Khabur or Mittani painted jar and dep bowl rims as wel as a deep bowl with ribing below the rim that is Mittani in date. Bases include wide disk bases and a small footed base. As usual there are earlier sherds mixed into the sherds of this feature including 1 Metallic ware jar rim and Fine Chaff and Simple ware conical cup rims. The feature dates to the Mittani period (but see discussion of these two periods in the text note P912). f 174 ns 1 red painted and burnished bowl typical of the Mittani period, 1 wide disk base, and a number of Khabur type painted sherds. Earlier ceramics include Phase 4 ribbed rims and a flat base of the LC3 period. f 171 ns this feature is stratigraphically equal to f174 in the column. Ceramics in it include 1 disk base and 1 small footed base both probably Mitani,1 double rim necked jar from the Khabur period. Earlier ceramics date from Phase h1-JPA and include an S ware bowl rim and slightly convex base, a string cut base with bitumen inside that is thick and probably contained bitumen being applied elsewhere as opposed to a bitumen coating on this cup itself. This feature is mixed containing both late material (Phase h6-JPA and posible 5) and Phase h1-JPA, so the feature is transitional in the sense that it is the interface between these phases but not transitional in the sense of a gradual change through time from one phase to the next. f 150 ns this feature is not in the statigraphic column but is equal stratigraphicaly and by elevation to f171 and f174. Starting elevation of f150 89.01, f171 88.98, f174 88.97. several Khabur type painted sherds, 1 possible Mittani jar rim, 2 Mittani disk bases, so the date should probably be Phase h6-JPA (but may be Phase h5-JPA, see text note P912). Earlier sherds include 1 FC conical cup with a cut base. f 182 ns lower strata of the use area south of the temple terrace wall and next to the retaining wall of the apron. Few sherds, all Phase 1. f 228 ns S ware includs 3 conical cup rim sherds and 1 possible S ware jar sherd. Date Phase h1-JPA f 235 ns Phase 1 jar, bowl and conical cup sherds f 234 ns 1 Metallic ware jar rim, some Phase h1-JPA jars f 244 ns 1 S ware conical cup,and 1 sherd with a hole in the base that is later than Phase h1-JPA. Mixed in date. f 253 ns Concial cup rims, 1 Metallic ware jar rim, 1 Ninevite V bowl rim f 246 ns Phase h1-JPA square rim bowl rim, 1 Pebble Tempered rim, the rest are Phase h1-JPA jar shapes f 240 ns most are Phase 1 but 1 LC3 hammer rim bowl f 245 ns only 2 shape sherds in this feature 1 conical cup rim and 1 Phase h1-JPA bowl rim. Date Phase h1-JPA f 306 ns this feature is in k14 but related to the use area in the column. Many more shape sherds in this feature, all dating to Phase h1-JPA. f 205 ns feature contained only one small rim sherd, date unknown f 209 ns Phase h1-JPA jars, bowl, bottle, conical cup and other cup f 214 ns 1 S ware conical cup rim, a jar rim. Date Phase h1-JPA f 215 ns Phase h1-JPA jar rims and one slightly convex base f 256 ns all Phase 1 sherds f 258 ns all Phase h1-JPA sherds f 268 ns only 3 shape sherds, date unclear f 272 ns only 2 shape sherds, date unclear f 276 ns necked jar dating to Phase h1-JPA f 287 ns only 2 shape sherds in this feature, 1 conical cup and 1 jar, both Phase h1-JPA f 291 ns only 2 shape sherds, date unclear f 294 ns Phase 1 conical cups and jar rims, 1 LC3 jar? rim f 162 ns from the analysis of the body and shape sherds from this feature it appears that it should be dated to the Khabur period but given the fact that there is no clear transition i the whole region from the Khabur to the Mittani period there is the possibility that the feature is to be dated to the Mittani period. q 520 tc si f162 ns 1 Khabur painted small cup rim, 1 jar rim of unknown date q 526 tc si f162 ns number of Khabur painted shape and body sherds, including 2 rims from necked jars, 1 handle dating either to the Khabur or Mittani periods, 1 Phase 4 bowl with ribbed rim. q 511 tc si f162 ns Khabur painted body and shape sherds, 2 Khabur jars, 1 ring base probably dating to the Khabur period, remaining sherds are earlier f 197 ns feature probably is to be dated to the Mittani period q 528 tc si 197 ns mainly Khabur sherds but 1 possible Mittani deep bowl rim sherd q 530 tc si f197 ns 1 Mittani footed base, 1 unpainted Mittani jar, other small ring bases that could be Mittani or Khabur, 1 Khabur period necked jar, some Khabur body sherds, some Phase 1 sherds f 200 ns given the clear Mittani sherds in this feature it is to be dated to the Mittani period but it is to be pointed out that in this feature there are fewer late sherds. However this feature is very unusual in that there are sherds dating to Phase h4-JPA; this seldom happens in the J2 and J1 areas. In q536 there is a sherd from Phase h3-JPA. Suprisingly then in f200 there are sherds from most of the periods between Mittani and Phase h1-JPA but since they are very few it is impossible to call this a transitional feature. The excavator is very preceptive for having noticed the unique distribution of data in this feature. q 677 ns many shapes dating to Phase 1 but 1 ring base made in P ware must be either from the Mittani or the Khabur period since this type of base is very infrequent in Phase 4 and even then does not occurr in P ware. 1 painted Khabur body sherd q 673 tc si f200 ns 1 Khabur painted necked jar rim q 668 ns 1 Khabur painted necked jar rim, 1 rope and incised decorated body sherd probably Phase 4, 1 possible Phase 4 bowl rim with ribbs on top, 1 possible Phase 1 base q 680 tc si f200 ns 1 Mittani body sherd from near the base of probably a footed cup decorated with concentric circles, 1 bright red painted Mitani bowl sherd, 1 Khabur painted rim, rest of the sherds are earlier and probably all dating to Phase h1-JPA q 661 tc si f200 ns 1 Khabur body and 1 shape sherd, Khabur period ring base, some Phase h1-JPA body and shape sherds q 663 tc si f200 ns 1 Khabur body sherd, 1 Khabur unpainted deep bowl sherd, 1 shallow plate with ring base probably dating to the Khabur period, 1 possible Nineite V bottle sherd q 536 tc si f200 ns 1 Khabur painted body sherd, 2 Khabur ring bases, 1 Khabur bowl and 1 bo or pot rim, 1 Phase h4-JPA rim, 1 Phase h3-JPA incised decorated jar
