Whereas we had only seen about 2/3 of the andiron from above, the whole base of the andiron is preserved. sb consolidated the remainder, and we left the accumulation sitting above the bridge. After consulting with gb & mkb we decided to leave the andiron in situ. We will place sandbags around it and a bag of sand inside it, then cover it with plastic and backfill in order to preserve it from the elements. C2 2001-09-06_L906okk.j okk Today we plan to excavate andiron i5 and remove it. sb will supervise and see what state of preservation it is in, and then decide how much we will be able to conserve. We will at least take photos of details of the inner surface and try to preserve the bridge which is decorated. The andiron would have provided the hot water and ashes, the other cement-like basin, f26, would be to rinse. This should be linked to a cistern and drains, which seem to exist in A16. Castelleti said that the basin could have been for rinsing and scrubbing the clothes. Since it is waterproof and quite smooth - so the andiron bin could have been a storage place for ashes. Maybe the ashes are from burnt straw. We should see if under the andiron there is an ash layer. The fact that some nice ceramics were found here could be explained: after the bin was not used any more for ash deposit, they used as storage for nice, but damaged pieces, even the andiron itself. We know this because of the typology of the khabur vessels; the rim and neck are painted solid (in our case) or with 2 parallel bands of triangles belong to the earlier khabur period, while the vessels with simpler painted bands are a later Khabur period. In addition the photography is not particularly helpful. In the opinion of the editor, the best interpretation of the situation is that there were a series of pits dug in the same location at various times. A late occupation pit a8, was cut into the fill, f131 of a larger pit, a11. The cut of a11 was designated as f132 and at its bottom, it cut the formal flagstone courtyard, f216. No feature was assigned to the fill of pit a8. Walls were weakened structurally and eventually fell, collapsing and falling downslope. This brickfall settled, the bricks closest to the buildings remained more intact, the layer above was more decomposed by water and settling and the uppermost layer was melted until the point that there are only a few small pieces of brick remaining. Thus the closer to the locus of brickfall, the more likely the bricks will be whole. It also seems plausible that in more confined areas like a room when there is brickfall contained within it, it could create a bowl that allows for the retention of water which then disintegrates brick. This appears to be the case in room a13, where the brickfall is in the second stage of decomposition from the bottom, and there are also water laminations; evidence of water pooling and being retained for a period of time. She remarked that it was significantly different than others of the time and that we should study it in more detail. Looking east at what remains of the section of the west baulk of k3, it appears as if there was a deep air chamber below the main area where the pottery was placed for firing. What we thought was a second kiln and accumulation, f356 and f327 below, was most likely a previous floor of the single large kiln and the top of the heat-producing chamber. She took kiln waste samples, q696.1 to .8, to determine the type of pottery being manufactured, as well as samples of burned fuel, q696.9, most likely goat dung. In addition, there is clearly a second kiln, a31, further to the south that appears in section in the south baulk. Its bottom is at about the current level of a30. It consiste of: well-preserved whole and restorable bowls, cups, various types of large and small jars, and various sherds. Assemblage b1 collects the drawings of these vessels which reflect the contents of what resembles a modern china closet. Their high quality and location near the formal courtyard of the palace suggests a possible use in serving refreshments to visiting dignitaries. They appear to have been suddenly abandoned. A35 2003-08-29_ZH330jW.j !! v255 B11 2003-08-27_N921jw3.j jw cache of 36 Phase 3 jars, both large and small. C1 2003-08-18_N818MS.j ms began removal of jars from this installation today. Declared new feature, f523 to be the fill currently exposed. Until now, f411 was used for the accumulation. The four largest jars, i237, i244, i245 and i246 were defined on N721, and N724 and are part of f411. Today we numbered jars i289, i290, i292, and i293. We also uncovered two more fairly complete, small vessels, i296 and i297, and these were also removed. These latter jar are part of f523. C2 2003-08-18_N818MS.j ms we will continue removing the accumulation f523 on N819 and hopefully reach the floor. It should only be 10 to 15cm below current levels. We also hope the floor will give us some connection with all the walls, f508 to the east, f413 to the west and f458 to the south. There may also be a connection with f208 to the north. C99 2003-08-18_N818MS.j ms We first thought that this was a ph 3 installation because a number of the larger vessels are similar to those found in f1 which was dated to ph 3. We have been considering the idea that this may be ph 2 because of walls we are finding in k14 which may be higher ph 2. The dating is questionable at the moment. We have not reached the floor yet which is apparent because we still have jars coming up. We originally thought i245 was incomplete, but it now appears to be more vertical and therefore the base would be on the floor, presumably. Also, we excavated accumulation, f521 on N817 in the afternoon and uncovered a number of baked bricks which are sitting at angles. This also indicates we have not reached the floor. f508 is asssumed to be the eastern wall but there is no good face. We uncovered a stone foundation on N817 which is a good indication that this is a wall, but it may have been cut away by pit f460. The eastern face is also not very good, but we do seem to have a line of plaster for it seen when clearing the accumulation, f509. These are a very important inventory of ceramics, well dated and of sufficient variety to give excellent comparative evidence for other rooms and open spaces within the Phase 3 architecture. In this corpus there are many conical cups of a type that we have already had from a both Phase 2 and Phase 3 contexts. In fact these cups are typical for the Urkesh palace. An experiment carried out by one of our students (Elaine Fuss) who is herself a potter, showed that if the clay is prepared ahead, the potter can produce 500 a day. These cups then were literally the paper cups of the day. Relatively few bowls were found in the room (10 out of the total of about 40). For the most part the room was filled with jars. This is to be expected for a storeroom. However the variety of jars is very interesting. They ranged in size from very small narrow necked jars to jars with a 50cm rim diameter. We have concluded from this that the room was used to store a variety of goods. That it was not a formal storeroom with jars lining the walls can be concluded also form the placement of the vessels. When we first discovered the deposit only the largest jars and a few cups and small bowls were visible on the surface. As we removed the vessels it became apparent that smaller vessels had originally stood near the larger jars in no discernible order. This corpus is also notable in the fact that it reflects a corpus of vessels we had from a storeroom of a private house in F1. While this room was filled with the same types of jars and cups, it also contained a number of luxury vessels. It was photographed in situ, v231. Standard procedure would have dictated removal to the Physical Anthropology lab for storage and analysis. Several days later, f525 was further excavated to the north and more remains were found along with a jar, i336. Although oriented differently the additional remains were first assumed to belong to the original set of remains. An aggregate, a37 was assigned to the burial and photographed in situ, v240. Comparing the two photographs it is clear that there were two separate bodies in a single grave. Therefore, an item number, i295 is assigned to the northernmost set of remains, while item number i341 is assigned to the southern set. B11 2024-02-10_ZI210jW.j jw A couryard formed by sherd pavement f208, platform f214 that was topped with concave surface f215, stone pavement f105, and well f145, most of which were linked by path f201. Horse bones were found below the platform surface, suggesting a ceremonial function for the aggregate. C99 2024-09-15_ZI917jW.j jW The primary goal of the formal palace building remodel in the time of Queen Tar'am Agade was to construct a shrine and supporting infrastructure for it. This included a food storage room, a39, and several other rooms. These were interconnected by a pathway, f201. The way that this remodel was accomplished was to remove walls f550 and f563 down to the stone foundations and fill the voids on the north, south, and east sides with debris to level the area. The platform was built atop these accumulations. On the south side, the accumulations consisted of soil, stones, sherds, and some small items (including seal impressions) that were compacted and used for intermediate walkways. Two accumulation features in particular were misnamed as pavements due to the surface compaction. These were f490 and f551 However they were excavated as accumulations containing numerous q-lots each. They will be redefined and redescribed. There are two notable thin pavements in the stratigraphic column. Pavement f201 covered accumulation f490, which covered pavement f545, which covered accumulation f551.
