B11 2005-08-04_P823GM2.j rE formerly J2 k33 but not excavated in season MZ18
B11 2006-09-19_Q918EI4.j ei expected location of revetment wall.
C1 2006-08-12_Q812VE2.j vVE The excavation of k1 in J3 had already begun in 2004 during MZ17(2004-O) as a locus of J2. At the moment I am still unable to equate my feature assignments to those of J2, because the J2 MZ17 files are not yet accessible. Still visible are several features that had been exposed during the previous campaigns: f501, f502, f503, f504, f505, f506, f507, f508, f509, f510, f511. See v500 for the state of preservation of k01 at the start of this season. We left all of these features standing and started to excavate the surface of k01. This deposit is f500 and the sections seem to indicate that this deposit is a continuation of what was lying on top of it. The stones of features f502, f503, f504, f505, f506, f507, f508, f509, f510 and f511 are resting on and embedded in this deposit, f500. All these stones together constitute aggregate a500.
C1 2006-08-13_Q813VE.j vVE In the eastern half of k1 we excavated f500 to give this locus a more level surface. In the north a somewhat harder surface was encountered. It was a natural surface and might have been caused by the effects of the winter precipitation during the past year. It does not constitute a clear break in this natural deposit because it did not extend very far from the Northern baulk, because it was not very hard and because the deposit underneath seems to be the same as above it. The entire locus was cleaned and dM took v502, v503 and v503a of f501 and a500 respectively. f501 was then removed.
C1 2006-08-14_Q814VE.j vVE Feature f517 was excavated today. It was the column of deposits that had been left standing to preserve f501. Feature f500 was excavated in the Western half of k01. Several new features had been found in the excavations yesterday and were assigned feature numbers today: f519, f520 and f521. These features were relayed today.
C1 2006-08-15_Q815VE.j vVE Several large boulders were assigned feature numbers today. f525, f526, f527 and f528 were found while excavating f500 today, while f529 and f530 were excavated yesterday but are so enveloped by the North baulk that they had not yet been assigned feature numbers yesterday. After excavating f500 we found a natural hard surface that seemed to be sloping slightly downwards towards the south.
C1 2006-08-21_Q821VE.j vVE We started to remove the Northern baulk of k01. f523 was the top soil (nothing was collected) and f558 the underlying natural accumulation. This underlying accumulation had already been excavated in the rest of the locus during one of the previous campaigns as part of J2. After having removed f558 we reached f500 which was also excavated.
C1 2006-08-26_Q826VE.j vVE Yesterday dM had taken the overview pictures of the situation where the lower steps of the second apron f532 and f556 had been covered by accumulations and several large boulders of the second apron had moved from their original position. With those pictures taken we were now able to remove several of those dislocated boulders that make up a500. Before the removal of f503, f504, f505, f506, f507, f508 and f511, the Area designation (J3) and their respective feature numbers were written on the boulders with a permanent marker. While removing the deposits on which these boulders had been resting a new dislocated boulder f567 was uncovered. We started to removing the natural accumulation f565 that covered the lower part of the second apron f532. In this deposit we found bronze item i500 stuck between several boulders. After excavating f565 we reached a naturally compacted surface f566 which we also started to excavate.
C1 2006-08-27_Q827VE.j vVE The series of naturally compacted floors f566 was removed. On top of where the revetment wall should be there appeared a new naturally compacted floor which is the continuation in this area of f534. Immediately north of this there had appeared more large boulders and the deposit underneath f566 there was soft, crumbly, reddish dark brown clay containing many very small pebbles and a little bit of calcite: this seems to be washed down baqaya.
C1 2006-08-28_Q828VE1.j vVE The deposits in front of the top of the revetment wall were excavated today: the remains of f534 in the Southern half of k1 and the underlying f571 in all of k1. Several new large boulders were uncovered today and these must belong to the top of the revetmet wall.
C1 2006-08-29_Q829VE3.j vVE At first we continued to excavate f571 in all of k01, but then we excavated this natural deposit only in the northern half of k01. There the underlying deposit f572 did not differ much from f571 but seemed to be a little bit lighter, softer and more crumbly.
C1 2006-08-30_Q830VE1.j vVE We continued to excavate the Northern half of k1 in front of the revetment wall f569. The boulder f575 and the small boulder 579 next to it were uncovered. Under the natural deposit of f572 there appeared a softer black ashy deposit f576. After having removed these ashes we found again a reddish brown deposit f578. We have removed the pebbles of f521 and the large boulder f519. We relayed the large boulders f525, f527, f528 and f574 which is a very large boulder that had appeared yesterday already in the Southern section.
C1 2006-08-31_Q831VE.j vVE The stones f575 and f579 were removed today and then excavation continued in the Northern half of k1. At the end of one pick run the tops of five boulders became visible. These seem to lie in line in front of the revetment wall f569. To make sense of these stones we need to expose a larger area and therefore we continued to excavate also the Southern half of k1.

B11 2006-08-12_Q812VE2.j vVE At the western edge of k2 starts the old trench in B6, excavated by a German team from Tuebingen University. The trench runs from West to East but has a different orientation than the J3 grid. As the trench progresses East it also runs more to the North. The baulk walls have in some places caved in slightly, but are generally in reasonable condition. It now has approximately the following dimensions: 260 x 880 cm.
B11 2006-09-19_Q918EI4.j ei W-half of German Trench(BA) and expected location of second apron.
C1 2006-08-12_Q812VE2.j vVE Today a picture, v501, was taken of this area and of the state of preservation of the German trench in B6. Then a lot of backfill was excavated, the sherds collected and counted: three base sherds, 5 rims and 53 body sherds had been found. Not all dirt could be removed but this will be completed tomorrow morning.
C1 2006-08-13_Q813VE.j vVE We cleaned the South section of the German trench B6 by cutting it back approximately 5 cm. The deposit that was removed in this proces was defined as f512. Then we proceeded to excavate the Northwestern corner of k2 (f514 and f513) and just to the west of German trench B6 (f515 and f516). These areas were excavated in order to overlay the orientation of our grid on the B6 trench. However, because our surveyor, bP could not yet survey the markers for k2 that are missing (ie. the Eastern markers and those markers that define the baulks) we proceeded very cautiously.
C1 2006-08-14_Q814VE.j vVE Feature f513 and f516 were excavated to the level of the German trench B6 and these features were then closed. f518 is the top soil of the part of k2 that lies South of trench B6. f518 was removed today.
C1 2006-08-15_Q815VE.j vVE We started to excavate the natural accumulation f522 in the southern half of k2. We closed it after excavating several (big) pick runs in this feature. f533 is the natural accumulation that lies under f522 and is a continuation of this feature. f533 was not excavated today. Features f524 and f531 were assigned to stones that had fallen down northwards (perhaps recently) from the second apron f532.
C1 2006-08-16_Q816VE.j vVE Excavation continued in f533 where we reached the elevation of the top of the stones of the second apron. A new feature will be assigned to these deposits tomorrow. f535 was started in the northern part: both the bottom of the German trench B6 in BA and the bottom of f513.
C1 2006-08-17_Q817VE.j vVE We continued to excavate the deposit that lie south of f532 and cover it. By accident this area was assigned f535 today, but f535 was the deposit to the north of f532. Therefore the q-lot q526 was reassigned to f557. We further uncovered the very large boulder f543 and relayed it.
C1 2006-08-19_Q819VE1.j vVE We excavated f557 to further expose f532. Several lines of stones have now been uncovered but the expected steps are not present. Instead of the steps, a slightly sloping surface of boulders became visible. The downward slope of these stones is also not nearly as steep as we expected. At the bottom of f557 we found a natural compacted floor surface f566.
C1 2006-08-22_Q822VE.j vVE A small remainder of f535 (bottom of the german trench BA) was excavated. The correct marker points defining the borders of k2 had not been known for a long time and therefore this small area of f535 remained in the NE corner of k1.

C1 2005-09-04_P904JW.j jW Relayed a line of large stones, f75, in the southwest corner of the locus in preparation for their removal, after photographing, tomorrow. Because they overhang parts of k104 and k105 where we are making a deep sounding to inspect the north face of the monumental wall, f11, we are removing them to enhance the safety of work there.
C1 2005-09-06_P906JW.j jW Along the west edge of the locus we began to remove the accumulation, f38, that was below the N-S line of stones, f75, to trace the top bakhia surface of the terrace, f50, downslope to the monumental wall, f11. In the process we uncovered two more large stones, f78, and f79 that had underlain f75. These stones were relayed and photographed in anticipation of removal on P907.

C1 2006-08-12_Q819JW1.j jW Began to to excavate the entire locus beginning with topsoil, f97, and the accumulation beneath, f100, in which sits a conglomerate of stones and laminar soil, f101, which was also removed.
C1 2006-08-13_Q819JW.j jW Continued to excavate the entire locus below the topsoil, f97, and the accumulation beneath, f100, in which sits a conglomerate of stones and laminar soil, f101. The next layer, f104, shows the influence of water (laminar texture) and is uniform, appearing to follow the slope of the surface. The next accumulation, f107, was of uniform fine grains, about 30 cm deep and also followed the slope of the tell surface.
C1 2006-08-16_Q818JW2.j jW While cleaning along the edge of the north baulk on Q814, a layer of baqaya, f109, was found. Tracing it to the south became the primary objective of today's excavation, because of its similarity to the baqaya surface of f50 in k12. We excavated a narrow trench along the E baulk to trace f109 to the south. We then used the profile to determine that there were three thin layers of accumultion covering f109 to the west, which were then removed. During removal, we noticed a dark patch of soft soil in the SW corner, f122.
C1 2006-08-16_Q818JW8.j jW Removed the last of accumulation f107 and the floating limestone block, f110, within. Began excavating from north to south and immediately found baqaya, f109, along the northern baulk. Under accumulation f107, was a thin layer of accumulation, f111, in the northern third of the locus and a more extensive layer to the south, f114. A large floating limestone block, f112, can be seen in the south baulk, at the approximate level of accumulation, f107.
C1 2006-08-31_Q831RE.j rE Swar and so'od started the day with removing f147, the accumulation under the stones of a4. Under this feature we found f209, which was very hard and looks like the mud glacis, but the difference is that it is not sloping down. We stopped there until we take a picture and study this feature, and what is the connection between it and the mud glacis and the baqaya.

B11 2005-08-04_P823GM2.j rE set by surveyor but not excavated in season MZ18
C1 2006-08-21_Q821JW1.j jW Continued to excavate below the topsoil in the north half of the locus, preserving a 40cm-wide baulk along the south edge to protect the north section of k108, immediately to the south. There are two distinct features visible: to the east is an accumulation with a hard surface, f166; to the west is an accumulation with areas of laminations, f165. Both were removed, leaving a uniform, softer brown accumulation, f167, throughout the locus. At the end of the day, we exposed another soft and more red accumulation, f168.
C1 2006-08-22_Q822JW2.j jW Continued to excavate throughout the north half of the locus. Removed accumulation f168, in which sat a large limestone block f169, which was left in place. Underneath f168 was a packed earth floor with pebbles and sherds laying flat throughout. Designated this floor as f173, and the accumulation above it, f168 as a living accumulation.
C1 2006-08-23_Q823JW3.j jW We removed north baulk to the exavated level of accumulation f147 in k23. We measured the elevations of the floor, f170, and the top and bottom of the tannur in the locus adjacent to the east, k12. The floor was at elevation 9200, the tannur top at 9268, and the bottom at 9213. This establishes a tentative stratigraphic equality between the two. Because the floor was not recognized when the locus directly to the south, k108, was being excavated. we cannot establish a more definite link.
C1 2006-08-24_Q824RE.j rE Swar and So'd removed the north baulk of k108 in order to have a full view for the floor, f173, under it.
C1 2006-08-26_Q826JW.j jW After drawing and photographing the north part of the east baulk, we began to remove it.
C1 2006-08-27_Q827JW.j jW removed the east baulk of the locus.
C99 2006-08-27_Q827JW.j jW As we were establishing the relationship between the packed mud glacis, f152 and the baqaya glacis, f109, we noticed an apparent discontinuity in the baqaya in the far northeast corner of the locus. A few days earlier, while excavavating with the big pick in the same place, we found an apparently isolated, broken, reddish brick. During this exploration of the baqaya we noticed in the baulk a brick, f192 that abutted the baqaya, indicating that there may have been a structure either of brick or with a brick foundation at this location.

H99 2006-08-27_Q827JW.j jW In order to help determine whether floor f173 overlaid or was a part of the packed mud glacis, f152, of the temple mound, we took elevations at each corner and the middle. All elevations were within two centimeters of 9197. This and the presence of sherds that were laying flat suggest that the surface was a floor separate from the mud glacis. However, gB looked at the surface of both and determined that they were formed from the same material. This suggests that they were deposited at the same time and were parts of a single feature. jW noticed that the sherds in the glacis to the north of the floor were randomly oriented while the sherds of f173 were laying flat. This does not mean that the surfaces were of differing strata, but rather that people probaly walked on the flat part. Therefore the better interpretation is that f173 and f152 are part of the same glacis packing, were deposited at the same time, but served somewhat different functions.
H99 2006-08-27_Q827JW.j jW Therefore it is clear that the packed mud glacis was added atop the baqaya glacis at a later date.
I99 2006-08-27_Q827JW.j jW When we reached the gray accumulation in k22, f111, we questioned the relationship among this feature, the packed mud glacis, f152 and the baqaya glacis, f109. As we traced f109 from k13 to k23 we found that the baqaya extended beneath the packed mud. Furthermore, f111, previously assumed to be an ashy accumulatiom covering the baqaya, was in fact a continuation of the packed mud to the east.

B11 2005-08-04_P823GM2.j rE set by surveyor but not excavated in season MZ18
C1 2006-08-17_Q818JW4.j jW Began removing the temporary south baulk that was established for the safety of workmen and to protect the exposed layer of baqaya to the south in k12. As we were removing accumulation f107, we observed an E-W line of large limestone blocks, a4. gB believes that they may have been a part of a late addition to the temple mound, perhaps made late in the Mittani period. We decided for the moment to leave them on a pedestal until the locus to the east, k23 was sufficiently excavated to confirm or deny our hypothesis. To the east of the easternmost stone in a4, we fully excavated the baulk to determine the relationship between the baqaya surface in k12, f50, to the baqaya surface in this locus, f109. Although jW had anticipated that f109 would be a later addition, the surfaces merged at the south edge of the south baulk.
C1 2006-08-17_Q818JW5.j jW Began to excavate the locus. Topsoil contained 8 body and no rim or base sherds. All were inspected, found to be of indeterminent period, and discarded. In the NE corner, just under the topsoil was a hard surface of soil with a burn mark in the center, f136. As we excavated a bit further, there was a lens of laminations, f138, in the NE quadrant, in which sat a ring of stones in a soil matrix, f142, similar to f101 in the adjacent locus to the east, k13. A positive link can only be established upon excavation of the E baulk. Under the topsoil in the west and south and the laminations in the east was a relatively thin layer of natural accumulation, f140, underwhich there was another layer of natural accumulation, f141.
C1 2006-08-19_Q819JW2.j jW Continued to excavate accumulation f141, which contains broad regions of laminations with scattered soft pockets. Exposed the full extent of the stone and laminar soil installation, f142. Photographed and removed. Under f141 was a softer, more consistent accumulation, f146, which could be easily removed with a shovel without picking. At the end of the day we leveled and cleaned, discovering a baqaha-like surface along the north edge, then to the south a thin layer of gray ash of a width of one meter running E-W, then a layer of browish soil which covered the south half of the locus.
C1 2006-08-23_Q823JW3.j jW We began to carefully excavate accumulation, f151, in k23 from north to south to find the north limit of floor surface, f173, found in the north part of k22. We found that what we first identified as a thin ashy lens in the north half of the locus, f150, was actually a layer of ashy accumulation covering most of the locus to a depth of 10cm or more. It was under accumulation, f151, and above the the temple mound surface packing, f152. With regards to the relationship between the baqaya packing in k13, f109; in k12, f50; and the packing in k23, f152; relative elevations indicate that f152 in k23 is 16cm lower than f109 in k13. Furthermore, although k109 is packed baqaya, k152 is packed mud. We will carefully remove the east bulk to establish the precise relationship between k107 and k152.
C1 2006-08-26_Q826JW.j jW Finished excavating a wedge-shaped section of accumulation, f150, in the southwest corner which covers packing, f152, which extend through the entire locus. It appears that what we call a floor surface, f173, in k22, either abuts the mud packing or is a continuation of it to the south. Adding to the possibilities, today we discovered a packed mud surface in k109, immediately to the southwest. Tomorrow we will compare and analyze all three features. After photographing and drawing, we began to remove the east baulk.
C1 2006-08-30_Q830RE.j rE We removed the 4 large limestones, which formed the western part of insstelation a4.
C1 2006-09-11_Q911JW1.j jW As we began to remove the packed mud, f152 that covered the mud glacis, f123 we began to see several red bricks upon which was what appeared to be a large pot smash. We designated the matrix surrounding the sherds f252, and began to remove it and the sherds. Almost immediately we recovered a seal impression, followed by a number of others, all under the ceramic. To the south of the bricks was an area of lamination in the general shape of a rectangularly-cut pit.
C1 2006-09-12_Q912JW.j jW Today we excavated the contents of pit, a10, and dug it, pit a5, and pit a6 to a depth of about one meter to sample the contents of the packed fill beneath the baqaya layer, f109, f50. Each yielded Late Chalcolithic sherds similar to those found in the deep sounding beneath f50 in the typological column, k104 and k105, excavated near the monumental wall, f11, in season MZ18 (2005-P). jW was hopeful that pit a10 would contain a burial, but that was not the case - the fill was virtually clean and soft and contained but few sherds.
C1 2006-09-13_Q913JW.j jW We completed the removal of accumulation, f252 and found an E-W line of red bricks, f215, along the north baulk. To the west they were in a single layer, but to the east they seemed to be in two layers. The top bricks had been moved out of place and there was a N-S line of smaller bricks near pit a6. The E-W line of bricks probably capped the baqaya glacis, f109, but the function of the bricks near the pit cannot be determined because they are too eroded.
C2 2006-08-26_Q826JW.j jW We will excavate carefully the baulk in order to trace the transition from the baqaya surface

H99 2006-09-11_Q911JW1.j jW A preliminary analysis of the seal impressions indicates that they were of the Uruk period, heretofore not found at Mozan. The sherds atop the seal impressions were assessed by mKB to be Late Chalcolithic. The bricks, f28 , covered the baqaya glacis, f109, and abutted the mud glacis, f123. We presume that since generally red bricks deteriorate rapidly, they were laid at the same time as the mud glacis, f123, Phase 11. The laminations, f , covered the fill of a pit, a10, which was dug into both the mud glacis and baqaya glacis. The fill was very clean, only containing a few sherds. The most likely explanation for the stratigraphic inversion is that the pit was dug in Phase 6, into packed fills (which came from elsewhere on or near the tell) below the baqaya. These fills have consistently been dated to the Late Chalcolithic, Phase 1 or earlier. Material from digging the pit was dumped atop the brick surface of the mound and was covered quickly by loess, so that it stayed in place.

C1 2006-08-22_Q822RE.j rE Today Mohammad and Ebrahim started the excavation on the north half of k31. In k31 there were f170 the topsoil, and f171 which was brown, chunky, and lamination accumulation, with a few sherds of pottery, and small pebbles. Under this feature was f174, an installation with 6-7 different size of stones at the same level.
C1 2006-08-24_Q824RE.j rE We removed the north baulk which consisted of 4 features. After removing the baulk we have got a new k109 which formed of the north half of k31 and the south half of k32. We removed the baulk in order to have a full view of the floating stones on J1 and the north section behind it.

I99 2007-08-16_R816JW.j jW This locus was one of four in an E-W line to the south of the expected location of the south face of revetment wall, f11. These loci were excavated to provide a good sight line to the wall, glacis and temple. They were excavated to a depth of about one meter as half squares with an inward sloping south baulk. This locus was the last to be excavated because it was where we parked the wagons that carried away the back dirt brought up from deeper loci by the shaffat. Due to the imminent arrival of the Minister of Culture, excavation of k92 was rushed and relatively poorly documented. No photographs were taken, and only the east baulk was drawn, w32. However, little was sacrificed because the features were natural accumulations deposited after abandonment across the entire temple plaza and containd almost no cultural material. The photographs and drawings of adjacent loci, k91, k92, and k11 provide adequate details for stratigraphic analysis of this locus.

C1 2005-08-17_P817JW.j jW In removing accumulation, f38, Swar encountered a large surface of hard-packed bakhia, a local virgin soil which is red with white inclusions. Designated f50, preliminary analysis indicates that it may be the surface of a monumantal terrace that led upward from the boundary wall, f11, to the BA Early Dynastic IIIb temple.
C1 2005-09-03_P903JW.j jW Relayed, re-photographed, and removed three large stones, f66, f67, and f68, which were overhanging the typological column k104 and endangering the workmen. All were founded on brown soil.

C1 2005-08-24_P824JW2.j jW We continued to excavate the brown loess, f53, under the topsoil. Then, after the baulks were trimmed, we noticed a subtle color and texture change had occurred that may have marked an earlier transition to the next layer, a series of laminations, f56.
C1 2005-08-25_P825JW.j jW Photographed, v18, then removed the two large unfounded stones, f54, runnining E-W out of the middle of the E baulk. Continued to excavate the laminations, f56.
C1 2005-08-27_P827JW.j jW We are concentrating on excavating the one-meter wide ledge along the S baulk to an elevation of 9000. This is the first of several steps down at two meter changes in elevation. We are excavating the ledge first so that we have a place to put the elevator. At the end of the day we were within 15cm of finishing.
C1 2005-08-28_P828JW.j jW Continued to excavate the laminations, f56, which are becoming more densly packed, and therefore harder to pick. Reached an elevation of 9000 in f56 in the south quarter, the location of the first stepped baulk. It is approximately 2m below the surface. Installed elevator on the step to facilitate dirt removal.
C1 2005-08-29_P829JW.j jW Continued to excavate the north three-quarters of the locus, removing the laminations, f56. Put all workmen in this locus to speed work, which is difficult due to the hard, dense nature of the laminations.
C1 2005-08-31_P831JW.j jW Continued the removal of laminations, f56. We expect to reach a cement-like surface similar to k101f43 in the early pickruns today. This may help to explain the compaction of f56 which we are seeing. As expected, laminations blended into harder, grayer accumulation, designated f63. Took relays.
C1 2005-09-01_P901JW.j jW Continued to excavate the hard, gray natural accumulation, f63. Only two lots of pottery, q109 and q110, taken from the entire day's excavation.
C1 2005-09-03_P903JW.j jW Continued to excavate the cement-like accumulation, f63. The digging is slow because of a reduced crew and the difficulty in forcing the pick down through the accumulation. We are promised a jackhammer tomorrow, when we anticipate reducing the excavated area to the north half of the locus to speed our investigation of whether or not there are structures south of the wall in what is now and likely was in antiquity an open plaza. We recovered relatively little pottery and few artifacts from this accumulation today.
C1 2005-09-04_P904JW.j jW Continued to excavate the hard, grayish brown accumulation, f63, by hand. After breakfast, we reached an elevation of 8700 in the northern three-quarters of the locus and measured for the second one-meter step to the north. Now we are excavating only the northern half of the locus. The quantity of pottery recovered increased significantly compared to the last few days, but still only amounted to two q-lots.
C1 2005-09-06_P906JW.j jW We began to cut and trim sections in preparation for final photographs and drawing. At gB's direction, we left the elevator and a small quantity of accumulation in the locus to possibly be used for a demonstration of the dirt removal process to attendees of the conference to outfit the new museum in Hassake.
C1 2005-09-11_P911JW.j jW Student Zuzan revised previous drawings of the north and east baulks of the locus.
C2 2005-08-25_P825JW.j jW gB reminded us of the need to step in the S baulk of the locus as we proceeded down. This is accomplished by leaving one meter ledges that run E-W at elevations 9000, 8800, etc., which will then be cut back to produce a gradual slope to prevent the baulk collapses we see in other parts of the excavation. We are taking all elevations from marker m4118, whose elevation is 9189. As of breakfast, we need to excavate down another 88 cm before stepping the first ledge.
C2 2005-09-01_P901JW.j jW gB and jW met and agreed to test the efficacy of using an electrically-powered jackhammer to speed the excavation of f63. They also agreed to reduce the excavation area to two square meters when the elevation of f63 reaches one meter below the first step to the south.
C2 2005-09-04_P904JW.j jW gB notified jW that we will have a jackhammer on site tomorrow with an operator. He will be on-site both in the morning and afternoon and the staff will needed to supervise the work. We will use all available workmen during both sessions to break up the residue and remove the dirt from the locus. If work proceeds efficiently, we may be able to re-excavate the full set of steps to an elevation of 8400 in the next two days.

B11 2005-08-24_Q413JW.j rE 2m by 2m column for typological sampling centered along the north edge of monumental wall, f11.
C1 2005-08-24_P824JW2.j jW The surveyor laid out and measured the locus, a 2m by 2m square in the far south edge of k12. We began removing the bakhia terrace, f50, then a softer, brown fill underneath, f57.
C1 2005-08-25_P825JW.j jW During the first pick run of the day in accumulation, f57, encountered another sloping layer of bakhia, similar to f50. Designated it f58, and began carefully following it from the N, down toward the monumental wall, f11.
C1 2005-08-27_P827JW.j jW We continued to excavate the accumulation, f57, under the layer of bakhia, f50, which forms the ancient top of the terrace. Near the end of the day we encountered another layer of bakhia, f58, under f57.
C1 2005-08-28_P828JW.j jW Excavated the last portion of the bakhia packing, f58. Below, we found a brown layer of fill containing ash (most in the NE corner) and deterioriated brick chunks (most along the south edge). Discovered human remains, f60, and a tiny bead, i7, in the NE corner of k104, buried in fill, f59, under the second layer of bakhia, f58.
C1 2005-08-31_P831JW.j jW gM and Zuzan are continuing to prepare the body, a1, for a registered photograph, v24, which will be used as a template for a Freehand drawing of the burial. Designated the ashy material in the NW corner as a lens, f64. Took relays and photographed f64 in relationship to the burial a1, v25. Noticed cracks developing in the E and N baulks. The N baulk looks like it might release several liters of accumulation and packing to the surface below if not excavated properly.
C1 2005-09-01_P901JW.j jW vS, gM and Zuzan excavated the skeleton, f60, and also removed a stone tool, i10 that was located under the hips and was undoubtedly a grave good. Zuzan, removed the bones of the animal, f61, and traced the ashy lens, f64, to the east to determine its extent and relationship, if any to the soil, f65, which surrounds the burial, a1.
C1 2005-09-03_P903JW.j jW While photographing, v27, and removing the stones in the south half of the locus, we better defined the interface between the ashy lens, f64 and the red accumulation, f65, to the north in the NE corner. The red accumulation appears as a small wedge, surrounded to the south and west by the ash deposit which covers the N half of the locus, v28. After the k101 stones were removed and safety ropes installed on the f10 stones, we began to excavate in the south half of this locus, extending the southern boundary of the western half to the monumental wall, f11. At the suggestion of gB, we designated this modified locus k105.
C1 2005-09-05_P905JW.j jW Continued to excavate this small locus on the north side of the monumental wall, f11. The components remained the same for the entire day - a fill of mixed materials including ash, soil, and chunks of deteriorated brick, which, in the direct vicinity of the wall, transitions to a vertical layer of bakhia, which in turn was used to seal the "inside" face of the wall against the intrusion of water.
C1 2005-09-06_P906JW.j jW We cleaned all sections in k104 and 105 to prepare for final photography and the drawing of sections.
C1 2005-09-11_P911JW.j jW Student Zuzan began to draw the north section of the locus.
C2 2005-09-01_P901JW.j jW gB, faB, and jW met to evaluate the impact of the cracks we see in the east part of the north baulk and the delay occasioned by the careful excavation of the burial, a1, on our plans to excavate a full 2m by 2m locus behind the monumental wall, f11. We decided that it was important to reach the north face of f11 and to excavate at least another meter deeper. gB, faB, and jW suggested that we reduce the excavation area to one that encompasses the south half of the locus. To excavate safely in this confined space, we must remove three large stones that overhang the locus on its south baulk and which are a part of the last phase of f11. Therefore we will photograph, relay, draw, and remove these stones, f66, f67, f68. In addition we will restrain with rope the stones that form the west boundary of the wall apron, f10.

I99 2005-08-24_P824JW2.j jW This locus is the second phase of the typological analysis column begun at the surface in k102, the north baulk of k12. Excavation of the first phase was halted when we reached a layer of compacted local virgin soil, bakhia, f50, which formed the sloping surface of a terrace which led upward from the monumantal wall, f11, to the temple at the top of the mound. We resumed digging the column into f50, which sealed well the layers below, after moving it southward along that surface to the face of the wall, and changing the dimensions from 1m by 4m to 2m by 2m. This way we get both the information about changes in the ceramics over time and data about how the wall was built with one small trench cut into the terrace surface.
K99 2005-09-09_P909JW.j jW During visits by the directors of excavations of Tell Beidar and Tell Hammukar, they mentioned that the pottery from a number of features in the typological column was earlier than we had previously believed. In particular they opined that the bulk of the sherds found were from the Late Chalcolithic III period. These were mixed with a few Ninevite V and Early Dynastic III sherds. The implication of this is that the fill behind the wall was taken from a place on or near the tell that was occupied much earlier than the temple mound. mKB will prepare a detailed analysis for the Global Record.

B11 2005-09-03_Q413JW.j rE 1m by 2m column for typological sampling, with a small 1m by 0.5m extension into the SW corner to intercept the monumental wall, f11. Shape described by relays. Basically the south half of k104.
C1 2005-09-03_P903JW.j jW We first removed a small ledge of accumulation, f69, along the south baulk that had built up during the excavation of the animal burial, f61. We then excavated the SW protrusion, f70 reaching the wall almost immediately after an extension of less than 50cm. These features and the wall were then photographed, v29.
C1 2005-09-04_P904JW.j jW To improve safety, we removed a small, overhanging ledge of accumulation above the eastern edge of this "L" shaped locus. Because it was a small quantity of clean loess and there was no pottery in it, the ledge was not assigned a separate feature number.
C2 2005-09-03_P903JW.j jW At the suggestion of gB, we agreed to speed our investigation of the construction of the wall by forming a new locus consisting of the southern half of k104 with a further southern extension in the western half of the south baulk to meet the monumental wall, f11. In this way we can continue the typological column in a reduced area nevertheless expected to yield diminished quantities of the same kinds of pottery, while at the same time seeing how the monumental wall was constructed. The western section of the baulk was selected to minimize the danger posed by overhanging stones from both f10 to the east and f11 to the south.

J3k106
A35 2020-07-27_ZE727jW.J jW L_W45d0117 J3w116 ZE726 jW k106.jpg
B11 2006-08-16_Q918EI4.j eI Is 106 because k101 to k105 have already been used in previous years.
C1 2006-08-16_Q816VE.j vVE The locus East of k1 was opened as k106, because k100-k105 had already been used in previous seasons. Like k1, part of k106 has been excavated in previous campaigns as a part of J2. The eastern half of k106 had been excavated much deeper as the start of the stepped baulk of J2. The western half had not been excavated yet. f536 is the top soil of this half of k106 and f537 is the natural accumulation underneath f536.
C1 2006-08-17_Q817VE.j vVE We continued to excavate the naturally accumulated deposits f537 in k106. This feature was closed after several pick runs because the Northern half of the locus had become softer, f541, and the Southern half had become harder, f542.
C1 2006-08-19_Q819VE1.j vVE We continued to excavate f541 and after one pick run we could close it because we had reached its bottom. Under f541 we saw the same hard deposit as in f542 and this means that f541 overlies f542 and was perhaps even cut into it.
C1 2006-08-20_Q820VE.j vVE After having excavated f542 to get a level surface in this locus we have reached the level at which the eastern half of this locus had been excavated in J2 (k23). Yesterday we had reached the bottom of f541 and the deposit of f542 seemed to continue in the entire square and this was excavated as f552. The large stone that had already been excavated in J2 was relayed and assigned f554. Five small boulders were relayed and collectively assigned to f555.
C1 2006-08-22_Q822VE.j vVE The top soil f536 of the northern baulk of k106 was excavated today and then we proceeded to excavate f537.
C1 2006-08-23_Q823VE.j vVE Today we finished removing the North baulk of k106. We did not excavate it to the level of k106 (which is now at the bottom of the deposits that cover the revetment wall) but to the level of k107 instead. The present state of k107 gives us a view of how the second apron must have looked like when its sacral use had been given up.
C1 2006-08-28_Q828VE1.j vVE We started to excavate f552 again after having removed f554 and f555.1-4.
C1 2006-08-29_Q829VE3.j vVE At first the entire surface of k106 was excavated consisted of the hard compact layer of naturally compacted surfaces f552. Then we proceeded to excavate f552 only in the Northern half of k106 in order to expose the face of the top of the revetment wall. f552 was closed when we reached the softer accumulation f573.
C1 2006-08-30_Q830VE1.j vVE In k106 we continued to go down in the northern half until we had cleared the face of the top of the revetment wall f569. Then we started to excavate also the Southern half of k106.
C1 2006-08-31_Q831VE.j vVE The stones that had been partially uncovered yesterday in the Northern half of k1 were further uncovered by excavating the Southern half of k106 to the same level. Several more large boulders were uncovered and relayed: f584, f586, f587, f588 and f589. These boulders seem to lie on the same level as the ash deposit of f577. The small boulder f580 was removed. We cleaned the faces of the stones of the top of the revetment wall. It was clear that some of these boulders are not resting directly on the other stones of the revetment wall, but were instead resting on deposits. This proves the hypothesis that the top of the revetment wall was a younger addition.

J3k107
A35 2020-07-27_ZE727jW.J jW L_W45d0118 J3w117 ZE726 jW k107.jpg
C1 2006-08-17_Q817VE.j vVE Locus k107 was opened today. The northern part of k107 has already been excavated by the German team from Tuebingen University as B6. We removed the top soil f539 in the southern part of k107. We then excavated the underlying natural accumulation f540 until we reached the naturally compacted floor f547. On top of f547 were lying the stone half circle f544 and the small grey deposit f546.
C1 2006-08-19_Q819VE1.j vVE The stone circle f544, the greyish deposit f546 that lies against f544 and the naturally compacted floor f547 on which f544 and f546 rest were removed. Then we continued to excavate the natural accumulation f548 that lies under f547.
C1 2006-08-20_Q820VE.j vVE We continued today to excavate f553, a continuation of f550, which we closed when we had uncovered the third step (from the top) of f556. The continuation of this natural accumulation was f553. Several more steps have been uncovered when we excavated f553.
C1 2006-08-22_Q822VE.j vVE Yesterday bP provided the marker points that define the eastern edge of k107. Today we set the eastern section baulk back to its correct position. For the deposits that would be removed in this process we created the feature f559. After pictures had been taken of the section baulks in this square we started to remove the southern section, i.e. the northern section baulk of k106. We also started to clean the east side of the East section baulk. That side was excavated in a previous campaign as a part of J02. Because that side would be the western section of the J2 locus it had not been drawn yet. We will do this because this section shows the stratigraphy in the gap (both horizontaly and vertically) between the second apron and the revetment wall.
C1 2006-08-23_Q823VE.j vVE The Northeast corner of the German trench was straightened (f560) and the East side of the eastern baulk of k107 was drawn. This section is very important because it shows the chronological relationship between the second apron and the revetment wall.
C1 2006-08-24_Q824VE.j vVE Today we removed the East baulk of k107. The second apron f556 in k107 has now been connected to the second apron that had already been exposed in J2.
C1 2006-08-26_Q826VE.j vVE In k107 the natural deposit f550/f553 was excavated and another step of the second apron f556 was uncovered.
C1 2006-08-27_Q827VE.j vVE In k107 the floating large boulders of f561 and f562 were removed and the soil which had supported them (f548) too. Then we started the excavation of the new deposit f568 which covered the lowest steps of the second apron f556.
C1 2006-08-28_Q828VE1.j vVE In k107 we opened f570 which is the natural deposit that lies between the second apron and the revetment wall and which underlies the second apron f532. Feature f570 is a wash layer and it is the same deposit as the ashy deposit in the East section of the East baulk of k107. Many small bones were found here and therefore we decided to sift all the deposits from this small area. Under f570 appeared baqaya and possibly the edges of two pits that were cut into the baqaya glacis.
C1 2006-08-29_Q829VE3.j vVE Today we took the pictures of f570 (see v544) and while cleaning the remainder of the deposits i501 was found. I also discovered during the cleaning that there are several mud bricks under the second apron f556.
C1 2006-08-30_Q830VE1.j vVE In k107 we excavated the little deposits f570 that remained on top of the baqaya, f581. After we noticed remains of mud bricks at the Eastern edge of the q-lot we decided to extend the feature further to the East and clean the surface there and remove only a thin layer. The exact connection between the baqaya f581 and that mudbrick cover f582 remains unclear. The pits that I yesterday thought cut the baqaya seem to be an animal hole. The mudbricks f583 lie under the second apron f556 and on top of the wash layer f570. The boulder f580 was relayed and will be removed tomorrow because it most likely had rolled down from the second apron f532.

C1 2006-08-30_Q830RE.j rE we started removing f203, natural accumulation under topsoil, on the southern part. The topsoil of this locus was previously removed in MZ17 by J2. We stopped stopped at the end of this feature, and we shifted the crew to remove the middle part of the east baulk. Then Under f108, a natural accumulation, we found a hard floor containing sherds laying flat, and pebbles.
C1 2006-08-31_Q831RE.j rE we continued removing f203, at the southern part. Then the feature began to chenge to f213, which was hard with too many small sherds and pebbles compacted with the soil.
C1 2006-09-03_Q903RE.j rE We started removing the southern part of the east baulk, until we reached the same level of all the the baulk which was excavating two days ago.
C1 2006-09-09_Q909JW.j jW First, we removed a lightly packed floor surface, f173, originally discovered as a part of k22. Under this was a mud glacis, f241, which continued to the west into k109. This a natural accumulation, f119. We did not find evidence of accumulation f118, which was atop f119 further to the south. In the north east corner we found that f119 covered the mud glacis, f123 and f31, that we previously exposed to the south and east respectively.
C1 2006-09-10_Q910JW1.j jW Today, we excavated to trace a hard-packed mud glacis-like surface, f123, northward from a gently upward sloping mud surface in k108, into k22 and thence to the northern edge of k23. In k22 it rose more sharply and was covered by accumulation f119. In k23 it began to slope less severely and was covered by what we believe to be a Phase 7 mud glacis, f152. At the northern edge, was a badly deteriorated mudbrick structure and pot-smash which seems to be associated with pit a6.
C1 2006-09-11_Q911JW1.j jW Starting at the east end of the locus, we began to excavate an E-W trench 60cm wide and 200cm long through floor f148 to expose the south face of monumental wall, f11 to a depth of about 60 cm. After exposing the face, we excavated the top to expose the stone components on it.
C1 2006-09-12_Q912JW.j jW As we began to excavate the narrow trench in k109 to probe for the monumental wall, f11, we extended it east to encompass all of this locus. At the end of the day we had reached the top memory stones and the first two rows of stones along the south face.
C1 2006-09-13_Q913JW.j jW We finished the excavation in the narrow trench to find the south face of monumental wall, f11 and the memory stones atop it.
C2 2006-09-10_Q910JW1.j jW Tomorrow we will carefully explore the nature of the brick structure to determine its function.
C2 2006-09-11_Q911JW1.j jW Tomorrow we will extend the trench farther to the west and when operations with the elevator permit, extend the trench to the south until it intersects with the north face of the north baulk of k93. We must to this so that the full extent of the wall face can be seen from the observation platform.

A35 2020-07-27_ZE727jW.J jW L_W45d0120 J3w119 ZE726 jW k109.jpg
C1 2006-08-24_Q824RE.j rE It is formed of the north half of k31, south half of k32, and the baulk between them. We removed f181 which is a powder accumulation covers all the locus which contains a few sherds of pottery and pebbles. At the end of the day the feature began to change in the north of k109, but we stopped the work and cleaned k109 to prepare for the work on Saturday.
C1 2006-08-27_Q827JW.j jW Continued to excavate accumulation, f182 to the south in order to follow the packed mud surface, f184 underneath. gB suggested that we should leave f184 exposed to study the relationship between the large stones, f185 to f188, and the mud surface. We began to draw the east section of k109 to speed the removal of the east baulk. We incorporated the north half of k32 into k109 in order to more fully expose the packed mud surface, f184, to the north. A relative measure of the elevations between f184 and the floor to the northeast in k22, f173, showed that the floor was 60cm higher than the packed mud at those points.
C1 2006-08-28_Q828RE.j rE We resumed the work on what was the north half of k32. We were expecting to find the continuation of floor f173 which was found in k22, so we measured the depth of this feature from the topsoil, and when we were 15cm above where we might reach the floor, the workmen used the small pick. But there was no continuation for f173 in k109 - it could be sloping more then f173. At the same elevation of f173 we found a piece of hard material, f196, on the east part of f194. It was similar to f184 which was in the south half of what was k32, but at a lower elevation. So we removed the soft accumulation around it which is f192, while keeping f196. There was also another feature f197, which contains 3 parts cut from a sandy stone, and small limestones with many sherds of pottery (f195, a large stone block was formed of the same material). So we cleaned around it and we stopped here for today in order to take a photo for those features and study their function tomorrow.
C1 2006-08-30_Q830RE.j rE We started removing f202, natural accumulation, in the southern part. Then the feature began to change to f204, softer and more laminations. We removed this the feature until we reached f... the mud packing. we stopped here. Then we drew the east section.
C1 2006-08-31_Q831RE.j rE we started removing the west baulk, which belong to J1, k24. but gB suggested that it is better do do it from J3 side because it is safer.
C1 2006-09-09_Q909JW.j jW The locus was divided into two parts, north and south. In the north, we removed accumulation, f194. Under it we found a mud glacis, f241, which was a continuation of a similar coating to the east under the packed earth floor, f173. In the south we removed four large floating limestone blocks, f184, f178, f242, and f243. We removed accumulation f240, under which was a hard packed dirt floor surface, f247. Atop this floor and possibly associated with it was an arc of large stones spanning about sixty degrees.
C1 2006-09-10_Q910JW1.j jW After photographing the portion of floor, f247, and the arc of stones, a8, excavated yesterday, we followed the floor to the north until it intersected with the Phase 7 mud glacis, f241, in the northern quarter of the locus. After removing the stones of a8 and their pedistals, we again photographed the expanded surface of f247, then removed it. Beneath, a softer, browner natural accumulation is appearing. Removed floating stones f115 and f237 from the eastern baulk line of the locus.
C1 2006-09-11_Q911JW1.j jW We continued to remove f247, eventually reaching a softer, more brown accumulation, f253. We then laid out an E-W trench that was one meter wide along the probable line of the monumental wall so that we can expose the top and south face and began to excavate there.
C1 2006-09-12_Q912JW.j jW We continued to dig in the narrow trench against the south face of the monumental wall, f11. Upon reaching the level of the memory stones and the first two rows of stones along the south face, we stopped. We then began removing accumulation f253, from the trench south face south to the north baulk of k94.
C1 2006-09-13_Q913JW.j jW We finished excavating the narrow trench to expose the monumental wall, f11, and the memory stones atop it. We then excavated to the south baulk of k109, removing the rest of accumulation, f253 and part of accumlation, f257 below. Feature 257 was filled with pebbles and rocks and had an ashy hue. Late in the morning, about one meter from the west baulk and just on the south edge of the narrow trench we found a faience pendant and several beads, i20. In the afternoon we excavated carefully in the vicinity and found other associated beads, i21, i22, i23.
C1 2006-09-14_Q914JW.j jW We found two more beads in the general vicinity of the pendant, i20. Continued to excavate natural accumulation, f257 between the trench at the south face of revetment wall, f11 and

C1 2010-09-13_U914JW.j jW After cleaning around the locus, we began to remove the baqaya glacis, f109, which coated the temple mound. At the dirction of mKB we did not collect sherds because several years of erosion had diminished their value for providing data about when they were deposited. For the following reasons we determined that the baqaya surface, f109, provided an excellent seal to the material below it.
It was contiguous over the entire locus;
It was at least 5cm thick everywhere; When picked it came off in sheets and chunks;
It was extremely hard.
Below f109 was a layer of bricky material, f346, with many of the same characteristics as f109. It was reddish with calcite nodules and it came off in sheets and chunks. In places, particularly in the eastern half, it had been eroded and replaced with an ashy layer, f347, which in turn covered what appears to be baqaya bricks laid on edge with brownish mortar.
