Having removed f384 and f397, we continued down in f392 until we reached red bricky chunks (f371, presumably) and laminations (f372) below that. We have proceeded to uncover the laminations as much as possible and are trying to follow them, layer by layer, across the square. The laminations form a good chronological seal, and at present we are intending to stop excavating this season as soon as we have leveled out the locus. .ri ms f 396 27 a m2937 47-137 M917 ms 397 27 f m2937 42-137 M917 ms .ri jl f 396 ds This was a grainy layer found in k27 in the east half of the locus, underneath f392. For a while, we thought that it was f372, since the top had a series of very nice layers, visible clearly in section. However, the material which composed the layers was very different from that of f372; whereas f372 was claylike and gummy, f396 was very brittle and grainy. It was composed of brown soil, but also had many small but visible pebbles within it, like bits of coarse sand that had become trapped within it. It could be rolled into small pellets while moist, but crumbled easily. Large quantities of soil have been saved. f 397 ds This is a white layer discovered in f372, in the southwest part of k27. It slopes very gently to the west. Whether it is just one of the layers within f372, or whether it marks something more important, is as yet unsure. .ri ms list2 q df ht J2 w1 w2 wm sh co nd 960.1 si found in sherd bag 964.3 la found in sherd bag endlist q 983 pb 372 27 r701 342S 100W m2937 57 152 11 lamination level 984 pib 396 27 r703 140S 203E m2937 47 137 5 grainy level 985 pi 396 27 r704 156S 183E m2937 43 138 2 grainy clay loam area 986 pbi 372 27 r705 156S 230W m2937 43 138 2 removing laminations to f397 .ri dc 987 pi 395 27 r706 25E 140S m2937 59 137 2 ashy layer .ri ms 988 pb 371 27 r707 110E 90N m2937 43 137 2 red bricky layer list2 q df ht J2 w1 w2 wm sh co nd 984.1 la obsidian chunk 985.1 sh thin, rough flake of some material, possibly shell? 985.2 cl clay lump(?) 987.1 la basalt? 986.1 sm burnt wheat/grain in the ground 987.2 ma piece of bronze 986.2 sm soil sample containing possible pieces of wheat or grain 986.3 sm soil sample containing possible pieces of wheat or grain endlist v 215 S gk27 south baulk 215a t S gk27 south baulk, east edge 215b t S gk27 gf326,367 south baulk, west edge, showing mud ledge and fissure 216 OV gk27 gf372,397 white layer in laminations 217 SE gk27 gf392
