Muhammad Kher excused at 1130 for personal business. -eq lost use of one wheelbarrow due to bad wheel. -sf gm worked the last two hours at home. -sy bp installed and surveyed points for k22. -sn gm drew a N section of k4, roughly the same as had served as the N baulk of k4 last season. It is based on an excavated area which extended 250cm to the N of the S baulk and was 400cm wide along the N-S axis. Elevation of the string was m3474+93-134 = 8268. -sg early in the day, gb, fab, gm and jw briefly reviewed progress for the week and discussed what needed to be done to maintain the schedule of understanding what activities and structures were a part of the abi and platform precinct. Work was suspended in k13, upon reaching the level marking the end of the sling ball manufacturing area. The team working here will be shifted to begin excavating k22, the last full square to the west of the abi entrance. After the section for the N baulk of k4 has been drawn, we will begin to remove it so that we can better trace the horizontal brick surface, f199, and the horizontal pise surface, f213, found along the far north edge of the locus yesterday and today. In k15 we will try to resolve the issue as to the source of the large quantity of Ph 2 pottery in a place and elevation where we would have expected to see Nuzi ware. In k14 we will excavate two pits, a15 and a16, found respectively in the NW and SE corners of the locus. We will finish excavating the pise floor surface,f213, in the E end of the N baulk of k4. -dy throughout the unit we are trying to find evidence of human activity that has not been obliterated by the gully wash. In the north baulk of k4/k3, we have found a pise floor upon which sit jars, bronze and grindstones. In k15, we have finished excavating a layer in which were found a large number of vessels with string-cut bases. The material beneath has far fewer sherds, only one of which had a base which was of the ring design. We paused excavating in k13, having reached the end of the accumulation which yielded the large number of clay projectiles. We began excavating k22 after breakfast. k4 is the most complex active locus, having two pits and a surface of stones sherds and material resembling deteriorated brick. k 4 dy gm drew section in preparation for baulk removal on Sunday. Abd el Karim finished tracing the tamped mud floor, f213, which extends E from a large stones, f190, to a previously excavated section to the east. The pickman who excavated the section did not recognize the floor, which appears as a thin horizontal line as one looks west. A number of clay vessels, a piece of bronze, and two grindstones were found resting on the floor and removed to the house for analysis after being relayed. sg we will remove the north baulk and resume excavation of k4, where, from the sections already visible, we expect to find little until we reach the level of floor f213, stone f190, stones f198, and bricks f199, all of which are at the same approximate elevation. a 13 df pt ds pit was also named a5 in MZ16. a 15 df pt ds deep pit cut, f214, with ashy fill, f203, in the NW corner of k14. Today, it yielded a q-lot of sherds and a seal impression which was sent to mkb for analysis. The pottery lot will also be tagged for analysis. a 16 df pt ds very shallow pit cut, f215, with ashy fill, f206. No artifacts. Fortunately it was relayed before being inadvertently excavated along with the surrounding accumulation, f205. P1 O701 f 215 df cut ds cut for shallow pit in SE corner of k14, detected only by arc of ashy fill, f206. tc in f205 f 214 df cut ds cut for deep pit in NW corner of k14. tc cu f202 f 203 df fi ds ashy fill for deep pit, a quarter of which is seen in the NW corner of k14. Yielded a seal impression which may be useful in determining the stratum of the deposit. tc si f214 f 206 df fi ds ashy fill for shallow pit in the SE corner of k14. tc si f215 P1 O701 k 14 dy continued to trace the extent of a layer of grayish hard material, f216, having inclusions of fist-sized stones and larger, seemingly bounded on the W and S by what may be deteriorated brick. Removing overlaying grayish material in the NE quadrant, f202, and abutting reddish material to the W and S, f205. Excavated pit, a16 in the SE corner and began to excavate a much deeper pit, a15, in the NW corner, stopping at a depth of about 100cm because of cramped quarters for pickman. jw looked at extant section below the current level of f205, and saw no signs of walls or floors in the first 50cm. f 216 df ly ds layer of hard grayish soil with a many sherds and large, smooth stones as inclusions. At some places, particularly along the E edge, it resembled a row of bricks. Possibly it is a path. k 13 dy momentarily stopped excavating in this locus, after reaching the bottom of the deposits containing the projectiles, f189 and f191. Photographed and removed as a sample a small mound of clay similar to that used in the projectiles that was found in the center of the putative fabrication/storage area. k 23 dy opened this locus and made several pickruns through topsoil/recent gully wash. k 15 dy ceased finding the large concentration of vessels with string-cut bases in accumulation, f201. Will flag q-lots for further analysis by mkb. Changed accumulation feature to f207, although soil color and texture was similar. f 204 df ts ds topsoil on the surface of k23. Probably reflects a mix of gully wash from recent seasons interleaved with seasonal root growth and decay. f 205 df a ds accumulation to E of hard packed layer of soil, sherds and stones, f216, in the N center of k14. f 207 df a ds accumulation in the entire k15 below the accumulation f201 which yielded the copious amounts of ceramics with string-cut bases. Feature was changed when the ceramic type changed. f 208 df vm ds gully wash from this year which appears atop the topsoil in section in the north section of k4. Probably assigned a feature during last season's excavation, but the data is not yet available. f 209 df ts ds topsoil as seen in section in the north section of k4. Probably assigned a feature during last season's excavation, but the data is not yet available. f 210 df a ds hard accumulation as seen in section in the north section of k4. Probably assigned a feature during last season's excavation, but the data is not yet available. f 212 df rh ds rodent holes as seen in section in the north section of k4. Probably assigned a feature during last season's excavation, but the data is not yet available. f 211 df w ds bricks as seen in section in the north section of k4. Probably assigned a feature during last season's excavation, but the data is not yet available. f 213 df fb ds pise rammed earth floor in the far E part of the N baulk of k4, extending into the far W part of the N baulk of k3. Begins at the E end of a large ashlar stone, f191. Has yielded a number of restorable vessels, a bronze object and several large grindstones.
