Within the bricky mass a semi-circular area contained several bricks set within ash and appears to be associated with some kind of burning as the black charcoal stains would suggest. In conjunction with my interpretation of k12, this area looks like a production space, outdoor that repeatedly produced ash. Tannur fragments were found in the area of f98 and f103 and extending to the east to k3, a complete tannur was found suggesting the production space continued through from k12, k2, and k3. A more compact surface emerged mixed with soft soil, bricky material, and charcoal fragments, first emerging in the southern half of the locus. A new feature number was assigned and 10 cm removed from the entire locus. C1 2008-07-15_S715LR.j lR Excavated 10-15 cms of f10 and found f16, compact layer at the end of the day in the northeast corner. C1 2008-07-16_S716LR.j lR concentrated our efforts in the western half of the locus that is higher in elevation in order to define the stones f13, f15. 15cms was removed from the entire western half of k2 with two pottery lots created that separated soil in the north and to the south. The eastern half of the locus is more excavated than the west, approximately 30 centimeters. This arbitrary section was cleaned today with nothing seen in profile. C1 2008-07-17_S718LR.j lR this morning the northwest corner was excavated down 5cms. The area showed several brick faces but resulted in only broken and eroded bricks mixed with the surrounding matrix so was removed we then continued to excavate f14, which remains concentrated in western half of the locus. Approximately 10 cms was removed, defining f15 better, a medium sized stone with no other features associated with it. While excavating the soil began to shift from a lighter bricky material to softer and ashier. A new feature was assigned, f22. C1 2008-07-19_S719LR.j lR excavated 10cms of f22 to level the feature. Patches of compact brick melt surfaced while excavating f22 but does not form a complete surface. These patches were left in place. C1 2008-07-20_S720LR.j lR The east section was drawn, photographed, and removed today under f8 topsoil. f27 continued under the baulk, connecting k2 and k3 together. C1 2008-07-21_S721LR2.j lR Square drawn by eE today C1 2008-07-22_S722LR.j lR Starting in the locus by removing f27 brick melt, found only in the extreme east and west. Below, ash was found f22 with several stones and a large tannur fragment surfacing in the northeast corner of k2. We then proceeded to remove 5cms of the ash from the eastern area of the locus in order to level the locus (this area is higher in elevation than the west). C1 2008-07-23_S723LR.j lR Removed 5-10 cms of ash in the entire locus, focusing on leveling out the area and removing patches of compact bricky material. The large stone in the west section, f12 was finally removed today along with the pillar of soil holding it pedastooled. Some fragments of carbonized wood were found in the southern corner of the locus, collected as a specimen. C1 2008-07-30_S731LR.j lR north section was drawn and photographed this morning and the south section on A18's side was photographed. The baulk was divided into sections, removing first the topsoil then the accumulation below f10, followed by f22, ash. Carbonized wood was found in f22, along with 7 scorpions. The entire day was spent removing this baulk. C1 2008-08-02_S802LR.j lR Started to remove the north section of k2 this morning beginning with f8 topsoil. C1 2008-08-03_S803LC.j lC After breakfast we finished removing the northern baulk then continued to remove part of the ashy layer f22, making the east and the west sections of the locus straight and even. C1 2008-08-04_S804LR.j lR removed 10 cm from f22, ash in the southern half of the locus. C1 2008-08-05_S805LC.j lC Today we continued to excavate the ashy layer f22, uncovering in part a harder and compact layer brown in color. Almost at the and of the morning we found a big amount of small bones, according to lR probably pertinent to a bird or to a rodent, and we used a sifter to take all the small bones. C1 2008-08-05_S805LR2.j lR Continued from yesterday to remove the ash f22 in the south area and level the area out. The western side continues to be more compact, pinkish in color but irregular in shape. This surface has been left pedastooled, focusing on removing the ash. C1 2008-08-09_S809LR.j lR On S807 we reached the elevation of A18's pebble and sherd pavement in k12 and decided to stop excavating the ash. We then moved into k2, excavated f22 down 15 cm to reach the same elevation as k12 and A18. By the end of the day, this was achieved. Some small patches remain in the southeast corner that will be removed tomorrow. C1 2008-08-10_S810LR2.j lR Yesterday we stopped excavating f22, leaving the area at the roughly the same elevation as A18 to the immediate south. Today we spent the morning cleaning k2 to define f98. More ash was noticed on the surface of f98, assuming it was f22 that partially covered f98, we began to remove 10 cm. The area then shifted from ashy to concentrated areas of burning with larger inclusions of charcoal, white ash, black stains, pottery, and tannur fragments bounded by f98 presumably bricks or bricky mass in the north. This new feature, f103 was photographed today and 5 cm removed. C2 2008-07-12_S712LR.j lr We plan to open this locus tomorrow and will start by removing a berm that crosses k1,k2, and k3. The north section of A18 will also be cleaned in order to see the stratigraphic profile. C2 2008-07-16_S716LR.j lR Tomorrow, the bricks faces that surfaced today should be defined to see if they are in situ or brick fall. Since the area remains unclear, we will continue to use the small pick to eventually arrive to the same elevation as the eastern half of the locus. The presence of a3 drainage system to the north complements that idea of an outdoor space with several rough pavements to the east, defining an "L" shaped pavement bordering a structure, walls f99 and f107. A35 2024-09-06_ZI906.j lC L_W23d5015 A20w0101 ZI906 lC k3.jpg B11 2008-08-13_S813YM2.j yM E of k2,S of k13 C1 2008-07-14_S714LR.j lR opened this locus today and began to remove the topsoil layer in the western half of the locus, f9. The matrix is softer here than in any locus and by the end of the day the soil became softer with a grayish coloring. We stopped excavating at this level, assuming we are below topsoil, and will continue to remove the rest of the topsoil in the other half of the locus. C1 2008-07-15_S715LR.j lR Excavated the western half of the locus, removing f13 and came down to f17 compact layer. C1 2008-07-20_S720LR.j lR The north section was drawn, photographed, and removed today. The entire baulk was removed as f9, topsoil. Once the baulk was removed, the area was scraped to find the compact brick melt f27 continuing, uniting k13 and k3. C1 2008-07-21_S721LR2.j lR A 2X4 meter trench was cut next to the east section running north to south to provide a sectional view of the brick melt and material below. A similar trench was cut in k13. The first pick run removed 8 cms of the brick melt showing an uneven surface with some areas retaining more of the brickmelt while some areas were showing a soft brown soil, similar to fill but not contained by anything. The compact surface was then removed, leaving the softer layer below. The feature was changed to f29 layer however after excavating another 8 cms down this layer proved to be not uniformly soft but contained fragments of broken bricks within a soft fill similar to f30. Another 5 cms was removed with ash now surfacing towards the west and north with several small stones emerging in the north. The area was left at this level, tomorrow a new feature will be assigned for the ash. C1 2008-07-22_S722LR.j lR continued to excavate f31 this morning, the interface between the end of brickfall and ash. In the north portion of the trench, more ash surfaced with small cobbles, tannur fragments, and animal bones. Moving south of this area, a pebble and sherd pavement emerged below f31 extending towards the south. Great care was taken to expose the pavement, spending the entire morning articulating the surface. Plastic tarp was laid down to protect it. After the area was cleaned, we proceeded to excavate beyond the trench towards the west starting with removing 10cms of the brick melt. Approximately 10cms down, a broken jar was found in place, i11. The area was scraped and determined that the brick melt was thinner in this area, reaching ash 10cms below. The jar is not lying flat on a surface but suspended in the ashy with the base at a slight oblique angle. Immediately to the east of the jar, 5cms lower is a large fragment of a tannur or andiron embedded in the ash f36. The entire north area of k3 was cleaned resulting in brick faces and lines but in poor condition making it difficult to determine if these bricks are part of a wall or brickfall. C1 2008-07-23_S723LR.j lR Yesterday i11 jar was found within an interface between the ash f36 and bricky material f29 along with tannur fragments and small stones within ash however no floor surface was found. Today while excavating around the area where i11 was located, more cobble stones were found appearing similar to a floor surface along with a tannur. The pavement was assigned f43, the tannur f42. In the south, large fragments of bricks were found horizontally with soft ash surrounding it, still part of f29. The softer soil was removed, exposing the brick components which appear to divide the ash between the southeast and southwest quadrants of k3, perhaps a crude retaining wall. C1 2008-07-24_S725LR.j lR finished excavating f31 today, revealing more broken bricks around the tannur area. f42, tannur, was photographed today and yM, sE and lR began to excavate the fill. The reason for excavating the tannur is to see the depth of the tannur. Typically at Mozan tannurs sit on floors with only 5 cms remaining of the base. In the Mittani levels, A18 contained several tannur ovens and cooking installations that are different from the earlier phases. The Mittani ovens found were pedastooled or propped up by bricks allowing the person using the tannur to stand instead of squatting down. If the walls of f42 go down then the tannur dates to the same phase as the Mittani structures in A18 rather than a later phase that built over the earlier ash fills. C1 2008-07-30_S731LR.j lR The north section was drawn today and the south section, on A18's side, was photographed then proceeded to remove the section. The baulk was excavated via features, removing the topsoil, then accumulation f9, followed by ash. C1 2008-08-04_S804LR.j lR removed the sherds and cobblestones from the pavement f43 today with another pavement found underneath. C1 2008-08-05_S805LR2.j lR removed f50 today, the cobblestone pavement C1 2008-08-07_S809LR.j lR In k3, the ash f36 was removed around the tannur and the vertical bricks of f68. This ash appears to go under f35 pavement. C1 2008-08-09_S809LR.j lR In k3, the ash f36 was excavated today finding that our initial assumption about the ash abutting the pavement f35 was wrong. The ash appears to go under the pavement and we thus decided to remove the pavement f35. By the end of the day, bricks emerged in the southeast, likely associated with the bricks in k4, f71 wall. C1 2008-08-10_S810LR2.j lR We then shifted into k12, removing 10 cm of f82 and a strip running N-S of f52. This material was incredibly hard, coming out in large brick chunks but much harder and compact than regular sun baked clay. This material seems to be secondarily fired, perhaps exposed to low heat from whatever created all the ash f22, f24. Several holes are present on the western side of f52, interpreted as animal holes although it's strange to have so many on the surface and may be linked to a specific function associated with all the ash and bricky mass. The largest hole, fill f104 has one corner with brick faces suggestive of a possible door but the other side is rounded, appearing more like an animal hole than a doorway. The fill was partially excavated to see if more brick faces surfaced, these faces were found only in the southern end. C1 2008-08-10_S810LR2.j lR In k3, we started to remove the topsoil from the eastern section reaching the compact layer f17 by the end of the day. We plan to eventually remove the entire east section on the next working day. C1 2008-08-17_S817LC.j lC After the removing of the bones from the pavement f112 to avoid possible damage, we continued to remove the northern part of the eastern baulk of k3. After removing f29 we uncovered the pavement linked to the pavement f73 in k4 and two red flat bricks. C1 2008-08-17_S818lR.j lR In k3, we photographed the pavement f112 this morning after consolidating the animal bones with diluted wood glue. We then removed the bones from the pavement to protect them from getting crushed. fAB made a good point yesterday about the animal skull sitting on the pavement. He noticed that the skull was not crushed, a strange thing if the skull was left sitting on a pavement for a long period of time. Another point is the presence of a horn tip, a valuable piece that is often reused thus rare to find complete. We then removed the rest of the eastern baulk between k3 and k4 to connect pavement f73 with f112, which are two different levels showing that f73 covers f112. C2 2008-07-12_S712LR.j lr We plan to open this locus tomorrow and will start by removing a berm that crosses k1,k2, and k3. The north section of A18 will also be cleaned in order to see the stratigraphic profile. Findings in this locus resulted in exposing the corner of a mudbrick structure (walls f107 and f99) and another wall f129 in the north. To the north and west of the structure, a beautiful pebble and sherd pavement was found, f112, representing one pavement in a series of three found in the same area. Similar to k12, a small bin was found to the south of wall f107 containing different soil than the outside area likely forming a place to store things during the reuse period (the soil was quite clean) with possibly the structure being earlier in construction contemporary to the construction of a700. The orientation of the walls is similar to f97 wall to the north but differs from the orientation of the larger walls a700 and a701 suggesting that f97 could be the northern walls of this structure. The east baulk was extended 50cms west as a precaution to add more room to the unstable eastern edge for it drops 5 meters into A19. This locus is also an additional meter shorter, excavated by A19 using a different grid system than A20 that cuts into the eastern side of k4. The topsoil, f66 was removed, approximately 30 cm down the compact brick melt layer was reached but only in patches was the surface as compact as f27 The locus was strung incorrectly this morning resulting in the distance between m4715 and m3415 measuring only 85cms. The mistake was noticed after the square was excavated and will be left as is. C1 2008-08-03_S803LC.j lC After the removal of topsoil f66, we uncovered a layer, f67 with compact patches of brick melt. After one big pick run we uncovered two new features: a compact layer f69 in the northern and southern part of the locus and a soft material crossing E-W, maybe a fill of a channel or something similar to a cut. In the southern half of the locus, a row of three mud bricks were uncovered, labeled as f71. Tomorrow we will excavate to check if these mud bricks f71, are part of wall. Assuming that the soft layer f70 in the middle of the locus was the most recent we started to excavate it and we uncovered a possible sherd pavement f72 that seems to be the same of the pavement f35 in k3. C1 2008-08-04_S804LR.j lR articulated the wall f71 today, excavated f69 finding f73 pavement below that is at the same elevation as f35. The pavement f73 contains lots of animal bone, with an almost complete jaw (animal unknown) lying on the surface. C1 2008-08-05_S805LR2.j lR Spent the morning articulating the pavement f73, exposing many fragmented animal bones embedded in the pavement. The pavement is irregular in level, likely a simple outdoor floor surface unintentionally created. Once the pavement was fully exposed, it was cleaned, and covered in plastic to protect it for a photograph tomorrow. In the south, f71 was defined, excavating north and south of the bricks. No more bricks were found with the material north of the bricks showing a grayish soil while to the south; f79 was brown, containing phytoliths. Since the soil between these two areas was so different, we created f79 as a new feature to separate between the soils, possibly fill within a bin. C1 2008-08-06_S806LR.j lR photographed the pavement f73 and f72, and covered it. The strategy is to remove the animal bones embedded on the surface which tend to be damaged more easily then we will draw the east baulk of k3 and remove it. I hestitate to remove the east baulk of k3 for the section shows nicely the brickmelt but the advantage of removing the baulk would be to show a continuation of f35 with f73. C1 2008-08-14_S816LR.j lR In k4, bricks f99 were articulated today, these continue to run south forming a nice wall that intersects with f107 wall, running west to east. C1 2008-08-16_S816LR.j lR In k4, we removed several centimeters to come towards the bricks of f99, exposing the faces from the west. Immediately, pavement f112 was found, west of f99. This pavement is under f90, forming a much nicer and more compacted surface than f35 pavement that was found in the same area but 10 cm higher in elevation. Lots of animal bones are sitting on this pavement, including a horn, mandibles, several long bones, and a skull of a smaller animal, perhaps a dog. To the far north, brick faces were found, defining a thick wall running west to east. This wall continued to go down for approximately a meter with no clear floor surface associated with it. f118, a brown compact layer found next to f84 is assumed to be the floor surface that f64 sits on however this remains unclear. To the south of f64, the bricky mass f52 and f82 both have the same floor surfaces f124, f123, and f117 underneath the bricky material making it clear that the bricky masses f52 and f82 are not walls, which I initially assumed. The multiple layers of hard compact floor surfaces with pottery pieces (f117, f123, f124) suggests the area was used for multiple periods of time and contrasts sharply to the multiple pavements in k13, f35, f112 and f122 with the floors in k12 much harder and denser. Inside the bricky mass f82, an installation was found labeled as f114 and f113. We described it as a bin containing three walls with several semi-circles inside the bin. These features were left unexcavated. A large amount of ash was found to the west of the bricky mass and wall f64 that continued to go down abutting the bricky mass for over a meter. At the end we really had no resolution since no good floor surface was found to indicate an outdoor street or a north-south wall to define f52 and f82 bricky mass. My general impressions are that this area was an outdoor area used as a kiln with f114 being the inside of a rectangular kiln and the ash f24 the waste from the kiln use. This would explain why f52 and f82 are so compact and the multiple floor surfaces as the kiln was continued to be reused and raised over time. We removed approximately 20 centimeters from the entire locus and found several brick faces and sherds lying flat. The topsoil q-lot was closed and a new feature f5 assigned the accumulation above the bricks and sherds. C1 2008-07-14_S714LR.j lR Photographed entire locus this morning to show the relationship between f6, f5 and emerging stones; Refer to v3, v3a. A close-up of the sherd lense and brick face was also taken. C1 2008-07-15_S715LR.j lR Excavated f6 today which is located in the eastern half of the locus and came down on f18, the same compact surface seen in k13 f7, k3 f17, and k2 f16. By the end of the day we defined this layer which slopes down in the south and possibly continues under f5. This morning, f11 was assigned to the stones in the north-east corner. A gap exists between the two clusters of stones but no difference noted between the soil inside this gap and the surrounding matrix. C1 2008-07-17_S718LR.j lR concentrated on excavating the western half of this locus to reach either f18, compact layer or similar elevation as the eastern side. Excavated 10cms of f5, finding more sherds laying flat. The sherds were made into a feature, f23 sherd pavement. The features were drawn and relayed with the strategy to remove them tomorrow to see if f18 continues below. C1 2008-07-19_S719LR.j lR assigned the sherd pavement f23 and removed it along with f11, stone installation. The entire western half of the locus was excavated 20cms, reaching patches of f18 compact brick melt mixed with ash. The east section was drawn and photographed, with half the section removed today. C1 2008-07-20_S720LR.j lR finished removing the eastern baulk, following f27 to unify k12 and k13. C1 2008-07-28_S728LR.j lR In k12, a dramatic distinction exists between f24 and f52, not only in color but texture and hardness. To establish the relationship between these two features, we began the day by removing 5 cm from the southeast corner leaving the contact area between the two features in tact to test if f52 continues down or if f24 lies under f52. f52 was found sloping down with f24 clearly coming up to f52. A total of 15 cm was removed from the entire southeast corner then expanded to the north to level out the rest of the feature. While excavating a tannur fragment was found, q94.1, with one surface complete and the other abraded. The tannur piece was floating in the ash without any floor surface visible. The ash alternated from some areas showing black stains while some areas are slightly more compact and brown. f52 continues to go down but stopped excavating this feature after breakfast due to insufficient tents for shade. Tomorrow we will continue to excavate this feature. C1 2008-07-29_S729LR.j lR Set up a small trench in f52, north side to define this bricky mass which we are assuming is a structure. The trench 1x1 abuts the north section extending until the east section. Approximately 10 cm was removed, showing clear bricks below forming a wall. The western outer corner was so undefined that a section was cut; removing melted brick fragments, exposing light gray-pink bricks below (the same color as the brick melt f27). The area was then expanded to include half of f52, working south to see if the bricks continued. The ashy accumulation in the west, f24 was also excavated today, removing approximately 15 cm from the entire feature. It still continues to go down, which is expected as the north section of A18 shows clearly thick ash accumulations. C1 2008-08-04_S804LR.j lR defined the area south of the wall f64 by removing the softer material over a harder bricky surface. To the south, the compactness changes and becomes more like brick fall than what is visible to the north. Possibly brick faces are visible in the east section, perhaps forming a wall running north to south, meeting f64 wall in the north. C1 2008-08-06_S806LR.j lR Excavated the ashy accumulation f24 today, removing 10 cm from the entire western half of the locus. The area began to show alternating layers of pink, gray, and darker ash which was cleaned then covered for photographs tomorrow. We then moved east to define the area south of f52 which shows less compactness then f52, resembling brickfall. 10 cm was removed from this feature today and cleaned. The east section was also removed to define the bricks visible in section. Only a few centimeters was removed from the section. C1 2008-08-07_S809LR.j lR Spent the day removing f24 ash to the west of f52 to reach the same elevation as the pebble and sherd floor in A18. This is not the end of the ash, with the wall f64 continuing to go down but for now we are stopping at this elevation. The ash continued to slope down, alternating between pink and gray. C1 2008-08-09_S809LR.j lR In k12, the brick wall f64 was defined finding an ashy fill f88 between the bricks. We plan to cut a small trench through f52 to see what this bricky mass could be. C1 2008-08-14_S816LR.j lR In k12, we continued to remove the ash f24 in the hope that a pavement surfaces to find the depth of f52 and f64 wall. By the end of the day, a brown slightly compact layer was found under the ash f24, labeled f118. This layer still contains lots of charcoal and ash embedded but maybe the interface between a floor surface and the ash f24. A pavement, f117, was also found under f52 and f82 forming a thick highly compacted floor surface with pottery sherds underneath serving as leveling material for the floor. f117 does not extend north under f64, appearing localized under f52 and f82. This would suggest that f64 is earlier in construction. C1 2008-08-17_S817LC.j lC After the meeting in the field of this morning with gB and fAB we decided to go down to the floor f117 showed in the western edge of the f82 and f52. Because of the difficulty to find a good face for the bricks that are visible on top of the f82 and in its western edge, the best thing seemed to go down to the only sure thing, that is the floor. But looking for the pavement f117 we decide to try to find a good face of the bricks and after removing about 20 cms toward east we found a quite good face. So we decided to follow this face in depth until the pavement, but after about 20 cms we found an almost horizontal layer, very compact. It could be a sort of floor, and it seems that it has been exposed because just above it there are some traces of laminations. It could be in relation with the bricks uncovered today, if they form a wall, or with the bin, still to excavated, in the eastern part of k12. C1 2008-08-17_S818lR.j lR In k12, 5 cm was removed from f82, noticing several brick lines but not enough to define a wall. We then began to excavate the vertical section of f82, to see if good brick faces surfaced and to investigate if f117 curls up towards the bricks suggesting an outside floor surface or if the bricky mass sits on the floor. After following several good brick faces we resolved that f117 goes under the presumed bricks, finding a series of pavements at different elevations. This suggests that f52 and f82 were reused over multiple periods of time, laying down new pavements. It also suggests that the bricky mass is not technically a wall due to these multiple pavements underneath but that bricky material was periodically placed over the pavement during use. All 3 pavements are similar in type, color, and hardness, labeled f123 and f124. C1 2008-08-18_S818lR.j lR In k12, continued to remove 5 cm from f82 then scraped the ash f24 to expose f118. It remains unknown whether both these walls are contemporary with each other as they were found at similar elevations but clearly do not bond with each other. This type of wall construction was found in A18, with the inside walls of a structure supported by another wall on the outside, presumably to help support the inner wall which was vaulted. In k13, either this is the same situation with the southern wall under a3 drain, or that f41 is the inner wall with the room located to the north under the north baulk. To the south of these two walls, a drainage channel was found. The orientation or where the water would have drained into remains unclear with two channels, one to the north constructed of clay (f83) and is oriented southwest to northeast, and the other to the southeast constructed of stones leading into the street with pavements f112 f122. The features found in the area support the idea that this space was a production area, outdoor with multiple areas of firing with the drainage channel used in conjunction with these production activities. The deepest feature we have in k13 is the stone installation found in the last week of excavations that is under and earlier than the drainage channel. The stones are clustered together in an irregular pattern suggesting more of a tomb or grave rather than a pavement. A35 2024-09-06_ZI906.j lC L_W23d5018 A20w0104 ZI906 lC k13.jpg B11 2008-08-13_S813YM2.j yM N of k3,E of k12 C1 2008-07-13_S713LR.j lR Opened this locus today and started by removing the topsoil level. Approximately 15 centimeters was removed by the end of the day with a hard compact surface emerging in the southwest corner. Tomorrow we will follow this level to define the boundaries. C1 2008-07-14_S714LR.j lR Yesterday at the end of the day f7 emerged in the southwest corner. Today we continued to follow this surface and found that it throughout the entire locus. We therefore completely removed the topsoil layer leaving the bricky compact surface, f7, exposed. C1 2008-07-15_S715LR.j lR this locus was not excavated today since we are trying to get down to the same compact surface in all four loci. C1 2008-07-19_S719LR.j lR east section drawn and photographed. Removed half of the section today to link the brickmelt in k13 to k14. C1 2008-07-21_S721LR2.j lR A 2x4 meter trench was cut next to the north section running west to east to provide a sectional view of the brick melt and the material below. The first pick run cracked and removed the hard brick melt, measured 5-10 cms in thickness with softer soil found under f27. The area was scraped, patches of broken bricks within a soft fill was present however in some areas the compact brick melt was still visible. Another pick run removed 8 cms, finding the same broken bricks with soft fill throughout the entire trench. The feature was then changed to f30, brickfall and another 8 cms was removed starting from the eastern end of the trench. Midway through the prick run a small jar, i9 was found sitting up next to brick fragments. No pit cut or floor was noted. The jar was then photographed, relayed, and removed. C1 2008-07-22_S722LR.j lR After removing f27 from the north trench in k13, the soil shifted from compact to soft fill mixed with bricks. This morning the western half of the trench was excavated to the level of the eastern half that was left after i9 was found. In this area f30 turned more compact with larger components of bricks visible yet no clear definition suggesting a wall so it was removed. The entire trench was then carefully leveled, scraped, and brushed. Orange bricks surfaced in the northwest corner with clear gray mortar lines visible both in plan and profile view. To the south of the bricks a small area with over fired clay emerged, unclear if this is a brick that was used as a heating surface. The clay here is light yellow and powdery. C1 2008-07-24_S725LR.j lR Began the day by removing f27 in the southern half of the locus. f27 had a hard crust, flaking off in large pieces with the top more compact. Approximately 10 cms down, the matrix became very soft mixed with some hard clay patches which were easily removed using a trowel. Small stones were found immediately in the south, the extension of f43 in k3 and assigned f50 but only extending 150cms to the north. The stones form a crude pavement that slopes up higher in k13 and appears to sit on soft ash. The presence of this pavement at a higher elevation than we anticipated finding Mittani occupation suggests a later phase, an outdoor area given the pavements found that build over the earlier Mittani level, in this case the ash visible in north section of A18. The lack of brick structures at the elevation of the pavement f50 in all the loci excavated thus far brings up the question as to the origin of the brick melt f27. With the amount and extension of f27 brick melt in 5 loci, one would expect to find bricks structures in the area. gB suggested this outdoor area must be associated with structures that are outside the excavation unit. Bricks have surfaced in the northwest corner of k13, perhaps the structures are to the north. C1 2008-07-28_S728LR.j lR Removed 10 cm, starting from the east towards the west following an ash layer that was found below the brickfall f30. The ash proved to be only localized within a small area yet we continued to remove 10cms from the area to see if better defined bricks were below. At the end of the day, bricks were found in the west, and lines present in the east but still very unclear and confusing. f41 is now starting to form a either a thick wall of 5 bricks wide or a pavement. One argument for defining f41 as a pavement rests on the burned area sitting on one of the bricks of f41, similar to a hearth of some sort. This could be also a reuse of the original wall, setting a hearth, f59, over the wall after abandonment and build-up of the area. C1 2008-07-29_S729LR.j lR Yesterday more bricks were found in the northwest corner extending to the east however the eastern boundary remained unclear. Today we focused on excavating the eastern half of the locus, removing humps of soil and making everything level. Two pick runs were done, one as f30, as the area was still bricky and hard but after we noticed the feature changing. A new feature was assigned, f60 accumulation bounded or associated with wall f41. The soil turned ashy, softer, with large amounts of animal bones and sherds present. In the northeast in line with f41 more bricks surfaced indicating that the wall runs into the east, under the baulk. Bricks are also present in k14 east; if this is the same wall then this is either a very large structure or else a wall delineating an area serving as a fence. C1 2008-08-02_S802LR.j lR removed the east section today C1 2008-08-05_S805LC.j lC Today, in the second half of the morning we removed the pebble floor f50 and we found a layer f80 with other small pebbles and sherds that could be another pavement or a sort of preparation for the pebble floor above. Below the pebble floor f50 there was also a soft accumulation f81. Tomorrow we will clarify the relationship between f80, f81 and the brick fall f30 just to the north of them. C1 2008-08-06_S806LR.j lR removed the cobblestone pavement f50 finding another pavement f80 below and possible drain f83. C1 2008-08-07_S809LR.j lR In k13 and k14, we removed f60 and f62, two similar accumulations gray in color and full of animal bones and pottery. C1 2008-08-09_S809LR.j lR In k13, f60 was excavated and fully removed this morning. Underneath f60 the soil shifted from ashy and full of animal bones to light gray, compact, with several brick lines, very similar to what was found at the same elevation in k14, f87. Another 10 cm was removed from this feature, f89, with several bricks found in the north next to f60. C1 2008-08-18_S818lR.j lR In k13, we excavated f89, removing 5 cm, coming down on a large stone. C1 2008-08-23_S823LC.j lC After the removal of the east baulk of k13 and with the discovery of the wall f143, today we continued to remove f89 in k13 to clarify the wall f143 and the possible continuation of the stone pavement f93, also in k13. After the removing a portion of f89, we uncovered two red mud bricks in the south eastern corner of k13, possibly pertinent to the wall f97. To have a better understanding of the link between these two bricks, the big stone in k13, the wall f97 and the wall f143, we changed features and we removed the last 10 cms of accumulation f140, uncovering a series of stones labeled as a stone installation, f141. C1 2008-08-25_S825LC.j lC Today we removed the small portion of vertical bricks interpreted at the beginning as a wall parallel to the wall f92, constructed in the same technique. Below these bricks and the accumulation f140 we found more stones, but there isn't a clear link between the pavement f93 in k14 and the stone installation f141 in k13. It seems rather a quite irregular and non homogeneous structure. Between these new stones there is also a door socket, perhaps in situ, linked to a doorway, or in a secondary use inside the pavement. Then we remove part of f30 still covering the wall f41, looking for more bricks. C1 2008-08-26_S826LC.j lC Today we removed part of f60 just south of the big wall f41, uncovering a sloping hard compact layer, that could be interpreted as a kind of floor. Two small rooms were also discovered a4 and a6, both containing cobblestone pavements at roughly the same elevation. The rooms are very small and narrow, forming perhaps a corridor, passageway, or street rather than the floor of a room. A vertical mudbrick pile, referred often as the box structure, was found resting on one of the cobblestone pavements in a6. The function of these bricks remains unknown and likely formed a type of platform during the reuse occupation period or part of a wall collapse although it doesn't seem plausible that a wall would fall this nicely. An entrance into the street/corridor is visible in the east between walls f86 and f152 containing a small door socket on one of the corners. A35 2024-09-06_ZI906.j lC L_W23d5019 A20w0105 ZI906 lC k14.jpg B11 2008-08-13_S813YM2.j yM E of k12,N of k4 C1 2008-07-16_S716LR.j lR opened locus today and started by removing f19 topsoil with the strategy to see if the compact layer seen in the other loci extends into k14. The topsoil was thin in this locus, given that the tell slopes to the east so by the end of the day compact bricky material surfaced in the western half of the locus. C1 2008-07-20_S720LR.j lR f27 continues into k14 however the texture differs in the eastern area where by k15, the brick melt is no longer compact showing distinct fragments of bricks. Today after the section between k3 and k2 were removed, the locus was brushed to see if f27 dips down in the eastern side. Small patches were noted under a softer accumulation but do not form a solid compact surface that is visible in k13. C1 2008-07-22_S722LR.j lR f27 is found to the extreme west of the k14 but in the east, the compaction decreases turning more into brickfall with a patch of sherds surfacing in the eastern half. We decided to focus on the eastern half by first seeing if the sherds, f33, continued. 3cms was removed (f32) exposing a rectangular expansion of the sherds f33 running north to south with larger stones emerging at the southwestern end. The stones, f34 appear to be in line possibly forming a wall. C1 2008-07-23_S723LR.j lR removed f33 sherd pavement, finding more large stones underneath but does not extend to the north baulk. 8 cms was removed east of f34 stones to better define the area and see it the stones continue to go down. Tomorrow we will continue to excavate in this area. C1 2008-07-24_S725LR.j lR After the removal of f33, sherd pavement, the area to the east of the stones was excavated to see if the stones f34 continue to go down. They do not but another sherd pavement was found under f33. This pavement, f48, was found and excavated by lC, consisting of smaller sherds and pebbles than f33 but retaining the same width and length as the previous pavement. C1 2008-07-28_S728LR.j lR A few days ago we noticed vertical bricks, f56, in the southeast corner of k14 but unclear how far north they extend. These bricks are lower, approx 30 cm from f34 stones and run into the east baulk where they are visible in k15 labeled as f40. The northeast corner was excavated going south to see if more bricks were found eventually removing 20 cm and finding both vertical and horizontal bricks. In some areas the bricks appear to form a step but this is likely a result of excavation where the top eroded bricks are unclear and thus removed, eventually making steps to reach better bricks. C1 2008-07-29_S729LR.j lR Continued to remove f58, in 10 cm increments for a total of 20 cm starting from the south end working towards the north. Under f58, stones began to emerge labeled as f61. These are rounded cobbles, similar in size to f50 and f43 located in the western side of k14 south of f63 wall. Bricks also emerged north of f58, possibly part of f41 wall in k13 that extends east into k14. The soil around f61 was given a new feature number, f63, to distinguish between f58 compact layer and the matrix to the south and east of f61. C1 2008-08-02_S802LR.j lR The east section was photographed and drawn today C1 2008-08-02_S802LR.j lR the east section was drawn, photographed, and removed today. The soil under f34 and f48 was also excavated as f58, leveled to f62. The bricks from f56 were found under f34, extending to the west but are broken and difficult to understand. C1 2008-08-03_S803LC.j lC After breakfast we continued to remove the eastern baulk in order to link k14 and k15 and to check if the wall f63 in the north-eastern corner of k14 and the mud bricks of the western half of k15 are part of the same structure. The removal of the baulk allows us to work to the south towards the brick pile f56 constituted by numerous vertical bricks. C1 2008-08-04_S804LR.j lR finished removing the east section today and articulated the bricks from f56 which connect with f40 in k15. C1 2008-08-06_S806LR.j lR The box structure, f40 was cut into two section in order to understand it's construction. Sections on the north and east were cut, showing that both half and whole bricks were used in construction with the east section also showing the bricks stepped up between levels. Photographs will be taken tomorrow before more of the bricks are removed. The western end of the structure was also defined by removing 5 cm from f62 and coming towards the structure. C1 2008-08-07_S809LR.j lR In k13 and k14, we removed f60 and f62, two similar accumulations gray in color and full of animal bones and pottery. In k14, after f62 was removed, brick lines surfaced in the south and west of the loci, adjacent to f63 wall indicating another one room structure. C1 2008-08-09_S809LR.j lR In k14, f87 was excavated. This feature defines the space between three brick lines found yesterday in the north, east, and south. 20 cm was excavated from f87 then a patch of stones surfaced suggesting a possible pavement. Excavation was stopped, the area cleaned and photographs taken. Tomorrow we will excavate to see if the stones form a pavement. The eastern wall was defined this morning, finding a series of thin vertical oblique bricks forming the wall f92. These types of bricks are rather unusual, perhaps associated with a2 f40 box structure. C1 2008-08-10_S810LR2.j lR In k14, the accumulation above the pavement f93 was excavated revealing the cobblestones continuing in the area, stopping approximately 10 cm before the edge of the wall f97. In the western area, two bricks were found and an area of burning was noticed under these bricks. The area was closed to take photographs on the next work day. C1 2008-08-23_S823LC.j lC Today we continued to remove the vertical bricks of the a2. The bricks in this part of the structure are badly preserved, damaged from numerous animal holes. Some bricks seem to be broken already in antiquity and it is a little bit more difficult to find their faces. Removing these vertical bricks, the floor f132 continues to be uncovered. Probably tomorrow we will link the stones of the pavement with the stones found just to the north east of the a2 and that we assume are part of the same pavement. C1 2008-08-24_S824LC3.j lC Today we continued to remove the accumulation f140 on top of the stone installation f141, until we stopped to work in the field around 6 am because of a sudden sand storm. C1 2008-08-25_S825LC.j lC Today we continued to remove the vertical bricks f40 of the a2 and the accumulation below f131 uncovering the pavement f132. We left to the west about one third of the entire a2 to have a section showing the structure of the aggregate. So we uncovered more than 2/3 of the entire pavement f132, and tomorrow we will take photos of this arbitrary section and then we will finish to excavated the a2 looking for the relationship between the pavement f132, the wall f92 and the pavement f93, to better understanding the entire area. C1 2008-08-26_S826LC.j lC Today we finished to remove the vertical bricks of a2 uncovering almost completely the stone pavement f132, that appears to be surrounded by a narrow band of hard clay that also could be a layer under the stone pavement. Tomorrow we will define better its northern edge, still not really clear and the western edge, where today we left about 20 cm of f131 to excavate, so tomorrow we can have a clear understanding of the link between the two features and to define the east face of the wall f92, not easily recognizable. C1 2008-08-27_S827LC.j lC Today we finished to remove the accumulation f131, that we left yesterday, in order to see the relationship between the clay layer f150 part of the pavement f132 and the wall f92. It seems that this clay layer f150 is abutting the wall, so probably the wall f92 has been built at the same time of the pavement if not before. It is unclear whether the walls of a1 were built specifically for the pavement with some doubts due to its flimsy construction. It seems more plausible that f86 and f157, mudbrick walls in the west, are the original walls for the room with an entrance between the two walls leading into the corridor a6 then into a4. The construction of this pavement is similar to the stones from f108 pavement as they are larger in side and lying more regular or flatter than the pavements in a4, a6, and a5. C1 2008-07-19_S719LR.j lR finished removing the topsoil in the eastern half of the locus. f26 was assigned to the material below topsoil, this is a mixture of brick melt and abandonment material which is much softer, contains more inclusions than the brick melt. Towards the western side of the locus, the brick melt is compact but changes to the east. Several stones surfaced after the topsoil was removed, f25 along with fragments of a possible andiron in poor condition. The southwest corner was excavated 5cms to expose a possible pit cut associated with f25 however nothing was noted after excavation. C1 2008-07-22_S722LR.j lR removed 15cms from the entire locus today. In the morning brick lines were visible that resemble bricks lying vertical. More bricks, lying horizontally, were found in the northeast corner. A19's north section drawing was referenced, showing a mud brick wall running west to east in profile. This suggests that we possibly have the other wall, forming a possible structure. f26 was kept as the matrix covering these bricks until the area is better defined to assign separate feature numbers. C1 2008-07-23_S723LR.j lR Photographed the emerging bricks today then began to excavate the southeast corner to expose the brick faces. After 10cms was removed, nice brick faces were present showing a corner and two walls, one running east to west and the north to south. The accumulation bounded within the walls was assigned f39 and excavated another 10 cms. To the west, 3cms was removed to try to define the brick surfaces better. The area still remains unclear but more bricks are present, forming possibly another corner of a structure. C1 2008-07-24_S725LR.j lR today we focused on defining the outer surface of the brick structure. 20 cms was excavated west of f46 wall, and 20cms north of f38 wall. Brick faces were found on f38, no faces were noted on f46. The area to the west, around f40 proved difficult to understand. Brick lines were noticed in plan view however when excavated, no difference was noted between the matrix of the brick and the matrix around it. One option would be to remove several cms from the area to see if better brick lines emerge. C1 2008-07-28_S728LR.j lR continued excavating inside the small structure, assigning a new feature number, f55 for the accumulation as we are approximately 15 cm from the floor surface. The soil here contained large pieces of pottery, stone tools, broken bricks, along with a human tooth complete with the root (maxillary first incisor side to be determined). The area west and north of the structure were also excavated, f44 to expose the stones f57 below. It is unclear if the stones go under the bricks and form the floor of a1. C1 2008-08-05_S805LC.j lC Today we finished to excavate the accumulation f55 inside the room of a1 that was still in place because in the southern baulk of k15. We excavated it to clarify the presence or not of a wall closing in the south the room and to check where the floor f57 finishes. We left in place a nice grinding stone i23 to take a photo, but in a small sounding near the east section of k15 we found the end of the stone pavement and the presence of a mud brick wall f84, very badly preserved, that we will understand better in the next days. C1 2008-08-05_S805LR2.j lR excavated the south section, a continuation of the fill inside a1 in an attempt to find the southern wall. Nothing was found. West of a1, still in the southern section, a corner was found from bricks to the north, possibly from a wall under the south section of k14. C1 2010-09-23_U922LC1.j lC Today we started to remove the northern baulk looking for the edge of the vertical mudbrick installation and for the probable continuation of the stone pavement f57 excavated in 2008. For the first 5cm we did not collect the pottery because it is contaminated. C1 2010-09-07_U907YM.j yM Today we continued with the top soil removal in k23. Going down we came across some patches of stones. Tomorrow we will continue removing the top soil revealing the stones better. C1 2010-09-08_U907YM.j yM We proceeded in k23 by removing the last few cm of the top soil f155 to uncover the stones and the layer in which they are enbedded. We also found a small pebble and sherds pavement to which we gave a new feature number f162. C1 2010-09-12_U907YM.j yM We began today by cleaning the square for pictures, then we gave to the stones and the pavement feature numbers and we relayed them. The isolated stone f161, sitting in the topsoil was removed. After that we started removing f157 which is the natural accumulation layer that sourrounds the stones f159 and the wall f168. We will probably finish the removal tomorrow. C1 2010-09-14_U907YM.j yM Today we continued scraping the last few cms of f157 to reveal the brick melt like material under it that turned out to be a kind of floor similar to f169 but much more bad preserved. While we were scraping the eastern section of the square, next to wall f168 we found a pavement, probably the same as the pavement f165 in k24. To have a better understanding of the situation we decided to remove the eastern baulk of the square. We draw the section and we started to remove the topsoil f155. In the northern part of the baulk, under the top soil we found more stones which are the continuation of f164. Since we have the wall f168 in k23 that allines with the wall f171 in k24, we expected to find stones which are the continuation of the walls under the baulk, but we did not find any stones. While under the southern part of the baulk we found the continuation of the pavement f162 that goes further to the east and appears to be the same as f166 that was located on top of pavement f165 in the south west corner of k24. C1 2010-09-15_U915YM.j yM Today we started by cleaning the area to take pictures, then we removed the part of pavement f162 that was under the baulk after we took a relay. Under pavement f162 we found another pavement that seems to be the continuation of the pavement f165. Its probable that this pavement which is very nicely layed (f165), rests on top of another pavement. This assumption was made due to the fact that we see another one under it but we are still not sure what is the relationship between the two. We also removed the stone installations f160 and f158 exposing the feature underneath it which is f173 that we also started to remove all the way to the edge of the floor surface f169. While excavating this feature f173 in the northern part of the square, we uncovered the top part of an oval shaped clay installation. For the moment we don't know what could it be nor the relationship between this installation, the floor surface f169 and the accumulations around them. C1 2010-09-16_U916YM.j yM Today we took relays of features f168, f171, f164 and f169. Having that done we are able now to remove f169 which is the floor surface. Under this feature f169 we uncovered another hard surface to which we have not assigned a feature number yet. This hard surface seems to be going under the pavement f165. We will remove this pavement f165 in the next days then we can say for sure if the floor surface continues under it or not. C1 2010-09-18_U918LC.j lC Today we just removed part of the filling f178 of the installation f174 in order to understand its not yet clear function. Then we sraw the wall f168 and we started to remove the pavement f165, mostly extended in the east baulk of k23 and in k24 toward east. C1 2010-09-19_U919YM.j yM Today in this locus we only removed the wall f168. For the first 5cm we did not collect the pottery because its contaminated. C1 2010-09-07_U907YM.j yM We continued removing the top soil layer. Going down we found a stone installation in the north western corner. We also found a patch of stones in the western part of the loci. Tomorrow we will have a better understanding of the situation. C1 2010-09-08_U907YM.j yM Today we continued removing the top soil layer f156 and below it we found a sherds and pebble pavement, extending in the south western corner. C1 2010-09-12_U907YM.j yM We started today by leveling the square to take pictures then we assigned a feature number (f163) to the natural accumulation layer locatd in the eastern part of the square. Then we started to remove this natural accumulation, but probably we will finish tomorrow. C1 2010-09-13_U907YM.j yM today we continued going down in the eastern part of the square, still removing f163. We probably reached the bottom of that feature, so tomorrow we will clean and have a better look. C1 2010-09-14_U907YM.j yM Today we just cleaned for a while then we stopped working in this locus for the day. C1 2010-09-15_U915YM.j yM Today we started working in this square by removing the pavement f166, then we dug a little in the north eastern part of the square, east of the stone installation f164, where we uncovered a pebble pavement to which we have not assigned a feature number yet. C1 2010-09-18_U918LC.j lC Today we removed the pavement f164 uncovering the slooping floor f179 and we saw that the pavement is going underneath the wall f171. The pavement f164 and the wall f171 were drawn so tomorrow we will be able to remove them. C1 2010-09-19_U919YM.j yM Today we removed the wall f171 under which we found an accumulation f182, that lays on top of the pavement f165, that continued under wall f171 and partially under the stone installation f164. We also removed f164 to find underneath the same accumulation layer f182 that we found under f171. As for the continuation of the pavement f165, we removed it exposing the floor surface under it f183 which is the same as f179, but only in a different square k24, there for we gave it a new number and then removed it. Doing this we uncovered the remaining part of f163 that we started removing but did not finish yet. C1 2010-09-20_U920YM.j yM Today we continued removing the natural accumulation layer f163 in the west part of the locus. When we finished removing this feature in this part we continued removing it from the rest of the square. By removing this layer we exposed the hard layer f186. C1 2010-09-21_U921YM.j yM Today we exposed the floor surface f192 by scraping what was left of f186 . This feature f192 was cut by a pit f194, so we removed the fill inside f193. the first layer of the fill was highly compacted, hard and bricky. We dug the fill all the way to what we presume is the bottom of the pit, that is plastered with a bakaya layer. C1 2010-09-22_U922LC1.j lC Today we drawn the north section and then we removed the baulk to have a wide view of the area and to take a nice picture showing the layer f192 and f197. C1 2010-09-23_U922LC1.j lC Today we removed the eastern baulk to look for the upper part of the possible wall running north to south and bonded to ^wall1. Removing this baulk we also expect to find the western adge of the big pit f189. C1 2010-09-25_U927YM2.j yM Today we removed the floor surface f192 that over lays f172, to expose f172 in order to be able to remove it to uncover ^wall1 that is probably underneath it. C1 2010-09-26_U927YM2.j yM The aim for today in this locus was to expose the continuation of ^wall1 under f172, so we removed f172 in the northern part of the square, while doing this we came across a different layer f205, that we removed as well, but we were not able to understand the situation well and we were not able to see any bricks clearly in the western part. While in the eastern part we were able to see the continuation of the ^wall1, and other bricks that form a corner with ^wall1 and continues to the north forming a wall that bond with ^wall1. The area was leveled and cleaned. C1 2010-09-14_U907YM.j yM Today we opened this square that we began excavating in MZ21. We started by removing the top soil layer f167 then the natural accumulation layer f170 that was under it. We did not finish the removal yet, we will continue tomorrow. C1 2010-09-15_U915YM.j yM Today we continued removing the natural accumulation layer f170 exposing the bricky materials underneath it in the western part of the locus, that could be the wall that bonds with the ^wall1. C1 2010-09-16_U916YM.j yM Today we started by cleaning the square well, then we removed the rest of f170 in the south western corner of the locus. After that we proceeded by removing the accumulation layer f177. By removing this feature we uncovered some mud bricks. We are assuming that those mud bricks are a wall, but we can only be sure by further excavating in that square. C1 2010-09-18_U918LC.j lC Finished to remove the natural ashy accumulation f177 we uncovered some mudbricks. We are not yet sure if they belong to clear structures, but seem possible that they can be part of at least three different walls running in different directions and constituted of vertical or flat mudbricks. Then we assigned a new number to the ashy accumulation f180 because we are already deeper then the crests of possible walls, so it could be a filling inside a room or a structure. C1 2010-09-19_U919YM.j yM Today we removed f175 to try and expose the bricks better. It seems that we have in the eastern part of the square a line of bricks against which there are vertical bricks. While in the south western part of the locus, next to the bricks, we have what seems to be the fill of a pit. We have not assigned any feature numbers to these components yet, we will wait to understand the situation better. C1 2010-09-20_U920YM.j yM Today we started by removing the fill of the pit f180 west of the vertical bricks f191. The pit f189 seems to cut the mud brick wall f188. while in the north eastern part of the locus we started removing the brick fall layer f184 uncovering the stone pavement underneath it f190. C1 2010-09-21_U921YM.j yM We started by cleaning to take pictures, then we continued removing the brick fall layer f184 uncovering the stone pavement f190. In the same time in the south western part of the locus we continued removing the fill of the pit f180 until we reached the bottom surface. C1 2010-09-25_U927YM2.j yM Today we removed f196 exposing the bricks under it. C1 2010-09-26_U927YM2.j yM We decided to remove the southern part of f191, where we thought there are no more vertical bricks, in order to uncored the continuation of pavement f190 that lays under f191, but as we proceeded we found some more vertical bricks, so we stoped. The stratigraphy was reconstructed using old notes and drawings for k101 excluding the easternmost locus since it was excavated all the way down to phase 2. The features that were present were incorporated into A20, given new feature numbers and re-described. No attempts were made to correlate earlier accumulations above these features to A20. k101 was the most interesting and deepest excavation area consisting of a large one room structure, a5, flanked by a stone courtyard to the west f108. The room was constructed of mudbrick walls with the walls from a1 structure abutting the walls of a5. A thin vertical brick wall was found along the western edge of a5 forming presumably an inner wall. The inside of a5 proved strange, with vertical bricks clustered together found inside followed by a stone installation and bricks in the northwestern corner. The stone installation f136 resembles an outline or cyst type tomb but as to why this is inside a room in unclear. The entrance to the structure is also unknown presumably in the south. The area is quite disturbed because it is close to the section of A19k98 and it has been exposed for some years. C1 2008-08-10_S810LR2.j lR In k101, attempted to find a good surface for f94 by first removing the softer fill around the broken top bricks but this only showed a jumble of collapsed and broken bricks. We then cut the top layer, removing 10 cm to see if better bricks surfaced. Another 10 cm was removed, concluding that f94 is not a wall. C1 2008-08-14_S816LR.j lR Excavated in k101, removing the eastern baulk to connect the wall f115 to f85 and the walls to the east, f116 (from A19). Wall f115 was noted as being fully constructed with vertical bricks slightly at an oblique angle alongside horizontal bricks f109, at a lower elevation. The vertical bricks f115 are in line with f46 wall from a1. C1 2008-08-16_S816LR.j lR In k101, the area south of a2 was excavated, continuing to remove f94. This feature has been redefined as brickfall and not a wall. The east baulk was continued from S814, removing another 10 cm today exposing several vertical brick faces. The southern area, bricks are also present, likely the cross wall enclosing f116, f115, of a larger one room structure. C1 2008-08-17_S817LC.j lC Today we continued to remove the baulk between our k101 and the old A19k99, looking for the continuation of the vertical mud brick wall f115. After removing f119, considered as a fill inside the structure, we found more vertical bricks just above the bricks already exposed, in the northern part of the baulk. Towards the west we didn't find more bricks and tomorrow we will continue to excavate f119. In the northern part of k101 we continued to remove the brickfall f94 in order to find a good face of wall f84 that seems to continue towards the west. At the beginning we thought that the mud bricks belonged to structure a2, but after rethinking the situation we realized that the bricks are horizontal (not vertical like a2) and thus pertinent to the wall f84. So it seems that the structure a2 abuts in part the wall, but the situation is still unclear. While cleaning the north sections, looking for the face of the wall f84, we found some courses of mud bricks above two courses of stones that could be the foundation of the wall, but only in the eastern part of the wall for about 100 cms in length. Towards the west only three courses of bricks are preserved and they seem to be lying above different layers of accumulation, ashy layer and red/orange soil, maybe bricky or burnt material. In the western section of the k101 we found some hard gray bricks, forming probably a wall, preserved for at least three courses. The sure presence of the wall and its relationship with the other features are still to be checked. Almost at the end of the morning in the north-western corner of k101, below the brown soil of f94, a compact gray soil was uncovered, maybe bricky material, that tomorrow we will uncover. C1 2008-08-17_S818lR.j lR In k101, we continued to remove the east section which we are very close to the level of the walls f115 and f85. Vertical bricks were found in the southern end of the baulk, oriented east to west and look very similar to the bricks that f115 is constructed but at a higher elevation (one course higher). These are only 4 bricks with no more vertical bricks found in section. The section on the eastern face was scraped well today, showing faint lines of vertical faces as well in section. It is unclear if f115 forms the cross wall closing the structure to the east, f116, or if f109 wall closes the structure. f116 is constructed of horizontal bricks which would suggest that the cross wall would also be horizontal bricks. f109 are horizontal, so if this is the case then why is a wall made of vertical bricks immediately east of the outer wall. Perhaps f115 forms a bench. C1 2008-08-18_S818lR.j lR In k101, another 15 cm was removed from the north section, finding a wall f126 running west to east. Wall f125 was further defined, this wall is located in the western edge of k101 running north to south, possibly the cross wall for f126. Wall f127 appears to abut f40 on the southern end; these are a series of horizontal bricks that go down several courses then ends approximately 15 cm then f126 wall emerges underneath. At first we assumed that wall f84 continued to run west, so that f127 and f84 was the same wall. This however is not the case. While removing f120, stones emerged, west of f85 wall. These stones continue to go down; at the moment are 3 stones deep but stop to the west. A thick vertical line is also visible where the stones end which would then make f84 a discrete wall with stone foundations at its western edge and another wall, f127 built in the west that abuts f84. C1 2008-08-19_S818lR.j lR Today, k101 was open and A18 cleaned for photographs. This morning the north section of k101 was drawn. This section is not the true north section of k101, it is actually our cut into k14 but shows nicely the wall f127 which we plan to remove today. After the section was drawn we then photographed the section, including overhead, oblique, and direct north views. The wall was removed in section, beginning in the eastern area working west, leaving a small section to see the horizontal bricks from two sides. We then proceeded to continue removing the bricks to west, then cleaned out the section and photographed it again. What was in view was bricky material sitting on a nice row of horizontal bricks then several centimeters below, a layer of reddish fine clay appearing similar in shape and size to bricks but much softer than brick. Another layer was removed, moving north and this time removing f40 vertical bricks to expose another layer of the horizontal bricks behind. In the west, more stones surfaced to the north, in line with the stones from wall f125. It is unclear if these stones continue north, if so then a2 was built over f125 wall. One course of bricks was removed by accident from f126 wall but they continue below and rearticulated. Wall f126 contains many phytolith inclusions in the bricks mixed with elongated splinters of charcoal. We also cleaned the west and south sections of k101 or A19k98 for two reasons; first the sections are rather unsteady and dangerous from years of weathering and were cut back to make them safer and secondly, to cut a new surface and expose fresh bricks and colors. The entire day was spent cutting these two sections back then we proceeded to clean up the area east of the baulk near f116. I assumed that the backfill would be shallow but after working inside, the soil is deeper coming down on plastic around 20 cm deep. Tomorrow we will continue to remove the backfill and expose the floor surface from inside the structure, a5. C1 2008-08-23_S823LC.j lC Today we continued to remove f119 south and north to the vertical bricks f137. In the northern half we uncovered part of a nice floor; f142, that we will finish to uncover tomorrow. In the southern half we preceded more slowly because of the presence of some mud bricks and we have to check if they are simply broken bricks from a brickfall or some kind of installations. At the end of the morning a skull of a small animal was found just next to the southern section of k101. C1 2008-08-24_S824LC3.j lC We started to clean the square from the dirt arrived during the night because of the sand storm. lR and lC also started to remove other vertical bricks of the a2 but after one hour of work we stopped due to the storm and we went to work in the house. C1 2008-08-25_S825LC.j lC today we removed the accumulation f120, south of the mud brick wall f126, uncovering the floor type c f144. Tomorrow we will take photos of f144 and then we will excavate the floor trying to go down to the level of the stone pavement f108, to understand the link between it and the pavement f132. In the south of the locus we removed the vertical bricks f137 uncovering more oblique bricks belonging to the f138. We also continued to remove f119 in the southern part of k101 between f115 and f138. C1 2008-08-26_S826LC.j lC Today we concentrated our efforts in k101. Some photos were taken, then we removed the floor f144 and the accumulation underneath it f145. About 10 cm above the pavement f108 we made a new feature for the accumulation right above the pavement. Removing this f146, we uncovered other stones belonging to the pavement, but also a strange row of mud bricks, just 10 cm on top of the pavement that seems to be slightly semicircular in shape. This row is constituted by two rows of thin vertical bricks with in the middle flat small bricks for a total thickness of about 40 cm. Then in order to have a clear face for the mud brick wall, f126, we removed some broken bricks we thought to be part of the wall, but that later revealed just as fallen broken bricks so we removed about 40 cm of accumulation f120 south to the wall f126 that now appears to be closer to the north section of k101. In the southern part of k101 we finished to uncover the floor f142 removing the accumulation f119 between the f138, the wall f115 and the south baulk. Then we started to remove part of this floor in its northern half in order to reach the level of the stones f148 inside a5. C1 2008-08-27_S827LC.j lC Today we removed the mud brick wall f149 found yesterday, in order to see if the stones of the pavement f108 were continuing toward north. If they were continuing underneath the wall f126 or the layers below the pavement f132, it means that the pavements f132 and f108 were not contemporary, with the f108 earlier. But since the stones are stopping next to some mud bricks, it is still possible that the two pavements are contemporary with a stepped organization of the structures. In the southern part we finished to remove the accumulation f119 next to the oblique mud brick f138 uncovering the floor f142. Just north to it we finished to remove the accumulation f147 uncovering the stone installation f148, before only in part visible and some mud bricks, maybe belonging to a wall, f151.
