.bk A9 .fl L923jw.j .fd daily journal for L712 .ei jlw .ed L923 .rd L923 .ri jlw -su there was a three-day period from 12-15 July when jlw, the unit supervisor, worked primarily at home to assist the other units in using AutoCAD. During that time vp was the principal on-site supervisor. jlw visited often, but for short periods of time. Preparation of daily journals was postponed. However, because we kept detailed notes, the journals that follow for this period reflect accurately what occurred. .rd L712 -wk 6 picks and 18 in support reported for work. -dy deployed half, under the supervision of Anwar and Mizar, to A7 to begin removing the covering from the Phase 4 buildings in preparation for kite photographs of A7, A9 and A11 which we expect will illustrate the links between the settlement sectors that we have found to date. k 22 dy began to remove the architecture that was immediately beneath the topsoil when the locus was first excavated in the first days of the season. Removed wall, f197, stone and sherd layer, f196 and what we believed at the time to be an accumulation, f198. Now, there is some indication that it may be part of a pise foundation or platform, some of which are found in other Khabur settlements on the tell. Also began to remove accumulation f199 in the south half of the locus, which was considerably softer than f198. New features include a hard accumulation, f293, in the north half, in which is a softer pocket of accumulation, f293. In the SE corner, just under f199, there is an E-W line of bricks, f296 which runs along the south baulk. k 11 dy attempted to define brickwork in the north baulk that would possibly be the last of the Phase 4 architecture before the Khabur pise foundations directly above were installed. Found what at first appeared to be several layers of bricks, f295, which had been cut by later Khabur pits in several places. Overall it gives the impression of a living surface or platform, rather than a wall. Further observation revealed that this feature is most likely a mud cement platform/foundation. f 293 df a ds accumulation beneath f196, f197 and f198 in the north half of k22. It is very pale brown which is in the range of both the color of the soil beneath the topsoil on this part of the tell and the color of mudbricks used in walls and platforms. It is very hard and may possibly be either a mud cement platform or a wall foundation. It has a softer pocket of the same kind of material, f294 in the center. f 294 df a ds a relatively soft patch of accumulation contained within a roughly semi-circular shallow pocket centered in f293 with the flat part touching the north baulk in the north half of k22. f 295 df foun ds mass of hard, uniformly dense material in the west part of the north baulk of k11. From the top down, it looked as if there were several rows of bricks on top. This may have been the case, and when seen in section in the west baulk there are bricks just under the topsoil which sit atop a cement foundation. However, the elevation of the bottom of the bricks is above the top of this feature. Therefore jlw concludes that what we are seeing is the eastward extent of the foundation, not brickwork. The relationship, if any with platform/wall a25 is not clear. This feature may be a southern extension of a25 or a platform from a different Phase. jlw favors the latter interpretation because no Khabur pottery was found with this feature whereas there was Khabur ware in and around a25 to the north at a somewhat higher elevation. f 296 df bkg ds line of bricks along the south baulk in the SE quadrant of k22 that seems to contrast in color with an accumulation just to the north in which can be seen pebbles and sherds.
