Inspections checklist

Palace

Amer Ahmad – December 2025

Back to top: Palace

Introduction

The palace is considered one of the areas that require the most frequent inspections due to the presence of brick walls, some of which are very fragile and therefore need regular monitoring to assess their current condition and carry out the necessary interventions to protect them, as is the case with wall C2-3.

Details regarding the other walls are not included on this page, but in synopsis the process focuses on ensuring that no water leaks from the protective systems above down to the lower, which could cause damage.

The inspection also includes checking the condition of the burlap and whether the plastic sheeting (naylon) is placed properly. Despite the presence of a protection system, the walls are additionally covered with plastic to ensure protection in case rainwater infiltrates.

The monitoring work also includes:

  • Ensuring the cleanliness of the palace and the removal of dirt and weeds.
  • Checking the condition and cleanliness of the pathways to ensure safe access for visitors.
  • Inspecting the covers placed over the exposed archaeological installations, such as the tannur, the bath, and the remaining installations.

7. October 31, 2025

Observations:

  • The palace area is generally clean, with no weeds or dirt, except for the work area where the removal of old plaster from the walls is underway in preparation for applying the new plaster.
  • I would also like to point out that the plastic sheeting (nylon) covering the walls under the protective systems is mostly worn out and has become brittle. Therefore, addressing this will be the next step after plastering, and it should be done alongside an assessment of the wall conditions.
  • Based on the weather forecast, there is a possibility of rain on November 10. So, it would be prudent to cover walls C1-1 and H3-H1. Some gaps were also noticed in the burlap, which will need to be sewn in the coming days, in addition to replacing some of it.
  • It is important to note that the plastering process delayed the completion of other work on the site, and I look forward to finishing the plastering soon

8. November 15, 2025

Observations:

  • Plastering works have been completed, and I will send a detailed report on these works later. The plastering process represents the first phase of the planned tasks, while there are two additional phases: assessing the condition of the walls and inspecting the plastic sheeting, which appears brittle and stiff.
  • Also, the corner located in the south-west of Unit 16, between rooms H3 and H1, requires attention, as it has turned into a pit where dirt and water accumulate. This may cause it to expand and negatively affect the courtyard floor, and its appearance is not suitable for presentation to visitors. I will send suggestions regarding this matter in a separate report.
  • It should also be noted that plastic sheeting has been placed on walls H3-H1 and C1-1. As for wall C2-3, its condition will be evaluated in detail along with the assessment of the other palace walls.
  • One of the stones in wall C7-3 had fallen, and we have restored it to its place. Its condition will also be evaluated in the wall condition report.
  • Some of burlap require replacement or sewing of gabs, which will be carried out later.

9. November 30, 2025

Observations:

  • The worn-out nylon has been replaced with new one on the walls.
  • The corner located in the south-west of Unit 16, between rooms H3 and H1, requires attention, as it has turned into a pit where dirt and water accumulate. This may cause the area to expand and negatively affect the courtyard floor, and its appearance is not suitable for visitors (repeated).I have only heard from Samer, I would like to know from which accumulation we can take soil.
  • Some of the burlap needs to be replaced or have its gaps sewn, which will be done later this month.
