.bk OH02 .fl I714jlw.j .fd daily journal .ei gB .ed I714 .fn covers I714 and I715 .rd I713 .ri jW v 5 O99 illustrates the complete stratification of k1 as of this date. Most prominent is f5, a fill and f8 a thick layer of laminations below, which is still being excavated. It is taken to the north and includes f1-5 and f8. It also highlights an organized pile of stones in the NW quadrant that was discovered in the last pick run. Not clear in the picture is the location of a small patch of charcoal in the NW quadrant along the west baulk. v5a is a tight view looking east showing the pile of stones, while v5b is a similar tight view looking west. This view represents an interim stage, for the record, hence we did not call the photographer. f 8 ds the pile of six stones seems to have been placed rather than randomly deposited. sg we will pedistal the stones as we excavate, only in order to retain a point of reference. .ri gb f 8 tx I picked, scraped and brushed the surface exposed in No. half of k1 (right after taking pictures for v5). The Eastern portion is harderand drier (and dryness does not seem to be a correlative of excavation times; in other words, there may be a real difference between E and W. Yet, it is not marked enough, nor is there any observable boundary between the two, to allow us to establish a new feeature(though it would match what was observed at a higher elevation between f9 and f8). In the West, the material is more granular and greasy, while in the East it remains scaly and flaky. M1 the general concentration of finds to the West suggests, perhaps, that we have the tail end of a deposit linked with a structure to the West, which is presumably hidden under the rise visible on the surface (see v6). sg we continue digging across northern half of k1, assuming uniformity of deposition (f8). The goal is to find som definition at the bottom which would provide an excellent stopping point for this operation (especially since as of tomorrow the workmen will be needed elsewhere - B6-B7). v 6 ds I took the picture (C5327) laying low, near surface of tell just outside k1, looking W. Adel Kareem's face is visible from within locus, Ahmad Omo is standing on W edge. In the background (and this is the point of the picture) a sharp rise is visible, with Volkswagen parked right on top. This rise is likely to cover a structure linked with our finds in k1. .ri jW -wk again excavating with 16 workmen under the direction of Abdul Kareem. Suleman still not fully functional due to back injury of I712. jW and jL on scene full time to monitor progress. f 8 ds scraped after first pick run. General conditions noted today by gB still apply. More charcoal flakes and more stones are evident. Stones are concentrated in NE corner and in region to south of pedistaled stones. Laminations present in all parts of N half of square. -mk south marker loosened sometime after work hours in I712. No longer being used for relays. v 1 O99 informational view taken on the first of excavation to show the general orientation of the square within its present environment. v1 looks south to show k1 set on a small rise of the outer rim of a depression between k1 and the main tell. v1a, to the SW shows k1 against the most prominent and nearest part of the elevated outer perimeter, sometimes speculated to be the outer wall of the city. v1b is a thght view of the square and f1 looking west. v 2 O99 informational views, taken on the third day of excavation to show general orientation and record the characteristics of the landscape. The digital camera and Freehnd, a computer drawing program, will be used to prepare a template in lieu of marking up Polaroid photos with a pen. f 8 ds scraped after second pick run. The consistency and texture of the laminations began to change, particularly in the western part. Soil became more powdery and took on a more reddish hue. Also somwhat drier. Laminations still clearly evident. v 7 O99 identifies the extent and orientation of a circular patch of brown soil within an area of soil that is more red. v7a shows its relationship to the east baulk and to f8 and f5. f 10 df lamination ds dark soil patch NE corner of k1. Patch is eliptical with long axis 110 cm running N-S. One end of the long side touches the east baulk. The short axis is 70 cm. One end of the short side touches the north baulk. Soil within is Munsell 7.5YR4/3, dark brown. Surrounding soil is Munsell 7.5YR4/6, strong brown. A few red streaks run more or less vertically through the feature. Some charcoal bits and fist-sized stones also inside. c# 7.5YR4/3 co dark brown f 11 df fill ds semi-eliptical paatch of hard, reddish material with pea-size inclusions, resembling packing extending south about 50 cm from the middle of the baulk. c# 5YR4/6 co yellowish red .rd I714 .ri jW -wk six workmen under the direction of Abdul Kareem to engage in final cleanup and preparation for final photographs. -sg with the arrival of the team of German archaeologists, the focus of excavations will shift to Area BA. The excavation work here is finished. Tomorrow morning jW and jL will draw the sections of the west and north baulks. At some time thereafter, the features will be labeled, the surfaces will be covered with plastic and the excavation will be covered with the backdirt. .ri gb v 8 O99 main view of Northern section at the end of excavation. f9 is scored but is not marked in the section nor was it while digging down. It represents the alternation within f8 of granular and flaky, which we have interpreted alternatively as subfloor and laminations. The patches of stones (some pedestalled within f8) are indicicative of the alignment. f 8 sl the alignment of inclusiions was never clear while digging, except for patches of stones and sometimes the patches of gypsum flecks. But the sections show a clear horizontal alignment both E-W and N-S. There seems to be, however, a rise to the East, which was noted while excavating, and which shows clearly in N8. H99 U assume that the rise to the east is part of a general ridge which somehow delimits ane contains f5 (the subfloor). The western edge of this limit ought to be a structure hidden under the toplogical rise shown in v6. If so, the rise to the East of f8 represents some preexisting mass (a decomosed wall? a simple berm?) which retained water and dissolved itself into laminations. M1 stones, laminations support outdoor area, possibly in front(E) of building. But no trash decomposing, since deposit is very clear. v 16 O99 general view from the North - several takes from the ladder. OH2 in foreground, with tell in background; VWagen on slope from top of ridge; John behind VW to mark top of ridge; tent in depression; Mozan village on right simulates what ancient structures in OH2 would have looked like. In the last picture, Ismail's blue truck agiansgt wall of house indicates distance, since it is about as long as VW. f 8 ds inspected excavated area after final cleanup. f8 seems to consist of three more or less equal sections. f9 imbedded in f8 in the eastern third. The separation is still distinct, although the dimensions and orientaion are somewhat altered. In the eastern third, there is a dark area, not yet well defined, which resembles f10 in color and inclusions (eg. charcoal). The middle third is bounded by f11 on the north and contains a line of stones extending south to the unexcavated platform of f8 material in the south half of k1. It appears as if this center section may have bisected two areas of similar use, but it would take several more pick runs to test this hypothesis. The north face of the platform did not show these demarcations, nor did it show any evidence of horizontal separations that might have been associated with a floor. A significant amount of pottery, bone and two possible seal impressions were found in the west part, matching previous experiences.
