.bk A09 .fl L704jlw.j .fd daily journal for L704, L703(part), and L623 .ei jlw .ed L704 .rd L703 .ri vp k 10 sg we will continue to clean the SW corner of k10 to see the bricks of f211; then, we will take relays of the architecture in the SW corner. Also, Ali will contine to dig the NE corner to explore the structure of the brickwork there. dy Tariq cleaned very well features f235, f230 and f211 in the SW and helped vp prepare for the relays. Ali dug the accumulation, f214 in the NE corner of the north baulk to expose the many phases of brickwork there. He cleaned sections in the N, E, and W sides as he had dug from the south. In the NW corner of the section, we could see that the wall foundation, f231, had turned to the west, confirming evidence seen when we were excavating the floor, f251, in the SE quarter of k11. We cleaned for a more clear exploration in the morning light. .rd L704 k 10 sg we will continue to dig only the NE corner to see better the sections N and W of the baulk trench. Also we will become clear the situation in the corner between the W side of N-S wall, f231, and the N baulk, where the 1990 excavators left some accumlation, which they assumed was brick. dy Ali cut very well the the section S of the left over accumulation between f231 and the N baulk, and with Tariq saw there some bricks. Then, they both, with vp, took the measures of the top and compared them with the f231 width. The width of it, with the addition of the E-W brick width, f243, was the same; therefore we conclude that it is a corner. Then, Ali dug the accumulation, f214, for about 20cm to see well the N and W sections of the trench. During the dig, he found an E-W rodent hole, f262, in the middle of f214, that conuued west under the f231 wall until about the middle of the locus. .ri jlw -wk 6 picks and 19 in support. Reviewed the procedure for picking up and returning tools at the beginning and the end of the work day. k 11 sg we need to do some touch up work to assist in our understanding of the phases of construction and use of the walls and floors previously excavated. We must also remove the north baulk and finish excavating the west side of the pit, a29, which was cut by foundation, f231. dy we clarified the small westward addition, f258, to wall, f228. Possibly it is a jamb for a door, but it is only about 30 cm tall, making that use unlikely. The east side of wall, f228, is definitely cut by foundation, f225, but there is no evidence that it continues or turns on the eastern side of f225. Therefore it is possibly that f228 is a curtain wall serving some purpose in an open courtyard. The presence of the unused tannur on the northern side supports this, but the gypsum-like particles on floor, f247, argues for an interior function. Cleaning of the NE corner of the baulk following the removal of the pit, a29, revealed that there may have been an eastern leg of the N-S oriented foundation, f231. We found more of floor, f247. f 222 df fi ds found a thin layer of crumbly reddish brown material at the bottom of the pit. The fill was free of ash. Excavated by Suliman P2 L704. i 119 df hb ds found one proximal end of either femur or humerus. Carefully searched vicinity for signs of more bones or evidence of burial, but found none. We concluded that this was a fragment washed out a grave elsewhere and deposited by runoff. We decided not to call for the assistance of individuals from the Como Institute who are here to study faunal and botanical remains. k 14 sg continue to dig in the northern half and the SW quarter of the locus to expose more architecture. dy carefully excavated about 20 cm of accumulation from around brickwork, f255. Anwar and Mizer found a line of bricks, f263, extending west from the NW corner of f255. f 259 df w ds E-W mud brick wall just south of the N baulk in the eastern portion of k10. It may be associated with N-S wall, f231. Dug by Ali f 260 df ac ds accumulation under floor, f247 in k11 N of wall f228. It is difficult to tell whether it is packing under f247 or just another layer of that feature that did not get sprinkled with gypsum. Dug by Suliman. f 261 df a ds accumulation in the North baulk of k11, under accumlation f236, W of foundation, f225. Dug by Tariq. f 262 df rh ds rodent burrow running E-W beginning in the far NE corner of k10 and extending through wall, f231, and turning southward across to the middle of the locus. It appears to be the size that a gerbil might make. f 263 df bkg ds a single line of bricks, extending west about 2 meters from the SW corner of the brickwork, f255. .rd L623 -wk 4 picks and 7 in support reported for work. -sg after cleaning the site, we will begin excavation in k22, which is immediately to the north of the deep excavation, k9, where we found two levels of post-palace buildings during MZ12, and immediately to the east of the step-trench excavations in A2 of 1990. -dy removed all weeds from the area to be excavated this season. k 22 dy after reming topsoil, f195, we immediately began to see evidence of living spaces. These included a mud brick surface, f197, a layer of stones and sherds, f196 and a hard layer of accumulation, f198, all in the northern two-thirds of the locus. A softer accumulation, f199, was located in the southern third. f 195 df ts ds topsoil layer about 5cm deep in k22. Soil moist, with clumps and roots. P2 L623 f 196 df ly ds layer of stones and sherds in NE corner of k22. Stones range from fist to melon size. f 197 df bkg ds single layer of bricks in NW corner of k22. Function unknown. f 198 df a ds very dense and fine-grained E-W band across the middle third of k22, south of bricks, f197, and layer, f196 in k22. f 199 df a ds accumulation below topsoil, f195, in southern third of k22. Soft in some places.
