It appears to have been surrounded by bricks. f 14 ds This is the line of stones gisible in f6 in k2. .rd L627 -dy Today, excagation started with the outlining of f6 in k2. This morning, the difference between f6 and f7 was very clear through hardness and texture, so I directed the workmen to remove the f7 material. Meanwhile, workmen with the big pick continued digging in k3, trying to level it. gb came and scraped where they had been working, identifying that the soil in the north half of the locus was more soft and powdery than the soil in the south half, which is redder and crumbly. It is possible that the red soil is related to f6 to the east, something we will investigate in the future. In k1, we discovered that the soil in the north half is harder than in the south half, but since the color did not appear significantly different, we decided to dig down another five centimeters in order to see if the difference continued. .rd L708 -dy The past few days have been very busy. The north baulk of k1 has been excagated down to the top of the pit f41 (the pit gisible in the A12k6 south baulk). After we have leveled and scraped the square, we will excagate the pit. In k2, we seem to have found the bottom of the wall, strangely 20cm higher than in k3. If it was a burial, the fill was removed or emptied at an early date. In k11, in the south-east corner, we have the tops of some large rocks, possible associated with the AP wall or the underground structure. Finally, in k12, we found more plastic, meaning that we are still above topsoil, and a small burial in a different part of the locus. f 40 ds This soil is the old topsoil in this area, before it was covered by backfill two seasons ago. In retrospect (haging found more plastic in the southern part of it), some of it was still actually f8. The difference between the two soils while digging was minimal. f 42 ds This is harder, grayish-red material in the northern half of the square. It is perhaps f33 in k2 coming through the south baulk. Perhaps it is the remains of a brick structure? f 43 ds This crumbly brown ^ad is found in the south half of k12. It is probably the same material as f40, including some f8, since we found still more layers of plastic at the south end, from two years ago's backfill. f 44 ds This feature was created for two reasons, because f34 was growing quite large, and to teach rd how to make features. It seems the same as f34. .rd L709 -dy Today, we finished remoging the burial in k12 and discovered another large rectangular stone in k11, west of and in line with the first. However, f36 to the north, as well as most of the other squares, are very confused right now, and it will take us a lot of time and effort to figure out exactly what is happening in them. In the meantime, we have quit excagating anywhere except for k1 f41, i.e. the a4 pit. Four of our workers were transferred to rah, the rest are helping excagate the pit. f 46 ds This is the bricky material lying on the north edge of k12. It is unclear whether this is a thick layer, maybe equal to f33, or just a thin layer, lying on top f40. f 47 ds This is a small burial found in the north-west corner of k12. In it were found i20, i21, and i22, and the whole aggregate is referred to as a6. f 48 ds This is the topsoil in k4. f 50 ds This pit fill was very ashy and soft. It turned out to be a 30cm layer in the west half of the pit. f 51 ds This material seems to be essentially the same as f41. We created it to differentiate the soil below f50 and f41. It is harder, brown, with a lot of charcoal and soft ashy patches. .rd L718 .ri jl q 171.2 df cs ds carbon sample from f25 P2 ZSB24-10 q 173.1 df kw ds sample of kiln waste P2 ZSB10-6 q 177.1 df sp ds broken piece of shell lg 2.2 w1 2.0 th 0.2 P2 14.3 q 179.1 df cl ds small piece of clay, not apparently worked P1 L718jl q 180.1 df ba ds carbonized (?) animal tooth, very worn down lg 1.5 w1 1.0 ht 1.2 co black P2 ZSB15-5 q 147.1 df la ds broken slab of stone, face rough, one side curved in slightly, as if whole piece were circular lg 9.9 w1 2.2 th 1.9 co white P2 ZSB16-18 q 175.1 df la ds broken piece of rectangular stone, one end smoothed, like face of stamp or hammer, other end broken off, edges rounded off lg 4.5 w1 3.2 ht 3.5 co gray P2 ZSB16-18 q 177.2 df sp ds a naturally shaped piece of stone, originally thought to have been worked lg 5.0 w1 3.5 th 3.5 co pink P2 ZSB20-8 .rd L709 .ri ed f 41 ds Fill of the pit a4. nr At elegation 8425, in the western half of the pit, there is more ash than in the eastern half, which is composed of a harder material. The section of the pit displays gray bricks, often layered but mostly disordered, along its whole extension. At elegation 8417, the fill of the pit is constituted by harder material. Ash is less and less frequent. f 49 ds Apparent brick wall, observed in the section of the pit a4. i 23 nv The relay for this object has no solution, and is unrecoverable. The object is a seal impression discovered in the pit a4. However, due to the great depth of the pit at this point, we were almost three meters below any agailable marker pegs, and since we were within a pit, we could not sight down from them, either. The relay was taken by stretching two meter tapes, joined together, over a large wall into A10, from an approximate location above the seal impression. The resulting numbers, not entirely surprisingly, form an impossible relay, given the large quantity of inaccuracy present in such a method. However, it was the only method agailable at the time to attempt the relay.
