It delimits the previously excavated (as unit J1) region containing revetment wall, f189. It was not surveyed this season - rather the coordinates were obtained by extending to the south and east existing survey lines . C1 2008-08-24_S824LH2.j lH We started removing the natural accumulation, f158, after we photographed the water chanel, v104, that cuts its way through this accumulation. We began to cut a new section of the east face of the east baulk in order to dig effectively for the escarpment of revetment wall, f3. The escarpment begins and can be seen clearly as feature 239 in J1 and continues to the west. It most probably ends as f74 of wall f41 in the middle of J5. C1 2008-08-25_S825LH1.j lH Today we removed the compact natural accumulation, f158, especially the part that abuts the revetment wall. The upper sloping part of the red, stone-like escarpment, f169, appeared under the accumulationof f158. We started to follow the escarpment which slops pasically towards the south in this locus. C1 2008-08-26_S826LH.j lH After we found out that the sloping compact floor, f169,is not the escarpment, but the floor accumulation which coveres it; we started to remove this accumulation. Alaso we extended our excavationarea toward the south and removed the rest of the natural accumulation of f158 which used to cover the floor accumulation, f169. C1 2008-08-27_S827LH.j lH We completed preparations for exploration for westward extension of the escarpment originally found in J1. From overhead, it is clear that we have located it on the eastern edge of the locus. The search is complicated by the fact that the escarpment is covered by a hard deposit of similar material that has melted from the glacis above, f169. We will continue this project next season. C1 2008-08-05_S805LH.j lH We started excavating the topsoil of this locus, f105. It looks soft, chunky and powdery. It covered a big limestone which sits in it in the south western quadrant of this locus. C1 2008-08-06_S807JW.j jW After finishing the removal of the east baulk of k34, we resumed excavating in this locus. In natural accumulation, f115, we uncovered a large, isolated limestone block, f116, in the middle of the locus. In the southeastern quadrant was a cluster of melon-sized stones, f120. C1 2008-08-09_S809JW.j jW Continued to excavate natural accumulation, f115, with large picks. Documented and removed isolated floating stone, f116, and isolated cluster of stones, f120. C1 2008-08-10_S810LH.j lH We continued excavating the soft natural accumulation, f129, which is overlayed by a group of big limestones, f130, in the southwestern part of it. Among the collected pottery from the accumulation of f129, q185, we found a Middle Assyrian style base, which is relatively thick with a string cut, flat bottom. In the middle of the southern edge of the last mentioned accumulation, f129, we noticed an ashy soft spot coverd a big stone. At least five big limestones are scattered among the soil of f129, but we didn`t label them as a new feature because we don`t know the extent of them. C1 2008-08-16_S816JW.j jW Took a series of photographs, v82, to document features excavated in the past week. Finished excavating the safety baulk accumulation under topsoil, f115. C1 2008-08-05_S805LH.j lH After removing the soft chunky topsoil, f104, we found a hard crusted natural accumulation, 106. A big limestone sits in this new feature. The last mentioned stone is on the line of the stones of f14 in k24, even though it`s about 1 m higher. C1 2008-08-06_S807JW.j jW At the beginning of the day, began to remove natural accumulation, f112, which was present throughout the locus and surrounded the stones of installation, f108. Uncovered a semi-circular arc of small stones, along the eastern baulk. C1 2008-08-06_S806LH.j lH We continued excavating the hard crusted natural accumulation, f106, where we found two big limestones, f109, in the northwestern quadrant of this locus. In the next pick run we noticed that these two stones aren`t founded, but sits in f106. Also we found traces of another line of stones, f108, at the northern border of this locus on the line of the stones of f14 in k24, even though it`s about 1 m higher. C1 2008-08-09_S809JW.j jW Continued to excavate natural accumulation, f112, with large picks. Documented and removed an arc of stones, f119, along the eastern baulk. Uncovered a stone installation, f123, running NW to SE in the southeastern quadrant. C1 2008-08-14_S814JW.j jW We began to remove the safety baulk on the south side of the locus. We used features previously identified from excavation in the main part of the locus. One floor surface and what were probably crude walls associated with it were identifed near the end of the day. Features have not been assigned. The locus is filled with isolated limestone blocks and organized rows of stones which we have not been able to link with others nearby. C1 2008-08-14_S814JW.j jW We prepared and photographed, v80, a long view looking east and west across 4 loci (k14, k24, k34, k44) that documented the relationship between the portion of the temple mound which includes the staircase, f21, and various stone installations in k14 and k24; the mini-plaza to the west in k34; and the stonework in k44 which forms the western boundary of the mini-plaza. dL analyzed the open spaces between the various stoneworks in k14 and k24 to see if they had been paved. C1 2008-08-16_S816JW.j jW Took a series of photographs, v83, to document features excavated so far this season. It delimits the previously excavated (as unit J1) region containing revetment wall, f189. It was not surveyed this season - rather the coordinates were obtained by extending to the south and east existing survey lines . C1 2008-07-26_S726LH.j lH we started to remove the northern baulk of this locus, so we can get a comparative view for the stratigraphical sequence in J1 and J5, beside that we can follow the line of the revetment wall in its western part after we remove this baulk. C1 2008-07-28_S728LH.j lH We removed the northern baulk of this locus. After careful cleaning we found that the compacted floor, f39, extens throghout the southern half of k23 and contiues to the south edge of the north baulk of k22. C1 2008-07-29_S729LH.j lH We started to remove the irregularly shaped part of the north baulk, f72. It was left over from previous excavations. C1 2008-07-31_S731JW.j jW We drew and photographed the section of the north baulk which was approximately bisected by revetment wall, f3, which continued to the north into k23. Because we could not verify that the soil features we see in the baulk had been properly identified and documented, we assigned them new J5 numbers and described all of them. Features f77 to f85 are located to the west of f3 and are assumed to have built up outside the mound, while features f86 to f90 are located to the east of f3 and are presumed to be part of the temple mound complex. C1 2008-08-03_S803JW.j jW took dirty photo of the area bounded as follows; to the south by the south baulk of k22; to the east by the revetment wall, f3; to the north by the stones of installation, f37; and to the west by the west baulks of k22 and k23. The purpose was to draw templates to assist in pottery analysis of features which abut wall, f3. C1 2008-08-14_S814JW.j jW We traced the excarpment from the northwest corner of the locus where it was first discovered, south along the outer face of wall, f41, to which it belongs. The soil above the escarpment was defined as mixed since it was deposited by a combination of backdirt from locus k100 and aeolian soil deposited since the revetment wall system was first excavated several seasons ago. As a result the pottery will tell us little about when the excarpment was built and used. C1 2008-08-16_S816JW.j jW Removed accumulations and laminations f86, f87, f88, and f89, from a narrow strip east of revetment wall, f3 and west of the west face of the west baulk of k12. The purpose was to determine when the top stones of f3 were placed. We stopped before excavating f90, which comprised a dam of small stones on the south and red, bricky material to the north. To fully explore this feature, k12 must be completely excavated to this elevation, which will not happen this season. jW looked at the pottery lots in the field, which seemed to be Mittani, Phase 6, which we would expect from the stratigrapy. The results were documented in view, v84. C1 2008-08-17_S817JW.j jW We photographed ,v85, the results of excavating the series of layers between the east face of revetment wall, f3, and the west face of the unexcavated portion of k12. Although we halted work before the lowest layer, f90, was excavated. mKB reported that some Phase 1 sherds were present in the q-lot for f89. We measured and photographed the location, v85. The large limestone block, f151, had almost certainly shifted away from its original place at the southwest corner of revetment wall, f3, and was resting on a soil pillar, f154, After measuring and photography, v89, v90, we moved it back to its likely original position atop the lower wall stones and removed the pillar. C1 2008-08-18_S818JW.j jW Began to excavate laminar, natural accumulation, f157. It is a narrow strip that follows the south face of revetment wall, f3. The goal is to determine if the escarpment to the plaza is continuous from the west face (where it is f74) to the plaza itself, excavated as J1f239 in this and previous seasons. C1 2008-08-21_S821JW.j jW With two teams we excavated a considerable amount of natural accumulation, f157, from the area to the south of revetment wall, f3, in a strip about 100cm wide. Because we expect that the escarpment rises from east to west and because we see part of it as f74 as it abuts wall, f41 along the outer west face of f3, we expected to trace f74 around the corner of f3 as it turned to the east. However, pickman Hussein stated that he was seeing a variety of textures, colors, and inclusions (including brick pieces and ash) in the soil he was excavating, not the hard material he had encountered next to f41. C1 2008-08-23_S824JW.j jW Removed natural accumulation, f157, from a 100cm strip immediately south of revetment wall, f3. Of interest was a gulley, which began to the northwest along the west face of wall, f41, in k33 and then ran along the south face of revetment wall, f3. C2 2008-07-31_S731JW.j jW gB, fAB, and jW discussed the approach to excavating the glacis/escarpment, f74. It descends to the southwest rapidly from wall, f41 and has been broken by at least one pit which is filled with ashy soil. In the SW corner of k22 it is covered by a number of layers of modern and ancient accumulations. Since a partial baulk at the intersection of k22 and k21 would have to be removed to complete the task we decided to cover the exposed part of f74 (which has been photographed) with plastic and finish tracing its extents at the end of the season when we expect that more of it will be present in k33 to the northwest, which is presently being excavated. As to the new features, we will excavate those to the west of f3 first, assuming as elsewhere, that those would have built up on the outside of the wall, eventually covering it. We will not excavate the features to the east of f3 until we need to know how it was built. C3 2008-08-21_S821JW.j jW In a meeting with jW, gB stated that he believed that the part of the revetment wall, f3, that we are seeing may be a late addition which includes the pavement of stones contained by it and juts out to the south of the original line of f41. On the other hand, f41, is a much earlier structure that passes under f3. As such we still may have not yet reached the escarpment even though we are below the third course of stones which comprise f3. B11 2008-08-20_S820JW.j jW We excavated the north baulk of k13 as f153. We extended the scope of this volumetric material to encompass the north baulk of k23 as well and began to excavate it. C1 2008-07-13_S713LH.j lH We removed the berm from the southern border of the locus, then began excavation. The topsoil was f2, (actually a mixture of old topsoil and recent backfill). f2 covered f9, natural accumulation. q5 contained the pottery from this feature. At the Northeastern quadrant of k23 we found i2 which is fragment of obsidian blade. C1 2008-07-14_S714LH.j lH We noticed some differences in natural accumulation, f9, near the southwestern border, at the depth of about 20cm from the topsoil; it was more compact, full of pottery sherds, bones, pebbles and stones. We didn`t consider it as a new feature because it`s not different in the nature of its deposition from f9. Under this compact soil we found a stone, f11, in the south western quadrant. In the southeastern quadrant we found a lens, f10, which is compact with big stones and pottery sherds among it. The q-item q10.1 is an obsidian fragment. C1 2008-07-15_S715LH.j lH We removed f10, from which we got a grinding stone, i4. After we dug around the stone in southwestern quadrant,f11, we found two co-located stones at the bottom of it. C1 2008-07-16_S716LH1.j lH We removed the natural accumulation, f9. We made a new feature for the natural accumulation, f16, because we began to uncover several large limestone boulders which may be connected with the revetment wall, f3. C1 2008-07-19_S719LH.j lH We started with removing the fill, f25, of the pit, a1, and the stones inside the pit, f24, then we took aphoto, v16. A new compact feature appeared, f31, in northeastern half of the pit, includes two bones, i14, that hPU identified as coming from a young caw. We photographed this feature before we remove it, v18. C1 2008-07-20_S720LH.j lH We started to remove the natural accumulation, f23, in the southern part of k23, using the big pick, and we found one mudbrick and many basalt grinding stones in it. Under f23, we found a new natural accumulation, f33, that looks softer than the previous feature. After removing f33, we found a new kind of accumulation that usually deposite above a floor, f34. We sent the pottery, q44, directly to mKB so that we could learn the phase. This accumulation covered a group of large stones, f37, which may be a part of the revetment wall of the temple complex. Then we started to remove it after photographing, v21. C1 2008-07-21_S721LH.j lH We started our work in this locus with taking photo for it, v22, includes the natural accumulation above the floor, f34, with the stones traces in the SW quadrant of k23, f37, and the big stone in the SE quadrant, f38, that sits in the natural accumulation, f33; this view shows also the northern half of this locus including the natural accumulation, f30, and the stone line in the east, f19, and the flat stones to the west, f20. After taking the photo we removed the rest of f34, -using the small pick- to find a floor underneath, f39, which is full of limestone nodules. It`s mixed with big amount of pottery sherds, pebbles and weak reddish soil. We noticed that this new floor dosen`t continue toward the stones of f37, because there is a soft powdery accumulation which is a fill, f43. We photogrphed those new evidence with v23. After some conversations about this new features, we decided not to remove f39. We`ll remove it after removing the southern baulk of k23. This will help us understand the relationship of this feature and the eastern section of J01. We will show this by photographing the section of the eastern baulk of J1 and the south baulk of k23 in J5 together. Then we removed the natural accumulation, f33, -using the small pick- in the southeastern quadrant of k23. We found a new feature containing large stones, f46. It was lower than the stone, f38, which covered floor accumulation, f34. It`s on the same north-south line as revetment wall, f3 in k22. C1 2008-07-21_S721MO.j mO we started to remove natural accumulation , f33 , in the Eastern part. In antiquity the floor accumulation , f39 , was cut to insert stones , f37 ,. We don't know why this was done. The evidence for the cut is a soft fill , f43 , between , f37 , and , f39 ,. The stone , f38 , covered floor accumulation , f39 ,. But the floor accumulation , f39 , covers the stones , f46 ,. Now , we think that f46 may be the top of revetment wall f3. This means that stone, f38, was probably a memory stone of the wall. The order of deposition was: f46 then f39 then f37 then f26 and f38. C1 2008-07-22_S722MO.j mO In the NW corner we started dig the natural accumulation , f30 ,. Under it was a natural accumulation, f48, around the stones, f20. It's similar to natural accumulation, f30. Then we began to remove natural accumulation , f30, in the NE corner and under it we found a mud brick deposit , f54. We dug the natural accumulation, f30, which was SE of, f19. Under it we found a new floor accumulation, f50,. It's the continuation to the east of floor accumulation, f33. Under, f50, we found a highly compacted floor, f53. It was continuation of highly compacted floor, f39. But it was only found in a small spot. So the accumulation order is: f19, covers f50; f50 covers, f53. So , f19 and, f38 , wer a deposited later than f50. ,the bricks of , f54 abuts f19. f30 covers f48, but they are similar accumulations. C1 2008-07-23_S724LH.j lH We started with removing the rest of the natural accumulation, f30, between the stones of f20 and f19. The melted brick, f54, in the northeastern corner seemed to be continued under the natural accumulation, f30. We photographed the new feature and its relationship with the other features in this locus ,v28. We want to remove the southern baulk of k23 in order to open our unit, J5, to the eastern section of J1. We began to draw it, w3. Removing the last mentioned baulk could help us tracing the continuity of the northern corner of the revetment wall, f3, in k22. The location of the stones of f37 in the southwestern quadrant, and f46 in the southeastern quadrant seem to form a semi-circle, which maybe represents kind of cultic symbol that the Hurrians used to build at the corners of their houses, temples and other kinds of structures. We can see this phenomenon in the southwestern corner of the temple, and in some houses in Urkesh. C1 2008-07-24_S724LH1.j lH After drawing, w3, the southern baulk section, we photographed it, v32. Therefore, we can remove it on Saturday. C1 2008-07-29_S729LH.j lH After clening this locus, we photographed it, v41, in a wide view that links its features(particularly f39) with the revetment wall, f3, and the feature sequence in the eastern section of J1. Then we started to excavate the natural accumulation, f48, inside the arc formed by the stones of f37 and f46. Then we extended the excavation to the south and noticed two new stones in the southeastern corner of this locus, that may be a part of the top of the revetment wall, f3. After claeaning, we photographed the new evidence, v42. C1 2008-08-03_S803LH.j lH We continued excavating the southwestern quadrant of this locus together with the western part of the southern baulk that abuts the stones of the revetment wall, f3. After we removed the rest of the sandy lamination, f78, we started to remove the dense natural accumulation below, f80. Below the last mentioned natural accumulation, f80, we found a new layer of chunky, sandy lamination, f81, which we finished excavating today. The collected pottery from f78, 80 and 81 includes many Mittani-style flat rims, and goblet bases. C1 2008-08-04_S804LH.j lH We removed the dense natural accumulation, f82, at the southwestern quadrant of this locus. The stone triangle, f99, became more clear, so we could notice that it`s linked with the stones of f41, running to the northwest, and probably continue its direction below the stones of f37 and f20. We photographed this new feature in its relationship with the surrounding features, v55. The natural accumulation, f82, was covering a lens of ashy soil, f83, which rested directly above the glacis, f74. Removing the ashy layer, f83, helped to see clearly the extention of the glacis, f74, which abuts the western border of all the stones of f41, and sloping towards the south and the southwest. The ashy layer above it in this locus could be connected to the same phenomenon that produced the ash above the glacis of J6, f63. Above the third and the second millenium glacis in J1 gB also noticed the same ashy layer. C1 2008-08-13_S813JW.j jW The east and north baulks were drawn and photographed on S811 and S813 respectively. See v76, v77, w111, w12. We began removing the east baulk as f132. Other than a one-stone extension to the east for stone installation, f19, no significant architecture was found. We designated two large stones previously found as f138 and f139. C1 2008-08-21_S821JW.j jW Finished excavating the volumetric material, f153, comprising the north baulk. The southern part of staircase, f21, was exposed, but we still do not understand the link between it and the arrangement of stones to its south, f126, which may represent a damaged structure that originally abutted the staircase. Among other things, it yeilded the monumental staircase, f21. C1 2008-07-13_S713LH.j lH We began excavating this locus today. Under topsoil, f1, is natural accumulation, f7. In the Northeastern quadrant we found i1 which is a body of an animal figurine with broken head and legs. A stone hearth, f8, was in the southwest quadrant. C1 2008-07-14_S714LH.j lH We continued digging natural accumulation, f7, but we noticed the same differences which is in k23 also near the western border, but it was 10cm deeper than that in k23. But we didn`t consider it as a new feature because it`s not different in the nature of its deposition from f7. The q-item q8.1 is an obsidian fragment. C1 2008-07-15_S715LH.j lH We removed f7, from which we got a clay body of animal figurine,i5. At the western border and towards the east we found new natural lens, f12, that could be the ancient surface of the terrace at the end of the last period of settlement. In the Eastern half we found soft soil, f13. In the NE quadrant was a line of at least three large limestone blocks, f14, running east to west. We phtographed f12 and f13 in v6. Photo v7 shows the line of stones, f14, and a Mittani sherd which was directly on top of the stones. The stones of f14 are at elevation 9181. C1 2008-07-16_S716LH1.j lH We found more stones that were part of the installation of stones, f14. The hard accumulation in the west half of the locus, f12, may be covering more stones of f14, so we decided to remove f12 after we had photos for f12, f13, f14, in v10. We found another Mittani rim sherd among the stones, f14, that belongs to q17. Beside that we found a broken base of Mittani goblet that belongs to q20. C1 2008-07-18_S718LH.j lH We continued removing the natural accumulation, f12, where we found a new line of stones, f21, that runs in south-north direcion. C1 2008-07-22_S722LH1.j lH We started to excavate the southwestern quadrant of this locus, by removing the natural accumulation, f52. We found at least two steps below and to the west of the original stones of f21. The new steps are made of large dressed stones. C1 2008-07-22_S722MO.j mO we divided the square in two parts. We dug in the southern part in the SW corner. We found the continuation of NS line of stones, f21. There are at last three additional steps to the west. C1 2008-07-23_S724LH.j lH We continued digging the western edge, and removing the natural accumulation, f52. The last mentioned feature seemed to cover another line of stones which is the third step in the staircase, f21, discovered by probinging the accumulation, f52, along the western baulk with the Shish. So after exposing the third step in the southwestern quadrant of k24, we took a new photo of it, v29. C1 2008-07-24_S724LH1.j lH We continued removing the natural accumulation, f52, from the western border of this locus. At the northwestern corner we found a horizontal big stone, that offers the northern limit for the staircase. To the north of it we found a lens that is very compact and full of pebbles. C1 2008-07-28_S728LH.j lH We discovered that three layers abut the stones of f14. The natural accumuation, f52, is the highest layer that abuts the stones of f14. We temporarily left a portion in the northeastern corner, so that we could photograph it and the two new features that appears under it, f65 and f66. The first feature, f65, is a highly compact floor that is full of pebbles and pottery sherds, with a flat surface. It extends from the northeastern corner of this locus to about 130 cm to the east. The second feature, f66, covers f65. It is a compact natural accumulation, with irregular surface. After cleaning the locus with its new features, we photographed them, v37. Then we removed the rest of f52 in the southeastern corner to find that f66 continues its extention under the natural accumulation of f52. C1 2008-08-13_S813JW.j jW The east and north baulks were drawn and photographed on S812 and S813, respectively. See v74, v75, w14, w13. We began removing the east baulk as f133. In the baulk were an extension to the north of stone installation, f14, and a clear indication that f14 was identical to installation, f108, in k14. In addition we found an N-S line of stones, f140, which resemble those that form the west face of the top of staircase, f21. C1 2008-08-13_S813JW.j jW After photography, v78, a crew from A20 began to excavate the topsoil, f134, with the large pick. After two pick runs, we began to excavate the naturual accumulation under the topsoil, f136. C1 2008-08-14_S814JW.j jW We resumed excavation of natural accumulation, f136, with large picks. Except for a few isolated small stones, there was nothing of interest, which so far matches our hypothesis, that this locus overlays the western extension of escarpment, f74 - first discovered in k22 to the east - and that nothing else was ever built thereafter in that location. C1 2008-08-16_S816JW.j jW We continued to excavate natural accumulation, f136, which has not changed since we removed the topsoil. The outside sections of the east and north baulks confirm that the accumulation is uniform to a depth of about two meters from the surface. C1 2008-08-17_S817JW.j jW We continued to excavate natural accumulation, f136. At the end of the day we decided to cease excavations there and document the results. C1 2008-08-18_S818JW.j jW Drew, w18, and photographed, v93 the north baulk. Drew, w19, and photographed, v94, the east baulk in preparation for removal. C1 2008-08-21_S821JW.j jW Removed the north baulk, which was treated as volumetric material, f162, since the stratigraphy had already been documented by drawing and photography as topsoil and a single accumulation under it. C1 2008-08-23_S824JW.j jW Removed the volumetric material in the east baulk, f162. C1 2008-08-25_S825LH1.j lH We cut its northeastern corner in about 50 cm to the west, and 50 cm to the south. Removing this corner was in order to better view from the panorama which is to the south of J5. That coner used to stand against the stone installation in k23, so it was impossible to see the whole structure without removing it. C1 2008-08-26_S826LH.j lH We extended the borders of the triangle at the northeastern corner, f167, about 1 m to the west and 2 to the south. This triangle dimensions which we started to remove yesterday was 50 cm to the west and 50 cm to the south originally. Removing this corner was in order to better view from the panorama which is to the south of J5. That coner used to stand against the stone installation in k23, so it was impossible to see the whole structure without removing it. C1 2008-08-27_S827LH.j lH We finished removing the volumetric material, f167, from the northeast corner of this locus. B11 2009-03-18_T318JW1.j jW This locus was the expected location of link between the monumental staircase, f21, and the stonework of locus k43. C1 2008-07-24_S724LH1.j lH We started excavating its topsoil, f55, which looks chunky and compact. Under the top soil, we found a new natural accumulation, f59. C1 2008-07-26_S726LH.j lH We continued removing the natural accumulation, f59, which was soft and chunky. At midday we moved the workmen from this locus to remove the northern baulk of k22. C1 2008-07-31_S731JW.j jW We continued to remove natural accumulation, f59 with two crews using large picks. Although not of uniform consistency having areas of soft and hard patches due to the action of water and erosion after abandonment, we kept digging it as one feature because the overall color and texture did not change. It contained few inclusions. C1 2008-08-04_S804LH.j lH We removed the compact crusted natural accumulation, f98, which extended on all over this locus below the soft powdery accumulation, f94. This highly compact floor could be connected with the similar layers in the surrounding loci; f60 in k44, f93 in k43, f45 in k34, f39 in k23. Under the compact floor, f98, we found a new feature, f100, which is a lamination, full of nodules in a red sandy matrix. We removed the last mentioned lamination to find a very compact feature, f102. It has the same reddish brown sandy color of the lamination, f100, which was covering it. But it`s much more compact. C1 2008-08-05_S805LH.j lH After drawing the western section of this locus, w8, we photographed it, v58. Also we drew the northern section, w9, and photographed it, v61. Then we drew the eastern section of this locus, w10, and photographed it, v63. C1 2008-08-06_S807JW.j jW Finished removing the east baulk, f107, and a cluster of melon-sized stones that was imbedded in it, f111. Began excavating packed floor surface, f102, in order to define the interface between the staircase, f21; the wall, f41; and its glacis, f74. C1 2008-08-06_S806LH.j lH For this eastern baulk, we started to remove it as one feature, f107, because all of the collected pottery from k23 is Mittani style. C1 2008-08-09_S809JW.j jW Continued to carefully excavate the clean, hard, naturally compacted, fine-grained accumulation, f102. Under it was a very sandy laminar accumulation, f122. As we removed this acccumulation, we noticed a very hard-surface accumulation, f124, underneath, which abutted the N-S line of stones, f126, in the same way that glacis f74 abutted wall, f41 to the south. On this basis, jW tentatively called the accumulation in this area, glacis, f121. Later detailed analysis with the assistance of fAB and rE established that f121 was a continuation of f124, and that it was a natural glacis formed atop f74, which is several layers of accumulation below. Late in the day we began removing f124. C1 2008-08-10_S810LH.j lH We continued excavating the eastern half including the eastern baulk of this locus, so we removed the rest of the compact natural accumulation of f124. Below the last mentioned accumulation there was another compact layer, f127, which formed by a lamination full of nodules, Mittani style pottery sherds, animal bones, and teeth for different kinds of animals (probably donkey and rodent..). The lamination of f127 covers a layer of natural accumulation, f128, which appears in the western section of k23. It also abuts the stones of f126 in the eastern baulk. In the northern part of the baulk we found traces of new stones in the same line as the stones of f126. C1 2008-08-13_S813JW.j jW Began excavating laminated accumulation, f128, with the large pick as planned. Along the western face of the midline boundary, pickman Kamiran reported that the feature was now much harder and was breaking up into rectangular pieces of dense material. On the south end of the eastern border with stone installation f126, a lower stone in line with the staircase, f21, appeared. These data were evidence that the escarpment that we were searching for may possibly slope up to the west rather than down as we had expected. After thorough cleaning, the locus was photographed, v79. After shifting to the small pick, we started excavating a new soil accumulation, f135, below f128. We started from the far southeast corner, where we could see the escarpment, f74, about 10cm below and to the east. We began to remove f135 and found that it covered a very hard, gray layer with some embedded sherds. As it was still about 5cm above f74, we designated it floor accumulation, f137. Traces of f137 could be seen in the west section of the east half square in k33 and in the north edge of the west section of k22. C1 2008-08-14_S814JW.j jW We finished excavating laminar floor accumulation, f135. It could be seen in section and differed in both color (brown versus gray) and texture (hard versus very hard) from the floor accumulation, f137, below it which in turn covers the almost stone-like escarpment, f74. Consulted with rE, supervisor of unit J1 (which has several similar escarpment surfaces with hard accumulations above) to properly instruct pickman. C1 2008-08-16_S816JW.j jW We continued to excavate floor accumulation, f137. Two pottery lots, q204 and q209 were tagged for immediate evaluation of the phase by mKB. C1 2008-08-17_S817JW.j jW We removed two more q-lots from floor accumulation, f137. There is a miniature wadi that has formed about 50 cm west of the stone installation, f126, and most of the pottery and bones came from the bottom of it. The situation was documented in v88. C1 2008-08-18_S818JW.j jW Drew, w17, and photographed, v90, the bottom part of the north baulk in preparation for removal. C1 2008-08-25_S825LH1.j lH We removed the rest of the part of the floor accumulation, f137, that abuts the bottom step of the staircase, f21, and the stone installation, f126. Under the floor accumulation, f137, we found a compact escarpment which had been disturbed by a gulley, f168. The gulley runs south-north near the bottom step of staicase, f21, and continue its line parallel to the stone instalation, f126, in k23 then we can see the rest of it near the revetment wall, f3, in k22 and k12. We photographed the new feature, v105 and v106, in order to understand the sequence of the features that abut the staircase, f21, and the stone installation, f126, to the south of the staircase. C2 2008-08-06_S807JW.j jW We will excavate f102 and the accumulations below it by starting in the far SE corner of the locus, move west to the N-S midline, then move north toward f21. C2 2008-08-13_S813JW.j jW On S814 we will remove the balance of f135, which is primarily located in the eastern quarter of the locus. We well clean well and photgraph, then consult with gB and fAB before we begin to excavate f137. C2 2008-08-17_S817JW.j jW as of today we will cease excavation in this locus for the MZ21 season. C1 2008-07-16_S716LH1.j lH We started to excavate the topsoil, f15. A clay figurine of a female body was found among this feature, i8. C1 2008-07-18_S718LH.j lH The excavation continuing in this locus. Under the topsoil there is a new natural accumulation, f17. C1 2008-07-19_S719LH.j lH We removed the natural accumulation, f17, which was covering another natural accumulation, f29, which looks lighter and softer. C1 2008-07-20_S720LH.j lH We planed to stop excavating the whole locus after we reach the depth of 9200, but when we measured the depth, it was already 9190. Then we began to excavate only the north half using the big pick. C1 2008-07-21_S721LH.j lH bWP put new markers in the northern half of this locus. We continued removing the natural accumulation, f29, to find a new feature under it, f42. It looks very compact, and similar to the floor accumulation , f34, above the floor, f39, in k23. We photographed the new feature, v24, so we could remove it -using the big pick. After removing the last mentioned feature, we found a new feature, f45. It`s a kind of highly compacted floor, type b, full of nodules and pottery sherds among reddish soil. It reminds us of the floor of k23, f39. So we took a new photo for it, v25. C1 2008-07-21_S721MO.j mO we saw new feature similar to f34 in k23 and in same elevation, we gave it new number f42. C1 2008-07-23_S724LH.j lH we stop excavating the northern half of this locus to preserve the floor which was discovered in it, f45, and which was covered by a floor accumulation was full of pottery sherds dated back to the Middle Assyrian period. After protecting the natural floor, f45 with sheets of plastic, we started digging natural accumulation, f29, in southern half of the locus to expose the natural floor, f45. Assuming that floor, f45 extends throughout the locus we will remove only the southern half to expose the staircase, f21. remove it in this half to follow the continuity of the staircase. C1 2008-07-24_S724LH1.j lH We are continuing removing the natural accumulation, f29, in the southern half of k34. The floor accumulation, f42, was excavated and then we cleaned the natural floor, f45, which extended across the entire locus, for a photograph, v43. Then, we began to excavate the floor, f45 in the southern half. Pickman kHussein noted that f45 was laminar, had been formed by successive actions of water, and highly compacted (sherds generally lay flat) by foot traffic. C1 2008-07-26_S726LH.j lH We focused on excavating the southern part, to keep the natural floor, f45, in the northern half for the moment. After removing the rest of the last mentioned feature in the southern half of this locus, we found a new feature that formed by lamination, f63. The collected pottery was various (dotted decoration, red slip, imitation metal ware..). C1 2008-07-28_S728LH.j lH We photographed this locus in v39, to show the sequnce of its features, the floor, f45, in the northern half of it, and the laminated natural accumulation, f63, in the southern half. Then we drew and photographed the section of the eastern baulk, w4 and v38. We did the same for the section of the northern baulk, w5 and v40. We drew and photographed The sections in order to remove the eastern baulk of this locus, which we started with after the breakfast. C1 2008-07-29_S729LH.j lH After removing the rest of the eastern baulk, we started to excavate the southern half of the baulk, where we found two new lines of stones, which form staircase, f21. The first step(which is the fourth in the staircase) is formed by three flat stones. It was distinguished by a horizontal circular hole in the western section - in the south half of the second stone face. The hole could have been previously used as a door socket or a pole to support a light roof. The hollowed stone may not be in situ, but reused. The second line of stones that formed the second newly descovered step, includes two stones, with a rough surface. To the west of the last mentioned step, which is the fifth step in the staircase, f21, we found a new feature, f70, under the lamination of f63. The new feature seems very compact and flat. Its elevation is 9090 which is the same as the top of the revetment wall, f3. We photographed the wide view, v44, of k24 and k34, and the relationships between the staircase and the floor which abuts it, f45. Then, we dug below the northern half of the eastern baulk of k34 and recovered new stones, that are a part of stone installation, f14, and located at the north border of the lowest step of staircase, f21. C1 2008-08-06_S806LH.j lH We started excavating the eastern baulk of this locus. We removed the topsoil, f55, and the upper natural accumulation, f59, as one feature, f103. We removed the natural accumulation of f94 as separate feature for chronological and pottery typological reasons. The last mentioned accumulation may be linked with the Middle Assyrian floor accumulation, f42, in k34. Tomorrow we will remove the Mittani features, f98 and f100, as a third separate feature. C1 2008-08-23_S824JW.j jW After a false start to excavate a 100cm-wide test trench along the staircase C1 2008-08-24_S824LH2.j lH We continued excavating the southern part of the lamination, f128, that abuts the last step of the staircase, f21. C1 2008-07-26_S726LH.j lH We started excavating its topsoil, f56, which looks chunky and soft. In the topsoil we found a distinctive pottery sherd, that is decorated with unclear shapes that might be part of scorpion or snake, q83. C1 2008-07-29_S729LH.j lH After removing the topsoil, f56, we found a natural accumulation, f68. The new feature was soft and chunky. In the western border of this locus we found a new line of stones, f71, that sits in the last mentioned accumulation. We photographed this new feature after cleaning it, v43. To the east of this stone installation we found a new layer that was full of fist-sized stones and pottery sherds. It may be a floor associated with stones, f71. C1 2008-08-02_S802LH.j lH After removing the natural accumulation, f75, which covered the stone installation, f91, that runs north-south in the middle of this locus, we noticed two separate natural accumulations - one on its eastern side, f93, and one on the western side, f92. We didn`t excavate the western natural accumulation, f92, today. So we started to remove the natural soft accumulation of f93 with the big pick. We uncoverd a new row of stones while excavating f93. After removing the natural accumulation of f93, which only covered the lower part of stone installation, f91, we found a new soft lamination, f95. The last mentioned feature is free of pottery sherds, pebbles and inclusions. C1 2008-08-03_S803LH.j lH We photographed the whole locus after cleaning it, v52, to show the relationship between the different levels of stone installations in it, f71, f73 and f91. We removed the rest of the compact lamination, f95, in the eastern border of this locus. Under the last mentioned feature we found a new layer, f97, of compact crust probably formed by melted brick. We stopped excavating in this locus, while waiting to remove the northern baulk in order to understand the relationship between the stone installations in k44 and k43. Excavating the western half of the last mentioned baulk would help us to explane the gap between the stones, f71, and the northern border, where we found a baked red mudbrick. Also the pottery sherds which we will collect may help us recognize the phase of the highest stone installations in k44, f28, and in k43, f71. C1 2008-08-18_S818JW.j jW Began to remove the north baulk as volumetric material, f156. Photographed north section, v91. C1 2008-08-19_S819JW.j jW Finished excavating the north baulk of this locus. We found that the stone installations f28 in k44 and f71 were linked by a threshold, f163. Although the bottom rows of stone installations f49 in k44 and f91 in k43 were continuous across the baulk, the top rows were not. C1 2008-08-27_S827LH.j lH We photographed the threshold, f163 (v112), that connects the stone installations, f28 and f49, in k44 from the stone installation, f71 and f91, in k43. It was expected to link the temple and the palace. C1 2008-07-18_S718LH.j lH We started to excavate its topsoil, f18, which looks like the topsoil of k34, f15, because both of them contain backfill from previous excavations. C1 2008-07-19_S719LH.j lH While we were removing the topsoil, f18, we found at the depth of about 15 cm, a burial, f27, that includes a skeleton of a child, i12 - associated with q30b -. It was located in the northeastern quadrant. The skull was directed to the west. The length of this skeleton is about 45 cm, the width of it about 15 cm. We took a photo for this burial befor, while and after drowing it, using the grade, v15, v17. In the western part of k44 we found a floor of stones in north-south direction, includes lime stones (15-47 cm length) and few basalt stones scattered among it. C1 2008-07-20_S720LH.j lH For the stone floor that we discovered in k44, we took a photo, v20, but we didn`t excavate this locus today. C1 2008-07-22_S722LH1.j lH We divided the locus into northern and southern half. Then we started excavating the northern half, and removing the natural accumulation, f47. In this accumulation, in the middle of the locus, we found a new floor of stones, f49, which is not related to the stone floor to the west of it, f28. There are two soil layers below the bottom of f28 and the top of f49. We noticed the layers in the section that goes under f28. The first layer is soft accumulation that comes directly under f28, and covers a crust that comes above the second stone floor, f49. Because we removed, f47, with the big pick, we didn`t notice that it was composed of the two layers mentioned above. After photographing the new features, we started to remove the natural accumulation, f47, in the southern part of this locus, and we found that the stones, f49, continued to the south baulk. C1 2008-07-22_S722MO.j mO We started dig the natural accumulation, f47. We discovered that the stones, f28 are not founded. In, f47, we discovered a group of stones, f49 situated in NS direction. C1 2008-07-23_S724LH.j lH We started to remove the western part of the natural accumulation, f47, to see the extent of the stone installation, f49. but we noticed that it doesn`t continue toward the west. When removing the eastern part of the last mentioned natural accumulation, we exposed another layer of stones that co-located under the stones of f49. To the west also we found another step of stones under the top of f49, but deeper by about 20cm. The rest of the square at the eastern baulk seemed empty from any new line of stones, after testing it with the shish, we photographed the evidence in this locus, v30. C1 2008-07-24_S724LH1.j lH We removed the natural accumlation, f57, in the eastern baulk of this locus. Under the last mentioned feature, we found a new feature that looks like the floor accumulation, f42, in k34. The new floor accumulation have been labled as f58. The floor did really appeared at the southwestern corner of this locus, f60. We gave the triangular shap that was formed from the natural accumulation, f47, between the stone pathes, f28 and f49, a new feature number, f61. Then we took a photo for the new features in this locus, v33. C1 2008-07-26_S726LH.j lH We didn`t excavate it today, but we tested the sections below the stone installations, f28, and f49. We found out that: the eastern section below f28 consists of two different accumulations, the first higher one, f47, looks soft and powdery, the underneath one, f61, looks very compact. As to f49, the eastern section shows that it is made of two sets of stones, one atop the other. The western section indicates that the stones, f49, are on one layer under which is a compact soil feature, f61, that is disturbed by rodents. C1 2008-07-28_S728LH.j lH We started our day with photographing the features of k44, v35 and v36, to study the foundations of the stone installation. C1 2008-08-03_S803LH.j lH We started to remove the eastern baulk of this locus in order to have a wide view for the loci k24, k34 and k44. This can help us to understand the relationship among the staircase, f21; the flat empty space, f70, in k34; and the stone installations, f49 and f28, in k44. We divided the baulk into three parts to collect pottery that will help understand the transition between Middle Assyrian phase and the Mittani phase. The top layers of late accumulation (f15, 17, and f29) were removed as one feature, f96. The middle Assyrian accumulation, f42, will be removed as a separate feature tomorrow. Also the Mittani features, f45 and f63 will be removed as separate features tomorrow. C1 2008-08-04_S804LH.j lH We continued removing the eastern baulk of this locus. So we removed the rest of the natural accumulation, f96, which was originally three different accumulations(f15, f17, f29). Then we removed the floor accumulation, f42, as a separate feature. Also the highly compact floor, f45, was removed as a separate feature. We started to excavate the compact lamination of f63 as another separate feature, and we are going to remove the rest of it tomorrow. C1 2008-08-05_S805LH.j lH We removed the rest of the hard crusted lamination, f63, in the eastern baulk of this locus. After cleaning, We photographed, v60, the wide view of the staircase in k24(f14, f21), the hard crust, f70, in k34 and the stone installations(f28, f49) in k44. C1 2008-08-27_S827LH.j lH We removed a small step of two accumulations (the natural floor, f60 and the natural accumulation, f180) from the east edge of the locus. We discovered a tannur and large smashed pot along the western edge of f180. Due to time constraints in 2008, excavation was halted near the surface. C1 2008-07-20_S720LH.j lH We opened a new locus, k54, to the west of k44; then we started to remove the topsoil, f32, after we took a photo for it, v19. Under the topsoil we noticed a new natural accumulation, f35, and under this accumulation was a hard crust of melted brick, f36. C1 2008-07-21_S721LH.j lH We removed the rest of the natural accumulation, f35, in the northern half of the locus - using the big pick. Using the small pick, we started to remove the crust, f36. Then we found in the southwestern quadrant a new compact feature, f44. It is a natural accumulation that is free of pottery sherds and pebbles. In the northeastern quadrant, there is a line of stones, f40, 140 cm long that goes toward the west. The line has more than eight stones (15-30 cm length). C1 2008-07-21_S721MO.j mO we dug in two parts; the first one is f36 which is crust. The second part is f35 (natural accumulation). We found new compact accumulation in the SW corner and we see the same accumulation in the SW corner of k44 covering the stones, f28. C1 2008-07-22_S722LH1.j lH We continued removing the natural accumulation, f44, but we didn`t remove the stones of f40. Under the last mentioned feature, we found a hard, compact crust. Lots q55 and q58 came frome above the crust. Lot q61 came from under the crust, and was sent to mKB for analysis because it might contain Middle Assyrian pottery. C1 2008-08-18_S818JW.j jW Photographed the halted excavation, v95. Placed plastic sheeting on the bottom and began to backfill it using soil from a number of loci under excavation. B11 2009-03-18_T318JW1.j jW An irregularly shaped polygon whose NW corner is m4966. This locus was excavated to clear sightlines into J5 from an observation platform built directly to the southwest. C1 2008-08-06_S807JW.j jW Excavated the baulk, f110, consisting of previously documented layers of soil which formed the locus, to a depth of 40cm below the surface. C1 2008-08-06_S807JW.j jW Removed approximately 40cm of the stepped baulk line using workmen from J1. C1 2008-08-09_S809JW.j jW Workmen temporarily detailed from J1 excavated natural accumulation, f110 in this locus. About 30cm were removed before they departed. C1 2008-08-13_S813JW.j jW A crew from A20 resumed the excavation of the volumetric material, f110. C1 2008-08-16_S816JW.j jW We continued to excavate natural accumulation, f110. It is very similar to natural accumulation, f136, in the adjacent locus, k32. C1 2008-08-17_S817JW.j jW We continued to excavate natural accumulation, f110. We need to adjust the north and south borders of this locus to improve the sight-lines from the observation platform. C1 2008-08-18_S818JW.j jW We exended the locus to the southwest by 150cm to improve the sightlines from the new observation platform south of k32. C1 2008-08-19_S819JW.j jW Two crews excavated here, removing the projections to the northeast of the locus in preparation for excavating f157 to find the eScarpment linking units J5 and J1. We found two rows of stones. Unfounded f155, running northeast to southwest off the corner of revetment wall, f3, and f161, running north to south. C1 2008-08-21_S821JW.j jW Finished excavating the northern projections of unexcavated baulks, f110. Near the south face of revetment wall, f3, continued to excavate natural accumulation, f157, to find the escarpment which we have found to the west, f74, which abuts wall f41 and to the east, features 189 and 239 in unit J1. gB believes that we will have to dig deepaer to reach it since it slopes severely from northeast to southwest and from north to south. C1 2008-08-24_S824LH2.j lH We started digging the topsoil, f159, of the southwestern extension of this locus in order to see the stone structures in k22, k23 and k24 more clearly from the Panorama to the south of J5. C1 2008-08-25_S825LH1.j lH The strategy of the last three excavation days includes digging the southern edge of this locus to make it sloping. This work required extending the southern edge of k11 about 1m towards the south, so the slop can be done. The slope was done at the end of the excavation time today, with extention includes the southern edge of the southwest triangle of this locus (temporarily identified as locus 31) that had been removed for better view from the panorama to the south of J5. C1 2008-08-25_S825LH1.j lH We removed the rest of the northeastern triangle (temporarily identified as locus 31) which we started digging yesterday for a better view from the panorama which is to the south of J5. Then we extended its southern edge 1 m to the south, in order to make it sloping at the same angle of the southeastern edge slope of formerly excavated parts of this locus. C1 2008-08-26_S826LH.j lH we removed the eastern part which used to be part of J1. The hight of this part is about three meters from the natural accumulation of f158 which coveres the compact floor accumulation, f169, that coveres the escarpment of the revetment wall in k12. Removing this part was in order to build a staircase that leads from the plaza near the revetment wall in J1 to the additional revetment wall, f3, and the stone structures in J5. C1 2008-08-27_S827LH.j lH We removed the rest of volumetric accumulation, f159, in the eastern part of the upper step of this locus. We also removed the rest of the volumetric accumulation, f174, in the eastern part of the lower step of this locus. C2 2008-08-18_S818JW.j jW We will dig out the northeast teeth to within 100cm of the old baulk line. Also, we will excavate the northeastern two thirds of the southwest extension to the level already excavated along the northeastern edge. Then, we will slope the remaing 50cm slice from the surface on the southwest to the lower level to the northeast. C1 2008-08-25_S825LH1.j lH The test probe which we oppened it yesterday, f166, to the north and above the revetment wall, turned to be a new locus, k102. we continued excavating this test probe in order to collect more pottery sherds that might be found among the big limestones and under the fist-sized stones of this locus. Unfortunately, we didn`t find any new evidence or any new pottery sherds that might help at the chronological understanding or the typological analysis. C1 2008-08-26_S826LH.j lH After we removed the granular accumulation, f171, which used to spread all over this test prob, we found more than fife big limestones. Among the last mentioned stones there is the reddish granular accumulation, f175. We collected small amount of pottery sherds from the accumulation of f175, so we extended the borders of this locus towards the north about 70 cm in order to collect more pottery sherds that might help at the chronological understanding of what we presume the original revetment wall in k12. The soft chunkey natural accumulation of the new part, f176, didn`t give us enough pottery sherds. So we removed one of the big limestones in the middle of this locus to collect more sherds from the reddish granular accumulatin, f178, under that stone. We covered this locus with plastic bag at the end of our excavation day to protect it from the derts during the night. Tomorrow we will put the stone which we removed today back above a plastic bag. C1 2008-08-27_S827LH.j lH We completed excavation and backfilled the locus. Dug the natural accumualtions, f182 and f183, in the eastern extention in order to obtain pottery for analysis of the phase when that part of the revetment wall, f3, was built. After the backfill, jW noticed that there was a layer of reddish material (excavated in a previous season and showing on an adjacent east baulk) which would have covered the stones of this locus. C3 2008-08-27_S827LH.j lH This red covering was similar to the baqaya glacis as it met the revetment wall in the excavations in J3 to the east. Since all evidence there pointed to wall construction in Phase 1, we can assume the same situation existed in the vicinity of k102 and that this portion of the revetment wall was also built in Phase 1. It has an east baulk conforming to the Mozan grid separating it from locus k106. The purpose of this baulk is to preserve a section prependicular to the revetment walls. C2 2009-08-08_T808JW.j jW The issue in this locus is to determine how the shape of the architecture of the construction in the periods Early Dynastic through Mittani were influenced by the shape of the preexisting mound in the Late Chalcolithic period. A wall of cut stones, f41, is the key to this analysis. We cannot sink a probe behind it or in front of it because later structures would be damaged. However, we can examine floor surfaces which either abut or whose eastward extensions were cut by later construction. Hopefully the earliest of these floors will have been constructed about the same time as the f41 wall. So far we have removed floor f74, which abutted f41 and contained Mittani ceramics. We have exposed a stepped stone structure, f205, which was covered by f74 in the vicinity of f41. Farther west from the wall, f74 covered an accumulation, f244 over a rough sherd and pebble floor, f246. This floor was roughly horizontal and abuts the second of the f205 "steps." Under and along the southeastern edge of f246 there are two hard surfaces which slope down from east to west. It is possible that these are earlier escarpments to f41. We will expose all of one floor surface before proceeding to excavate the next. Pottery from each floor and its floor accumulation will be sent to mKB for special analysis.
