.bk A14 .fl O801jw1.j .fd daily journal for O801 and feature descriptions for f307-316 .ei jw .ed O801 .rd O801 .ri jw -sf jw was the sole staff member working on A14. dc was finishing A12, while jo was conducting pottery analysis. -ph gg and jw on site in the morning to photograph remaining loci and construct overall shots showing the numerous activity levels in different loci. gb reviewed the results and suggested one additional overall shot from a ladder looking to the NE toward the palace, whose walls will be re-covered this afternoon. -sn jw continued to review the section pencil drawings. In k13 and k4 there were poor correlations between the features assigned during excavation and the features observed in section, otherwise there was close agreement in the other loci. All features observed in the partial section of the north face of the north baulk shared by k1, k2, and k3 are newly assigned and should be useful in guiding future excavations of those loci in future seasons. (The portion extending to k1 contains several pits whose walls have either been excavated or have partially collapsed. Therefore this part of the section could not be drawn.) f 36 df a ds Surface accumulation appearing on final photographs of k13 at the end of the MZ16 season. No entry as to the characteristics in the record. We presume that it was excavated when the platforms and abi were first discovered, but the complete record of this work was not available on site. ns Our entering assumption is that this is the same as the topsoil, f176, assigned at the beginning of excavation for this season. f 152 df fi ds Feature in the NE quadrant of k13, described as a gray soil (ad) and a component of a walled structure (tannur), a11, extending into k3 and k12 in MZ16. In the east and north sections, it clearly appears as the fill of a large pit. jw speculates that what appeared as a tannur may have been the hardened outer edge of the pit, a situation similar to that seen when excavating the fill, f203, from a very large Phase 4 pit in the SW corner of k4. k 13 ns The north and east sections do not correlate with the soil features described during the excavation. A number of reasons could have contributed. During the excavation, there were four active loci and the time to supervise each by jw, the sole team member in the field for many days while gm was sick at home, was limited. In addition, the lead pickman and the only one highly skilled in the team had house responsibilities and was ill for part of the time. Third, the focus during the first portion of the excavation focused on the retrieval of a number of oblong clay objects, and some features were tied to this rather than to soil characteristics as observed in section. Evidence of two floors, f283 and f281, were encountered, and both can be seen in the north section. k 4 ns The east section does not show many of the soil features excavated. There is evidence of a cut and fill of a pit, a13 (also a5 in MZ16). The section gets full exposure to the afternoon sun and it may have dried to the extent that color differences, slight when the excavation was going on, have been washed out. It may have been possible to re-cut the section to get better definition, but we decided it was better to remove the baulk, since the soil features above living accumulation, f278, were well documented in the north section and by the considerable number of measurements made in the process of extracting the jars in the cache, a20. f 307 df a ds Reddish accumulation seen in the south half of the section of the east baulk of k22. It roughly corresponds to similar patches of red seen in the south baulks of k21, k23 and k24. This strongly suggests that there are ancient brick walls to the south. Abuts the pebble and sherd surface, f305, to the north. f 308 df a ds Brown accumulation under accumulation, f277, along the west side of the section of the north baulk of k22. Abuts pebble and sherd surface, f305, to the south. ns Dated as modern due to the presence of two deteriorated food cans at the same elevation as f305. We can presume that this modern accumlation was gully wash and that the action of the water probably cut away part of f205, whose visible sherds indicate was most likely laid down in Phase 3. f 309 df ly ds Layer of granular red material seen at the surface in the middle of the section of the east baulk of k13. Not recognized during excavation. It resembles the packing seen under floors in the outdoor palace brick floors in A15. f 310 df ly ds Mound of hard, gray soil which sits in accumulation, f267, and seen in section along the south side of the east baulk of k13. Not recognized during excavation. f 311 df ly ds Several bands of light gray soil which sit in accumulation, f274, and seen in section in the east baulk of k13. Not recognized during excavation. f 312 df ly ds Light gray accumulation on surface and seen in section in west side of the north baulk of k13. Not recognized during excavation of k13. f 313 df cut ds Cut of pit with fill, f152, seen in section of the north and east baulks of k13. Not recognized during excavation k13. f 314 df ly ds Reddish layer seen in section of the east baulk of k4. Not recognized during excavation. f 315 df fi ds Fill of a pit seen in the middle of the section of the east baulk of k4. Not recognized as f175 during the drawing of the section and given a separate feature number. f 316 df cut ds Cut of a pit seen in the middle of the section of the east baulk of k4. Not recognized as f184 during the drawing of the section and given a separate feature number. a 13 df pt ds pit seen in section of the east baulk of k4 and partially excavated in previous seasons and MZ17. Due to incomplete records at the site and an oversight in drawing of the section, this aggregate has also previously been designated pit, a5, and several feature numbers have been assigned to both the fill and the cut. a 22 df pt ds Cut and fill of a pit, a quarter of which is seen in the SW corner of k12. The components there were cut, f285, and fill, f284. In the east and the north sections of k13, adjacent to the SW, were found fill, 152 and cut, f313. These are components of the same large pit, portions of which may also be found in future excavations of k2. Based on incomplete knowledge, this set of features may also have been a part of aggregate a11, defined as a walled structure (tannur) in MZ16.
