.bk A09 .fl J622jlw.j .fd daily journal .ei jlw .ei J622 .rd J621 .ri jlw f 74 df ac ds brickmelt, formed by trapped sediment washed down the wadi. Dense, fine grains with pottery and stone inclusions. c# 10YR7/2 co light gray f 76 df ac ds a mixture of f74 accumulation and large pieces of reddish brick, Munsell 7.5YR6/6, reddish yellow. Found in k5, a probe deeper into the north part of k4. c# 10YR7/2 co light gray f 87 df ac ds a mixture of f74 accumulation and large pieces of reddish brick, at least one of which is partially burned. -sr identical to f 76 f 88 df ly ds ash layer between two accumulations, both reddish, the topmost of which (f87) has inclusions of brick. c# 10YR6/2 co light brownish gray -sr possibly linked to f99, which can be seen in the section of the east baulk of k5. f 89 df bks ds a number of bricks, one burned, piled haphazardly. Edges eroded and not distinguishable. Possibly from fallen wall. c# 7.5YR7/2 co reddish yellow f 90 df ac ds rubble and associated material surrounding stub wall f15. Includes material from tomb bricks and wadi accumulation. Seal came from here. f 91 df ac ds soil, mostly brickmelt, in south baulk at eastern end. f 92 df w ds small stub wall running east-west, under f15 and on top of f1. 106cm long x 55 cm wide x 50 cm high. 5 courses of 15 cm x 15 cm x 10 cm brown bricks. f 93 df w ds north-south wall stub, 125 cm long by 165 cm wide, jutting from north kitchen wall, A6f78. Red brick. -sr some 1997 records are not available on site. We believe that this is probably f1, but we can't be absolutely certain. f 94 df bfill ds soil used to cover plastic sheeting protecting last surfaces excavated in 1997. nr some sherds but no provenience. f 101 df ac ds moist, greasy (clumps when squeezed) soil with charcoal inclusions. Non-uniform hardness with some soft pockets. Large amounts of pottery suggests dump. c# 10YR6/3 co pale brown (when dry, but darker when wet) f 95 df ac ds soil in higher regions of south baulk of k3. Mostly wadi wash and surface soil. -wk 4 large picks and 14 in support. -dy have half crews deployed in both k3 and k4. We are excavating the western quadrant of this large locus to level all parts to the same elevation in preparation for a major push to get to the earliest AK level. We are excavating k3, which is presently one meter higher, as quickly as possible to also get to the same level, slowing to explore the few features we are finding in what appears to have been a dumping area for houses to the west and perhaps the east. .rd J622 .ri jlw -wk 5 large picks and 14 in support -sg today we will continue to excavate k3 as quickly as possible. We will explore the brick/gypsum-like materiel (f105), then remove it. Also, to employ the workforce more efficiently, we will continue to excavate the west quadrant of k4 to level the locus. f 105 df ly ds rectangular patch (180 cm N-S by 110 cm E-W) of bricky material and packed earth covered with a thin coating of gypsum-like material. Originally, I believed this may have been a floor, but I now conclude it was more likely a patch of discarded building material. f 106 df pt ds collection of ashy material and a large quantity of bone in the far NW corner of quadrant 4 of k4. It also extends farther to the west into A2. q 229 nr some bone material from f106 was put into this q-lot (associated with f104, which was immediately adjacent). We did not immediately recognize that f106 was a refuse pit until the large quantity of bone and pottery caught our attention. The ash was more concentrated in the lower levels of f106. f 104 df ad ds soil the color of f101 but with fewer soft spots and more brick chunks. When scraped, it comes off the trowel in very fine grains; however the surface still has the shiny, greasy texture just as it is scraped, probably due to the high moisture content. No discernible change in baulk section. c# 10YR4/4 co dark yellowish brown (when damp) f 106 df ac ds mixture of soil and ash layers, particularly in NW corner. f 63 df st-is ds typical of those used for foundations, but completely isolated and out of place. Approximately rectangular (70x45x20cm). Inspected for man-made designs, etc. on back, but found none. f 107 df pt ds refuse pit, apparently shallow, cut into f74 at the west edge of quadrant 4, k4. Bottom is at about the same elevation as f76, the last full soil layer excavated in k5 in 1997. Found large quantities of ash, animal bone and pottery, particularly near the bottom. k 3 dy most of the day was spent investigating small, thin areas of brick-like material, mostly in places where we were not expecting to find structural walls. There was a large, thin layer of ash in most of the locus, which seemed to be associated with a lens of densely charred material in the west baulk, which will be explored later in section. At the end of the day, we found another area of more reddish soil along the east baulk, a place where we most probably would expect a major wall to be located.
