have been excavating in both the north half of k27 and cutting away half of the southern baulk, saving samples of soil from every layer for analysis by Professor Castelleti and revealing a fresh baulk face. The new face is actually quite beautiful, and contains many details previously unobserved, such as the white area at the top of f259. -sg We will continue cutting back the baulk. Not only do we want to get a column of soil samples for lc to analyze, but we also want to see a fresh, complete section. Given that the baulk might not survive another winter's rains, we need to get as much information from it as possible. q 828 nd At m2703 79-118, we found a large number of bones, apparently animal. Whether it is an isolated carcass or another bone layer is as yet unknown. However, given the large size of the pelvis and the small size of the jaw, jff believes that they are not from the same animal. Also, the ^a around the bones is much dirtier, containing seed, pottery, and a number of medium-sized stones. Could this be fill? It also resembles f347, higher up, which contained a thick layer of bone. Some pieces from the bones are in the bone bag for this q-lot. f 368 tc co f369 .rd L726 f 373 ds This feature encompasses all of f351 south of the trench f368 and f369. However, since the area was so mixed by the rain, I decided to relabel it with a different feature number to keep the well-stratified (f351) and poorly stratified (f373) separate. .rd L729 -dy Could the circle be an original well with the square added on later? .rd L722 -dy Today, we removed the bones in f369 and continued excavating down. Yesterday, we switched from the east side of the baulk (k27) to the west (k26), to prevent the height differential between the two halves from becoming too great, leading to a collapse. -sg We will continue excavating in k27, until we uncover the red layer, f371. f 369 df a ds This feature was very dirty, with sherds, large bones, pieces of tannur, clay lumps, and medium-sized rocks. It included the very thick bone layer. .rd L724 f 369 dy This feature continues to confuse me. Parts of it seems to lie on top of f371, others on top of f372. In the north-west, we have detected a ring of gravel-like material, possibly the lowest level of the fissure observed so far. The soil continues to maintain its fill-like quality, including more large bones, ash, and possibly even pieces of unburnt wood included among the ash. f 370 ds This is the small brown layer over f304 in the west. To my knowledge, it was never assigned a feature number during season 13. f 371 ds This is the red layer with white inclusions observed under f369 in k27. Right now, it seems to occupy only the western half of the locus and to slope down to the west and south. f 372 ds This is a series of water laminations observed east of f371, under f369.
