the perimeter of the tell yielded pottery andartifacts, while the other ten did not. 1- Saleh al-Abrash, from Umm er-Rabiya, is the owner of a plot of land where he wants to change from wheat to cotton. He showed us the spot in May 98, during our trip here for the Djezire Conference. Since it is located right on the edge of the rise which marks the boundary of the Outer City, we asked that he wait until we come so that we could dig it on our own. He agreed readily. The general good will towards such matters is quite remarkable, and we owe it to a large extent to Ismail. 2- It seems possible that we may have regular accumulations at least below the plow line (possibly .5 to 1 m). We would notice a sudden change in texture of the soil, along with greater concentration of cultural materials. If we are "inside" the outer wall, there would have to be either a brick structure, or possibly a casemate type of structure. 3- It is also possible that instead of a city wall we may have a series of outlying smaller settlements (though in this case the regularity of the oval seems strange). If so, we might have normal accumulation, as within house structures. [Input file: I707GB.J / I707GB.-J]

This book was originally produced in an entirely digital form at the end of the 1998 Season (I- MZ11) by the staff members including gB, mKB, jW, fAB, jL and others. In 2011 it was selected as a book to be featured and developed for the release of the Urkesh website. cJC is updating the coding to incorporate the OH2 excavations into the current UGR format using the old data.
