With the baulk cut back so much, the actual boundaries of the fissure and the higher features are much more clear than before. v167a is a tight view of the lower half of the revealed stones from below, v167b is a tight view of the upper half of the revealed stones from below. On account of foreshortening, the distances between layers or stones shown becomes less accurate the further one gets away from the plane of the camera; however, the baulk is too large and the underground structure too confined to take a level photo of the entire baulk. v 168 ph This is a view from overhead, looking down at the western half of the A12 south baulk. On account of foreshortening, the distances between layers or stones shown becomes less accurate the further one gets away from the plane of the camera; however, the baulk is too large and the underground structure too confined to take a level photo of the entire baulk. v 169 ph This is an overall view of the underground structure, a32, from outside. It also includes most of a34, the line of stones south of the building. v 170 ph This view is an overall shot of a36 from above, showing f348, the first floor, f349, the sherd packing beneath the floor, and f353 and f354, the stone architecture beneath the floor. v 171 ph This view shows the join between the a36 north wall, f376, and the a33 stone "wing", f375. Note how the stones of f375 stick out from the wall, curving on the same axis as the stones below, and how the stones of f376 rest against them. v171a is a tight view of f352, the base of the former west wall of a33, which circles around the entire underground structure. v171b focuses on the join between f352 and f375: although there is no clear seam, it is possible that they constitute two separate phases of construction, due to the differences in size between the stones themselves and the spacing between them. v171c is a tight view of the seam between a36 and a33 at the base of f375 and f376. Notice how the horizontal rows of stones are not continous across the split, suggesting that the courses were not laid at the same time. v 172 ph This view shows the white first floor in a36, f348, as much as was preserved under the part of the A12 south baulk that was cut back. The sherd was found lying directly on top of the floor. v172a is a wide view, showing the section of f349, the sherd packing, and its relationship to the floor. v 173 ph This view shows the sherd packing, f349, continuing into and underneath f376, the north wall of a36. This proves that f349 had to have been laid at the same time as the construction of the walls of a36. v 174 ph This view is a view of the trench of f368 and f369 from the west, looking east. Taken at a different time and in a different situation from the other photographs in the sequence, it is lacking a measuring rod or north-arrow. Also, because of the location of the trench in relation to the underground structure walls, all pictures of the entire trench section must be oblique. Therefore, f174a is a look at the east third of the trench section, f174b at the center third of the trench section, and f174c at the west third of the trench section. v 175 ph This view shows the locations of the thin sections taken from k27. v175 and v175a show the whole section in two halves, and the other photos in the sequence are closeups of the individual thin sections. v 176 ph This view shows the locations of the thin sections taken from k26. v176 and v176a show the whole section in two halves, and the other photos in the sequence are closeups of the individual thin sections. v 167 S gf258,259,303,304,305,306,307,308,316,320,328,329,330,331,336,338,343,344,345,347,348,351,366,370,373,378,380,381 gk26,27 ga32,33,36 167a t S gk27 ga32,33 gf381 167b t S gk27 ga32,33 gf381 168 S gk26,27 ga32,36 gf303,304,305,306,307,308,320,328,330,336,338,343,344,345,347,348,351,366,373,377,378 169 E ga32,34 170 W gk26,27 ga32,33,36 gf286,290,315,348,349,352,353,354,369,373,375,376,377 171 N gf349,352,353,354,366,369,371,375,376,379 gk26,27 ga32,33,36 171a t W gf352,366,369,373,375 gk26,27 ga32,33 171b t NW gf352,353,354,366,369,371,375,376,379 gk26,27 ga32,33 171c t N gf366,376,379 ga32,33,36 gk26,27 172 S gf348 gk26 ga36 172a w S gk26 ga36 gf348,349 173 N gk26,27 ga32,33,36 gf349,353,354,366,375,376 174 E gk26,27 ga32,33 gf353,366,371,372,373,375,380 174a t S gk27 ga32,33 gf371,372,373,380 174b t S gk27 gf369,373 174c t S gk27 gf352,369,373 ga32,33 175 S gi138,139,140,141 175a m S gi137,138,139 175b c S gi137 gf258,259 gk27 175c c S gk27 gf259,316 gi138 175d c S gk27 gf331,333,334 gi139 175e c S gk27 gf347 gi140 175f c S gk27 gf351 gi141 175g t S gk27 gf369 gi142 176 S gi145,146,147 176a m S gi143,144,145 176b c S gk26 gf304,305 gi143 176c c S gk26 gf305,306 gi144 176d c S gk26 gf306,307,308 gi145 176e c S gk26 gf320,328 gi146 176f c S gk26 gf344,345 gi147 v 0167 O3 V14d2073 v 0167a O3 V14d2074 v 0167b O3 V14d2075 v 0168 O3 V14d2076 v 0169 O3 V14d2077 v 0169a O3 V14d2078 v 0170 O3 V14d2079 v 0171 O3 V14d2080 v 0171a O3 V14d2081 v 0171b O3 V14d2082 v 0171c O3 V14d2083 v 0172 O3 V14d2084 v 0172a O3 V14d2085 v 0173 O3 V14d2086 v 0174 O3 V14d2087 v 0174a O3 V14d2088 v 0174b O3 V14d2089 v 0174c O3 V14d2090 v 0175 O3 V14d2091 v 0175a O3 V14d2092 v 0175b O3 V14d2093 v 0175c O3 V14d2094 v 0175d O3 V14d2095 v 0175e O3 V14d2096 v 0175f O3 V14d2097 v 0175g O3 V14d2098 v 0176 O3 V14d2099 v 0176a O3 V14d2200 v 0176b O3 V14d2201 v 0176c O3 V14d2202 v 0176d O3 V14d2203 v 0176e O3 V14d2204 v 0176f O3 V14d2205 i 137 lc 27 tc si f258 tc si f259 nc This item is a "thin section" soil sample that includes material from f258 and f259. el 8329 nv The elevation is taken from the top left corner of the sample. The stones of f352, and of the lower walls within a33 in general, are, on average, much smaller than the stones above, such as in f375. In addition, the spacing between the stones is smaller. This has led us to consider three phases of construction, a lower circle, a higher circle that coincided with the construction of the upper palace, and the square. f 375 H99 A closer look at the stones in f352 and in f375 suggests that the two walls might actually not be the same construction, but be from different phases of construction in the same place. The stones of f352, and of the lower walls within a33 in general, are, on average, much smaller than the stones above, such as in f375. In addition, the spacing between the stones is smaller. This has led us to consider three phases of construction, a lower circle, a higher circle that coincided with the construction of the upper palace, and the square. f 353 M99 The stones of f353, which we have presumed to be the outer face of the wall f352, are all fairly homogenous, i. e. smaller and blocky, with the exception of the three southernmost, which are much larger and very smooth, as if they had been worn down by much traffic passing over them. Perhaps these stones were a part of the original accessway into the underground structure, a ramp leading down, that was replaced later with a stairway. This might also make sense of the brick material found around f354 and f355; if, as I have speculated under f352 and f375, there were actually three phases of construction, then the bricks might have formed the walls and roof of the structure in its earliest phase, with these stones marking the entrance.
