.bk J02 .fl P802mh.j .fd daily journal P802 .ei mh .ed P802 .rd P801 .ri mh -sf The staff of J02 consists of mH, vVE, sC, and aL. -sg We had a strategy meeting yesterday with fAB and gB. During the meeting we decided to place our "column" on the northwest corner of k13. Pottery coming out of this 2x2 area, which we call column and whose identification is k101, will be analyzed by mKB so that we will know where we are in time. Bone and visible botanical material will also be collected. Collection methodology will not differ from that practiced at other loci, but the bags will be taged for mKB with a blue tag. We agreed that our main priorities were: 1) continuing excavating k13 until we reach the projected plaza level at the same elevation with the elevation of the place stone coutyard (87m?); 2) Bringing k4 and k3 into this same level and seeing whether and how the first apron f131 continues and how it is connected with the staircase f130 and potential other sturctures; 3) cleaning k100 of the material that has fallen in it during the year; and 4) sloping the western section next to k13, k14, and k15 especially next to k13 where the section is and will be the highest. .rd P802 .ri mH -wk We have 16+1 workmen. The +1 refers to Abdel Hamid, whose can help with the book if needed. We will have him about a week and if we do not need him, he will be restationed to another unit. We have 5 pickmen one of whom apparently promoted himself from a showel guy to a pickman. We have 9 showel guys and 2 wheelbarrow guys although today some of the showel guys were carrying buckets. -mk bP established six contol points for our unit. Three, m3954, m3953, m3952, are located on the western baulk of k13, m3956 is located under a large flat stone in k3, and two, m3956 and m3957, are located in k4 on a southern excavation face roughly located in the middle of k4. -dy We started by removing the top 10cm of the surfaces of k3, k4, k13, and k14. This surface had been contaminated during the winter. In one of the corners near marker m3956, for example, someone had lit a small fire. After removing the first 10 cm, we made the the surface of these units roughly level. During this initial work the whole team of 16 workers worked as a single team. After the surface of the units was level, we separated a 2 x 2 area from k13 for the column k101. This column abuts wall f128 and the western baulk of k13. After this we divided the workmen into two teams. One team will be working on both k101 and k13 around it, and the other team will work in what is left of k3 and k4. We then continued work with these two teams. We took several photographs of the first apron f131 with the intent of showing how the tarp and the plaster placed in between the steps to project the mortar between them had held up during the winter. These are v73 and v74 their subviews. k 101 ds This 2 x 2 locus was separated from the northwestern corner of k13 abutting the oval f128 and the western section of J02. The purpose of the column is to define an area the pottery of which mKB can analyze reasonably quickly. This analysis will help us determine where we are in terms of time period. dy We excavated one q lot q366 with a big pick. sg Our plan is to first excavate a 10-15 cm big pick run in k101, then do the same in k13 surrounding it and continue working these two loci together like this. We left a small pseudobaulk in between the two loci. This baulk will be removed every 20-30 cm or so and the strings defining the locus will be replaced. The purpose of the baulk is to help us differentiate between the two loci. It is not meant to be left standing. k 3 dy We have very little of the original loci left to excavate because stones of apron f131 now occupy most of the unit in its northern and middle areas. There is no baulk between k3 and k4, which makes it difficult to tell where the one ends and the other begins. This situation will improve once bP re-establishes the baulks of these loci. Today we defined our features and q lots so that when we removed the first 10 cm of the surface (contamined soil), we defined it as f136. Underneath we established f139 but defined it as beloging to k4 although in actuality it extends little bit over to k3. k 4 dy We are excavating only in the northern half of the unit. Last year, due to time and efficiency concerns, we did not excavate the southern half as deep as the northern half, which was level with k3 and k13. We continued our excavations in just those areas that were left lowest last year. As with k3 and k13 we fist removed the first 10 cm of the surface, which was contaminated. In the corner formed by the western baulk of k4 and the southern face of our excavated area, just about where r445 is located, someone had lit a fire during the winter. This fire had left marks on the sections. Below the contaiminated soil we stated with f139 and excavated one q lot q367.
