Introduction

The type of contact “to lean against or to rest on” is relatively rare in J5, representing about 5% of the totals.

Typically leans against and rests on occur in domestic environments where items are placed on surfaces Because this part of the BA temple mound probably served a sacred purpose and was not a venue for residential and commercial activities, these types of contact are almost never encountered. With one exception where stones were intentionally placed atop an extant wall, items rest on artificial pillars of soil.

Leans on

No items or structures leaned on another. Structures were free-standing and items were found imbedded in accumulations rather than intentionally placed on surfaces.

Rests on

Twenty instances where one item rested on another were recorded. Most were stones that rested on artificial pillars formed when accumulations surrounding the stones were excavated and the stone left standing pending further evaluation.. The best example of "rests on" created in antiquity occurred when capstones f192 were placed atop wall f3 to raise its level above growing natural accumulations.
